  • This study concerns the prediction of shear capacity, as governed by concrete breakout failure of the anchors under load applied angle and an group anchors at an edge and installed in uncracked, unreinforced concrete. For this purpose, the methods to evaluate the shear capacity of the anchors in concrete are summarized and the experimental data are compared with capacities by the two present methods: the method of ACI 349-90 and concrete capacity design (CCD) method.

  • This research program is directed at studying the behavior and the strength of reinforced concrete slabs sub¬jected to certain combination of punching shear and in-plane tension. Major variables to be investigated are the shear span to depth ratio of reinforced concrete slabs and the degree of the in-plane tensile force which is act¬ing tangent to the slabs. The experimental results are used for understanding of the degree of tbe interaction between the two loadings, and for developing a new practical design equation.

  • This paper presents the evaluation of behavior and the prediction of tensile capacity of anchors that fail concrete, as the design basis for anchorage. Tests of cast-in-place headed anchors, domestically manufactured and installed in uncracked, unreinforced concrete are performed to investigate the behavior of single anchors and multiple anchors with the consideration of various embedment lengths and edge distances. The failure mode and the load-deformation response of these anchors are discussed and the concrete failure dta are then compared with capacity predictions by the two existing methods : the 45 degree cone method of ACI 349, 318 and the concrete capacity design (CCD) method. Discrepancies between the test results and these two prediction methods, FEM analysis are assessed.

  • Because of the congestion problems, the high-strength reinforcements are expected to be used in nuclear power plant structures in the near future. According to ACI 349-13, it is permitted to use the high-strength(550MPa) hooked bars in design of development length, but there is no special equation for high-strength bars. In order to reflect the anchorage capacity and behavior properties of high-strength bars with large-diameter(43 & 57mm), it is necessary to develope the new development length equation for large-size and high-strength bars.

  • Because of the congestion problems, the high-strength reinforcements are expected to be used in nuclear power plant structures in the near future. According to ACI 349-13, lap splices of high-strength(550MPa) bars can be used but it is expected that lap splice length of reinforcement will be increased significantly. The increased lap splice length will be lead to increase in construction cost & period and to problems of other bar congestions. Therefore, this study will analyze the economic feasibility on mechanical splice of high-strength reinforcement used nuclear power plant structures instead of lap splice.

  • Generally significant reinforcement is used in nuclear power plant structures and may cause potential problems when concrete is poured. In particular pouring concrete into structural member joint area is more difficult than other areas since the joint area is very congested due to the crossed bars and the embedded plates, The purpose of this study is to solve these problems by applying Gr.80(550MPa) shear bars to containment structures of nuclear power plant. In order to apply them to containment structures, it is necessary to change ASME-CC code (ASME Sec.III Div.2). The structural performance tests of wall & beam have been done to compare Gr.80(550Mpa) with Gr.60(420MPa) shear bars. The test results and code change proposal were presented to ASME-CC Committee last year and the discussion for code change will be expected to proceed in the near future.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the workability and various mechanical properties of heavyweight magnetite concrete and examine the reliability of the design equations specified in code provisions. The main parameters investigated were the water-to-cement ratio and substitution level of normal-weight coarse aggregate (granite) for magnetite. The oven-dried unit weight of concrete tested ranged between 2446 and $3426kg/m^3$. The measured mechanical properties included compressive strength development, stress-strain curve, splitting tensile strength, moduli of elasticity and rupture, and bond stress-slip relationship of concrete. Test results revealed that the initial slump of heavyweight magnetite concrete increased as the substitution level of normal-weight coarse aggregate increases. The substitution level of normal-weight coarse aggregate had little influence on the compressive strength and tensile resistance capacity of heavyweight concrete, while it significantly affected the modulus of elasticity and stress-strain curves of such concrete. The design equations of ACI 349-06 and CEB-FIP provisions mostly conservatively predicted the mechanical properties of heavyweight magnetite concrete, but the empirical equations for modulus of elasticity and splitting tensile strength need to be modified considering the unit weight of concrete.

  • In this study, to evaluate the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced cement composites by strain rate, hydraulic rapid loading test system was developed. And compressive and tensile strength of the hooked steel fiber and polyamide fiber reinforced cement composite were evaluated. As a result, the compressive strength, strain capacity and elastic modulus were increased with increasing strain rate. The effect of compressive strength by type and volume fraction of fibers was not significant. The dynamic increase factor(DIF) of the compressive strength was higher than that of the CEB-FIP model code 2010 and showed a trend similar to that of ACI-349. The tensile strength and strain capacity were increased with increasing strain rate. The hooked steel fibers were drawn from the matrix. The tensile strength and strain capacity of hooked steel fiber reinforced cement composites were increased as the strain rate increased. The tensile strength and deformation capacity of the fiber reinforced cement composites were increased. And, hooked steel fibers were drawn from the matrix. On the other hand, because the bonding properties of polyamide fiber and matrix is large, polyamide fiber was cut-off with out pullout from matrix. The strain rate effect on the tensile properties of polyamide fiber reinforced cement composites was found to be strongly affected by the tensile strength of the fibers.
