This study was carried out to verify grinding performance of dental diamond bur and investigate the possibility of AE application in dentistry field. Workpieces were made of acryl and bovine respectively for the experiments in this study. Grinding test was conducted to get the data of grinding resistance and specific grinding energy of four different types of diamond bur by using tool dynamometer. AE signal was acquired to verify grinding process in the AE measuring system. Tool wear was observed to find parameters about grinding characteristics of diamond bur by means of SEM picture. It was found that the wear of dental diamond bur could be detected with polishing of grinding material, removal of adhesive parts, wear of particles neighboring cutting nose, loss of material and elevation of temperature. The wear of B, C, D type diamond bur is due to wear and fracture of grain size. Abnormal state can be found through the behavior of AE signal in the grinding working. As a result, it is expected that forecast of abnormal state is possible using AE equipments under real time process.

In this paper, the measured electrical resistance method is proposed to analyze the ramp-tab contact during the load/unload (L/UL) process. Since this method supplies the voltage change due to the resistance change, we can easily and conveniently identify the ramp-tab contact from the acoustic emission (AE) signal. At first, we carefully deposit the conductive material on the surface of the conventional ramp by sputtering method. The ratio frequency (RF) magnetron co-sputtering system is applied to accomplish the deposited double-layers on the ramp surface. One layer is the stainless steel for the conductive layer and the other is the titanium layer for the cohesive function between the ramp surface and the stainless steel layer. In order to guarantee the stiffness and damping properties of the original ramp, the deposited conductive layer is intended to have very thin thickness. After integration the proposed ramp device into the L/UL system and networking the electrical resistance circuit, the L/UL performance is experimentally evaluated by comparing the measured electrical resistance signal and AE signal.
High Performance Fiber-reinforced Cement Composite (HPFRCC) shows the multiple crack and damage tolerance capacity due to the interfacial bonding of the fibers to the cement matrix. For practical application, it is needed to investigate the fractural behavior of HPFRCC and understand the micro-mechanism of cement matrix with reinforcing fiber. This study is devoted to the investigation of the AE signals in HPFRCC under monotonic and cyclic uniaxial compressive loading, and total four series were tested. The major experimental parameters include the type and volume fraction of fiber (PE, PVA, SC), the hybrid type and loading pattern. The test results showed that the damage progress by compressive behavior of the HPFRCC is a characteristic for the hybrid fiber type and volume fraction. It is found from acoustic emission (AE) parameter value, that the second and third compressive load cycles resulted in successive decrease of the amplitude as compared with the first compressive load cycle. Also, the AE Kaiser effect existed in HPFRCC specimens up to 80% of its ultimate strength. These observations suggested that the AE Kaiser effect has good potential to be used as a new tool to monitor the loading history of HPFRCC.
Granite cores were sampled within Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and cyclic loadings up to 1550 cycles were applied. Microcrack development in samples due to cyclic loading was estimated using Acoustic Emission(AE) method. AE showed two different types depending on numbers of cycle. Type 1 appeared at low cycles and had low energy and diverse frequencies, while type 2 appeared at high cycles and had high energy and uniform frequency. AE property of type 1 indicates voids and pre-existing microcracks in samples may close or propagate up to certain length. Microcracks may be sheared or closed during loading and are recovered from shear or opened during unloading when AE of type 2 were measured. P wave velocities and Felicity ratios were measured at 50, 150, 350, 750, 1550 cycles. P wave velocities were almost the same regardless of number of cycles applied. However, Felicity ratios were much lower than 0.9, indicating that microcracks were developed within samples. This result indicates that Felicity ratio is a better tool than P wave velocity to estimate the damage of rock.

