A Study on Cosmetic Acupuncture Through Anatomy and Physiology Interpretation (해부생리학 해석을 통한 미용침의 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism of Cosmetic Acupuncture through reinterpretation of anatomy and physiology. Methods : The causes of wrinkle increases and rapid aging of facial skin were studied and the theoretical system of Cosmetic Acupuncture treatment was analyzed through anatomy and physiology reinterpretation. Results and Conclusions : An increase in wrinkles and rapid aging of facial skin is caused by xerosis. Skin condition represents the condition of subcutaneous muscle. The reason why skin becomes easily dry is the heat produced by craniofacial part. Craniofacial part always generates lot of physiological fever because of the muscles. This physiological fever is produced from the muscles that are responsible for maintaining skull suture, controlling the movement of temporomandibular joint, maintaining head and neck posture. Controlling this fever is the crux of Cosmetic Acupuncture mechanism. These muscles correspond to Foot Taeyang meridian-muscle, Foot Soyang meridian-muscle and Foot Yangmyung meridian-muscle. Cosmetic Acupuncture is effective for preventing facial skin from aging and wrinkle increase by mechanical stimulus on facial muscles, and for controlling craniofacial part meridian-muscle system producing the heat.

Effects of Laser and Electro Acupuncture Treatment with GB30·GB34 on Change in Arthritis Rat (환도·양릉천 레이저 및 전침이 관절염에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : This study aimed to investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA), the laser acupuncture (LA) and the combination therapy (LA+EA) in a collagenase-induced osteoarthritis rat model. Methods : Osteoarthritis rat model was induced by injection of collagenase into left lower articular cavity (50 μl to knee and 10 μl to ankle). In order to assess the anti-osteoarthritic effects of EA, the 650 nm LA and 650 nm LA+EA, the histopathological findings and plantar withdrawal responses were analyzed. Results : All of the treatment methods used in this study were effective in reducing pain. All treatment groups were effective in decreasing inflammatory cytokines of TNF-a and IL-6; the 650 nm LA and 650 nm LA+EA groups significantly reduced IL-1β. Conclusions : 650 nm LA and EA inhibit the production of collagenase-induced inflammatory mediators of osteoarthritis.

An Analysis of Indications of Meridians in DongUiBoGam Using Data Mining (데이터마이닝을 이용한 동의보감에서 경락의 주치특성 분석)

  • Objectives : DongUiBoGam is one of the representative medical literatures in Korea. We used text mining methods and analyzed the characteristics of the indications of each meridian in the second chapter of DongUiBoGam, WaeHyeong, which addresses external body elements. We also visualized the relationships between the meridians and the disease sites. Methods : Using the term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) method, we quantified values regarding the indications of each meridian according to the frequency of the occurrences of 14 meridians and 14 disease sites. The spatial patterns of the indications of each meridian were visualized on a human body template according to the TF-IDF values. Using hierarchical clustering methods, twelve meridians were clustered into four groups based on the TF-IDF distributions of each meridian. Results : TF-IDF values of each meridian showed different constellation patterns at different disease sites. The spatial patterns of the indications of each meridian were similar to the route of the corresponding meridian. Conclusions : The present study identified spatial patterns between meridians and disease sites. These findings suggest that the constellations of the indications of meridians are primarily associated with the lines of the meridian system. We strongly believe that these findings will further the current understanding of indications of acupoints and meridians.

Effects of Acupotomy Treatment on Relapsed Lateral Malleolar Bursitis: A Case Report (재발성 족외과 점액낭염에 대한 도침요법: 증례 보고)

  • Objectives : This study details on a case of acupotomy for relapsed lateral malleolar bursitis. Methods : A 71-year-old woman with lateral malleolar bursitis was treated with acupotomy twice in an outpatient setting. A sterilized, disposable, blade width 0.5 mm × needle length 50 mm sized acupotomy was administered on GB40 and BL62 on each visit. Pain intensity assessment using Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and the response evaluation criteria was conducted right after each treatment. Results : Pain on NRS declined from 5 to less than 1 after twice of acupotomy treatment. This result was regarded as 'Complete Response' using the response evaluation criteria. There were no side effects during whole treatment procedure at all. Conclusions : It is turned out that acupotomy can have a positive clinical effect on lateral malleolar bursitis in this case without any adverse effect. Further controlled studies on acupotomy for lateral malleolar bursitis are required for clinical application.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Acupuncture Research Trends in Clinical Trials (침 치료 임상연구 동향에 대한 계량서지학적 분석)

  • Objectives : As acupuncture treatment has been widely practiced in many countries around the world, clinical trials of acupuncture treatments also have become popular. The objective of the study was to explore the trends of research investigating the effect of acupuncture treatment in clinical trials using a bibliometric approach, a quantitative analytical methods. Methods : Publications related to clinical trials using acupuncture from 2000 to 2019 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. Extracted articles were analyzed in terms of publication year, country, journal, research area, organizations and authors. Trends in research on acupuncture in clinical trials were visualized using the VOSviewer program. Results : A total of 3,166 articles of acupuncture clinical trials published from 2000 to 2019 were identified and analyzed. The country producing the most articles in this field was USA followed by China, England, South Korea, and Germany. A network analysis based on the co-occurrence of keywords showed following three clusters: clinical studies, pain management studies, and methodology studies. Conclusions : This study provided a macroscopic overview of research in acupuncture clinical trials. These findings provide an expansive strategy for researchers in this field to cooperate with other researchers or organizations.

