Spiral reinforcement in a circular column plays an effective role in the ductile behavior of a column through position fixing and buckling restraining of the longitudinal reinforcement, and confining core-concrete. Each country has suggested the minimum volumetric ratio of spiral reinforcement in order to secure the ductility of concrete columns. The minimum volumetric ratio of spiral reinforcement suggested by ACI 318-14 and the national concrete structure design standard was developed based on the theory of Richard et al. (1928); furthermore it has been used until now. However, their theory cannot consider the effects of high strength concrete and high strength reinforcement, and arrangement condition of the spiral reinforcement. In this study, a modified minimum volumetric ratio equation is suggested, which is required to improve the ductility of reinforced concrete circular columns and to recover their stress. The modified minimum volumetric ratio equation suggested here considers the effect of the compressive strength of concrete, the yield strength of spiral reinforcement, the cross sectional area of columns, the pitch of spiral reinforcements and the diameter of spiral reinforcement. In this paper, the validity of the minimum volumetric ratios from ACI 318-14 and this study was investigated and compared based on the results of uniaxial compression experiment for specimens in which the material strength and the spiral reinforcements ratio were used as variables. In the end of the study, the modification method for the suggested equation was examined.
There are many problems in application of FRP reinforcing bars as shear reinforcement, since bending of FRP bars is not a feasible process on construction site. Even though FRP bars can be manufactured in bent shape, they have lower strength at bent location. However, there are no serious problems to use FRP bars as flexural reinforcement. Plates or slabs like bridge decks, in general, do not need shear reinforcements. These types of members with FRP flexural reinforcement have lower shear strength than those with conventional steel flexural reinforcement. However, reliable process or equation for shear strength estimation of FRP reinforced concrete without shear reinforcement are not established, yet. In this study, predicted shear strength obtained from available design equations and assessment equations are compared with 211 experimental results. The results showed that among the current design codes, the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (ISE) provided the best estimation. ACI 440.1R-06 provided conservative results with degree of dispersion similar to that of ISE. In addition, regression analysis on the collected experimental results was conducted to develop regression models. As a result, a new reliable shear strength equation was proposed.

Push-out tests were performed to evaluate the shear capacity of a composite steel truss deck slab system, called an automatic prefabrication bar-mesh system, using lightweight concrete. The six specimens were classified into three groups: DP, NDP, and Solid, according to the variations between the bar mesh and the zinc plate automatic prefabrications. This paper focused on the failure behaviors, load-displacement characteristics, and a performance comparison based on design codes.

This paper presents research result to study the change of structural capacity of reinforced concrete beams with various shear reinforcement ratios after damage by fire load. In addition, fundamental data are given in order to predict the strength variation of RC member due to fire damage by evaluating the previous calculation method codified in codes. Nine RC beam specimens were made and exposed to the fire controled by the standard fire curve. And the structural capacity was evaluated through a failure test under simple support condition. Previous code formula, ACI code and Eurocode were reviewed and used for the calculation of the strength of specimens damaged by fire. From the test, RC beam specimens exhibited very brittle failure when it exposed to fire controled by standard fire curve during more than one hour. And this failure pattern tended to be more serious when shear reinforcement ratio decreased or fire loading duration increased. From the evaluation of the calculation process in code, the change of strength due to fire can be properly predicted if the damage of materials is well defined.
In this study, ultimate strengths of 51 continuous reinforced concrete deep beams were evaluated by the ACI 318M-08's strut-tie model approach implemented with the presented indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio of the companion paper. The ultimate strengths of the continuous deep beams were also estimated by the shear equations derived based on experimental results, conventional design codes based on experimental and theoretical shear strength models, and current strut-tie model design codes. The validity of the presented strut-tie model and load distribution ratio was examined through the comparison of the strength analysis results classified according to the primary design variables of shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and concrete compressive strength. The present study results of ultimate strengths obtained using the indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio of the continuous deep beams agree fairly well with those obtained using other approaches. In addition, the present approach reflected the effect of the primary design variables on the ultimate strengths of the continuous deep beams consistently and accurately. Therefore, the present study will help structural designers to conduct rational and practical strut-tie model designs of continuous deep beams.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the structural performance of mortar-filled ductile cast iron sleeve splice developed for SD500 high-strength reinforcing bar under cyclic loading. The test variables adopted in this study are the development length of bar, compressive strength of mortar, bar size, sleeve types and others. In this research, it is showed that the mortar-filled sleeve splice for SD500 high-strength bar satisfied the structural performance required in ACI, AIJ code as well as domestic code. Also the results of experimental research presented in this paper provided basic engineering data for developing a reasonable design method of mortar-filled sleeve splice for SD500 high-strength reinforcing bar.
This paper presents the prediction of the actual strength of shear reinforcement on the basis of the concept of effective stirrups. The prediction method incorporating the shear cracking angle was proposed with the estimation by the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT). To check the validity of the method, discussion of the current ACI 318-05 and comparison of 39 test results from the literature including author's retrospective test data were made. The influencing factors of compressive concrete strength and type of shear-reinforcement were also investigated. Furthermore, two full-scale beam specimens shear-reinforced with headed bars were tested to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method.

In this paper, an experimental evaluation of shear strength of wide beam is presented. By the experiment in paper, shear strength depending on parameter of shear reinforcement by GFRP plate on wide beam is investigated. Specimens are 7 of reinforced by GFRP plate with openings. The shear reinforcement is manufactured into plate shape with openings to ensure perfect integration with concrete. The test was performed on 7 specimens. The parameters are including number of shear reinforcement by GFRP plates and center-to-center spacing between vertical strip. We analysed the crack, failure mode, strain, shear strength of specimens. A calculation of the shear strength of reinforced wide beam with GFRP plate based on ACI 318-11. The result of the experiment shows that the GFRP plate is works successfully as shear reinforcement in the wide beam.

Recently, nine $1397{\times}1397{\times}178mm$ RC panels were tested under in-plane pure-shear monotonic loading condition using the Panel Element Tester by Hsu (1997, ACI). By combining the equilibrium, compatibility, and the softened stress-strain relationship of concrete in biaxial state, Modern Truss Model (MCFT, RA-STM) are capable of producing the nonlinear analysis of RC membrane panel through the complicated trial-and-error method with double loop. In this paper, an efficient algorithm with one loop is proposed for the refined Mohr compatibility Method based on the strut-tie failure criteria. This algorithm can be speedy calculated to analyze the shear history of RC membrane element using the results of Hsu test. The results indicate that the response of shear deformation energy at Big Bang of shear strain significantly influenced by the principal compressive stress-strain (crushing failure).

Five concrete-encased steel columns using high-strength steel($f_{ys}$=801MPa) and high-strength concrete($f_{ck}$=97.7MPa) were tested to investigate the eccentric axial load-displacement relationship. Test parameters included the type, yield strength, and spacing of lateral reinforcement, and also the eccentricity of axial load. To analyze the behavior of the column specimens, the nonlinear sectional analysis using strain-compatibility and confinement effect was performed. To examine the applicability of existing design codes for the composite sections using high-strength materials, the test results were also compared with the predictions by the nonlinear analysis and the design codes. The confinement effect of lateral reinforcement increased the ductility of concrete, and the moment capacity of the column specimens increased with the ductility of concrete. The prediction by the nonlinear analysis gave good agreement with the test results. On the other hand, the ACI 318 neglecting lateral confinement effect underestimated the strength of the column specimens, and the Eurocode 4 using complete plastic capacity of steel section overestimated.