In this study, the flap fatigue test of a 48 m long wind turbine blade was performed for 1 million cycles to evaluate the characteristics of acoustic emission signals generated from fatigue damage of the wind blades. As the number of hits and total energy continued to increase during the first 0.6 million cycles, blade damage was constant. The rise-time result showed that the major aspects of damage were initiation and propagation of matrix cracks. In addition, the signal analysis of each channel showed that the most seriously damaged sections were the joint between the skin and spar, 20 m from the connection, and the spot of actual damage was observable by visual inspection. It turned out that the event source location was related to the change in each channel's total energy. It is expected that these findings will be useful for the optimal design of wind turbine blades.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture toughness of dental composite resins and to investigate the filler factor affecting the fracture behaviour on which the degree of fracture toughness depends. Six kinds of commercially available composite resin;, including two of each macrofilled, microfilled, and hybrid type were used for this study, The plane strain fracture toughness ($K_{10}$) was determined by three-point bending test using the single edge notch specimen according to the ASTM-E399. The specimens were fabricated with visible light curing or self curing of each composite resin previously inserted into a metal mold, and three-point bending test was conducted with cross-head speed of 0.1mm/min following a day's storage of the specimens in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water. The filler volume fractions were determined by the standard ashing test according to the ISO-4049. Acoustic Emission(AE), a nondestructive testing method detecting the elastic wave released from the localized sources In material under a certain stress, was detected during three-point bending test and its analyzed data was compared with, canning electron fractographs of each specimen. The results were as follows : 1. The filler content of composite resin material was found to be highest in the hybrid type followed by the macrofilled type, and the microfilled type. 2. It was found that the value of plane strain fracture toughness of composite resin material was in the range from 0.69 MPa$\sqrt{m}$ to 1 46 MPa$\sqrt{m}$ and highest In the macrofilled type followed by the hybrid type, and the microfilled type. 3. The consequence of Acoustic Emission analysis revealed that the plane strain fracture toughness increased according as the count of Acoustic Emission events increased. 4. The higher the plane strain fracture toughness became, the higher degree of surface roughness and irregularity the fractographs demonstrated.

Acoustic emission(AE) has emerged as a powerful nondestructive tool to detect or monitor preexisting defects and leaks in the vessel structures. A Bragg grating based acoustic emission sensor system is developed. Various type of fiber Bragg grating sensor including the variable length of sensing part was fabricated and prototype sensor system was tested by using PZT pulser and pencil lead break sources. Two types of sensor attachment were used. First, the fiber Bragg grating sensor was attached fully to the surface using bonding agent. Second one is that one part of fiber was attached to the surface partly by bonding and the other part of fiber will be act as a cantilever. That is, the resonant frequency of the fiber Bragg grating sensor will depend on the length of sensing part. The final goal of the sensor system is to provide on-line monitoring of cracks or leaks in reactor vessel head penetration of nuclear power plants.

In recent, the machining of difficult-to-cut materials such as titanium alloys, stainless steel, Inconel, ceramic, glass, and carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) used in aerospace, automobile, medical industry is actively researched. Abrasive waterjet is a non-traditional processing method in which ultra-high pressure water and abrasive particles are mixed in a mixing chamber and shoot out jet through a nozzle, and removed by erosion due to collision with a material. In particular, the nozzle of the abrasive waterjet is one of the most important parts that affect the machining quality as with a cutting tool in general machining. It is very important to monitor the condition of the nozzle because the workpiece is uncut or the surface quality deteriorates due to wear, expanding of the bore, damage of the nozzle and clogging of the abrasive, etc. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a monitoring system based on Acoustic Emission(AE) sensor that can detect nozzle condition in real time during AWJ processing.

Fourier transform has been one of the most common tools to study the frequency characteristics of signals. With the Fourier transform alone, it is difficult to tell whether signal's frequency contents evolve in time or not. Except for a few special cases, the frequency contents of most signals encountered in the real world change with time. Time-frequency methods are developed recently to overcome the drawbacks of Fourier transform, which can represent the information of signals in time and frequency at the same time. In this study, heat damage process of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) under monotonic tensile loading was characterized by acoustic emission. Different kinds of specimens were used to determine the characteristics of Strength and AE signals. Time-frequency analysis methods were employed for the analysis of fracture mechanism in CFRP such as matrix cracking, debonding and fiber fracture.
This study was aimed at development of fabrication process of functionally graded materials(FGM), consisting of metal and ceramic by thermal spraying method. NiCrAIY/$Al_2O_3$ FGM were made by using plasma spraying onto the SS400 carbon steel substrate. And mechanical properties such as microhardness, thermal shock resistance and adhesive strength of the coating layer were investigated. Adhesive strength was evaluated by acoustic emission method. It was resulted that NiCrAIY/$Al_2O_3$ FGM made by thermal spraying method showed excellent thermal shock resistance and adhesive strength compared to the other lamellar structures of sprayed coatings and that AE is useful tool to evaluate the defect of thermal sprayed coating layer.