A Literature Study of Korean Medicine for Sinusitis (비부비동염의 한의학적 문헌고찰)

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is to analyze the research of Korean medicine for the treatment of sinusitis. Methods : We searched domestic journals for this analysis with the title 'Sinusitis, Rhinosinusitis, Biyeon(鼻淵)'. We searched 'KISS, OASIS, Korean traditional knowledge portal'. Results : Total numbers of searched articles are 103. We selected 14 papers; 5 systematic reviews, 9 clinical trials. Systematic reviews deal with cause, treatment, herbal medicine and acu-points of sinusitis. Clinical trials deal with treatment cases of Korean medicine which are failed to treatment of western medicine which is antibiotics and surgery. Conclusions : Positive effect of Korean medicine on sinusitis is reported but cases are less and research cases are limited. We conclude that well-designed clinical studies are needed.

One Case of Diabetic Ophthalmoplegia Which Was Treated Acupuncture at Jok-Gwoleum-Gan-Gyeong (족궐음간경 자침을 이용한 당뇨병성 안근마비 1례)

  • Objectives : This study is to report one case of the diabetic ophthalmoplegia by acupuncture at Jok-Gwoleum-Gan-Gyeong. Methods : The patient was treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine for about 5 weeks. We evaluated the results of the treatment by observing the patient's symptoms. Results : After acupuncture the patient's symptoms such as strabismus, headache, ptosis, Rt eye pain and discomfort and both shoulder pain were considerably reduced. Conclusions : These results support that acupuncture at Jok-Gwoleum-Gan-Gyeong can have a meaningful effect in improving symptoms of diabetic ophthalmoplegia.

Effects of Acupoint Stimulation at the Pericadium and Liver Meridian on Heart Rate Variability (수족궐음경(手足厥陰經)의 경혈(經穴)이 심박변이도 SDNN에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : This study is to investigate stimulation effects of acupoints at differential meridian along arm and leg on the physiological phenomenon of heartbeats. Methods : 8 subjects were participated in this study. The experiments were performed in Resting session(Rs), Insertion session(Is), Stimulation session1(Ss1), Stimulation session2(Ss2), Stimulation session3(Ss3) sequence. Time of each session and the interval between each session was 30 seconds all. Acupuncture was performed manually on PC3 or LR8 at random with a two-day interval. stand deviation of N-N interval(SDNN) was measured for each session. Results : At PC3, SDNN increased in Ss1, Ss2, and Ss3 compared to Rs but at LR8, there was little change between Ss1, Ss2, Ss3 and Rs. Post-hoc analysis revealed that mean value of SDNN significantly increased in Ss1 compared with Baseline at PC3, while there was little change at LR8. When LR8 and PC3 were compared at each time point, there was a significant difference only in Ss1. Conclusions : Our results indicate that there is a correlation between specific physiological functions and acupoints.

A Historical Study of the Acupoints for Using Acupuncture and Moxibustion on Wheezing and Dyspnea (효천증 침구치료 혈위 및 치법에 관한 고찰)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate acupoints that appear in ancient records and use with regard to treatment to the wheezing and dyspnea. Methods : We investigated 10 ancient records from Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty that had medical references to wheezing and dyspnea. Results and Conclusions : Out of acupoints that found out to be used for treatment of wheezing and dyspnea in this study, Conception and Governor channels account for 38.9%, the three yang meridians of the foot account for 22.2% and the three tin meridians of the Hand account for 13.9%. In 10 ancient records, CV22(Tian tu) appears 5 times, CV12(Zhongwan) and ST36(Zusanli) appear 4times. A total number of acupoints that appear in the ancient records were 35. In compendium of medicine, the number of acupoints was 21. In cmpendium of acupuncture and moxibustion, the number of acupoints was 10. In the treatment of wheezing and dyspnea, not only acupuncture but also moxibustion has a great importance.

Neuroanatomical Comparative Studies on the Motor and Sensory Neurons Associated with Cheonji(PC1) in the Rats (흰쥐에서 천지(PC1)와 관련된 운동신경과 감각신경의 분포영역에 대한 신경해부학적 연구)

  • This study was performed to comparative investigate the distribution of primary sensory and motor neurons associated with Cheonji(PC1) acupoint by using neural tracing technique. A total 4 SD rats were used in the present study. After anesthesia, the rats received microinjection of $6{\mu}l$ of cholera toxin B subunit(CTB) into the corresponding sites of the acupoints Cheonji(PC1) in the human body for observing the distribution of the related primary sensory neurons in dorsal root ganglia(DRGs) and motor neurons in the spinal cord(C3~T4) and sympathetic ganglia. Three days after the microinjection, the rats were anesthetized and transcardially perfused saline and 4% paraformaldehyde, followed by routine section of the DRGs, sympathetic chain ganglia(SCGs) and spinal cord. Labeled neurons and nerve fibers were detected by immunohistochemical method and observed by light microscope equipped with a digital camera. The labeled neurons were recorded and counted. From this research, the distribution of primary sensory and motor neurons associated with Cheonji(PC1) acupoints were concluded as follows. Muscle meridian related Cheonji(PC1) are controlled by spinal segments of C5~T1, C6~T4, respectively.
