  • Objectives: The study was designed to evaluate anti-arthritic activity of Ajmodadi Churna (AC) and its effect on Complete freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis in Wistar rats. Methods: Arthritis was induced by injecting 0.2 mL CFA into sub plantar surface of left hind paw. Test sample AC-1 and AC-2, 200 and 400 mg/kg, respectively was given to the animals for 21 consecutive days. The increase in swelling was observed after induction of arthritis. The paw edema was measured on 0, 3, 7, 14 and 21 day using Vernier caliper after the induction of arthritis. The collected blood samples further used for the estimation of red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), erythrocytes sedimentation rate (ESR), and hemoglobin (Hb), using hematology analyzer. Serum concentration of IL-6 and TNF-α were also measured using rat ELISA kits. Results: Results showed that a significant reduction in paw edema was observed in AC-2 treated rats. The paw edema was restored on day 21 was 4.48 mm for AC-2, which is near to the control group. The arthritis score in treated rats was found to be considerably lower than in the control group i.e. 0.83 for AC-2 and 1.50 for AC-1. A decrease in levels of RBC and hemoglobin were observed in arthritic rats. Inflammation was significantly reduced and serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were lowered after treatment with the test drug. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the study that AC possess significant anti-arthritic activity. Furthermore, this condition was linked to a reduction in abnormal humoral immune responses.

  • Objective : The study investigates the extent of brain shift and its effect on the accuracy of the stereotaxic procedure. Methods : Thirty-five patients underwent 40stereotactic procedures between June 2002 and March 2004. There were 26 males, mean age 59years old. There were 34procedures for Parkinson's disease, 2 for essential tremor, 3 for cerebral palsy, 1 for dystonia. Patients were divided in four groups based on postoperative pneumocephalus : under 5cc [9 procedures], between $5{\sim}10cc$ [13procedures], between $10{\sim}15cc$ [11 procedures] and more than 15cc [7procedures]. The coordinates of the anterior commissure[AC], posterior commissure[PC], and target were defined in pre-and intraoperative magnetic resonance image scans and the amount of air volume was measured with @Target (BrainLab, Heimstetten, Germany]. Results : The mean AC-PC was 26.5mm for patients with less than 5cc, 26.9mm for $5{\sim}10cc$, 25.8mm for $10{\sim}15cc$ and 26.2mm for more than 15cc. The length of AC-PC line and coordinates of AC, PC was also not statistically different, Euclidean distance as well as ${\Delta}x$, ${\Delta}y$, ${\Delta}z$ of AC, PC, and target were also not statistically different among the groups [p>,1]. There was a variance in target of $0.7{\sim}7.6mm$, Euclidean distance of 2.5mm, related to electrophysiology but not to brain-shift. Conclusion : The amount of air accumulated in the intracranial space and compressing the cortical surface has no effect on the localization of subcortical stereotactic target and landmarks.

  • This study investigated the utilization of activated calcium (AC) as preservatives for wet noodle manufacturing. The quality characteristics and shelf-life of wet noodle made with sterilized distilled water, 5% alcohol, 0.1% AC plus 5% alcohol, 0.2% AC plus 5% alcohol, and 0.2% AC were evaluated. The total microbial count and pH value of wet noodle were determined during storage at $10^{\circ}C$. During storage at $10^{\circ}C$ for 42 days, pH of wet noodles was slightly decreased with increased storage periods. The pH values of wet noodles made with AC were higher than the others. Instrument textural characteristics (hardness, adhesiveness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewingness) were measured and were not significantly changed during storage period. The total microbial counts in wet noodles increased with extended storage duration. With AC, microbial growth rate were decreased compared to the control for whole storage period. In sensory evaluation, a little difference was shown between control and AC or alcohol containing wet noodles and no significant differences during the storage period. It was concluded that shelf-life of wet noodles was extended two-fold or more by adding AC for storage at $10^{\circ}C$.

  • The rate of hydrolysis of insecticidal $O,O-diethyl-{\alpha}-cyanobenzylideneamino-oxyphosphorothioate\;(Volaton^{\circledR})$ has been studied in 25% (v/v) aqueous dioxane. On the basis of solvent effect (pH 6.0; m=0.21, n=1.55, pH 12.0; m=0.42, n=3.14 & $|m|{\ll}|l|$), general base catalysis, hydrolysis product analysis, calculation of molecular orbital (MO) and rate equation, it may be concluded that the hydrolysis of Volaton proceeds through the $A_{AC}2$ mechanism via trigonal bipyramidal $(sp^3d^2)$ intermediate below pH 7.0, while above pH 9.0 the hydrolysis proceeds through the $B_{AC}2$ mechanism. Hydrolysis reactivity of Volaton depends on positive charge strength $(p{\gg}{\alpha}C_2)$ rather than steric hindrance. In the range between pH 7.0 and pH 9.0, these two reactions occur competitively.

  • The glass series modified by tungsten oxide was created using the compounds (75-x) B2O3- 10SrCO3- 8TeO2- 7ZnO - xWO3, where x = 0, 1, 5, 10, 22, 27, 34, and 40% mole percentage. A UV-visible spectrophotometer and thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) methods were employed to characterize the specimen's optical and phase transition attributes, respectively. The mass-attenuation coefficient (AC) of all created glasses from BSTZW0 to BSTZ7 was estimated using Geant4 code from 0.05 to 3 MeV and compared to the XCOM software results, with a relative difference of less than 2% between the two results. The increase of WO3 percentage lead to an increase in the Linear-AC at each studied energy, and this is mainly due to the fact that the higher the percentage of WO3 in the glass increases its density which causes an increase in the Linear-AC, so an energy of 0.06 MeV, as an example, the values of the Linear-AC was 4.009, 4.509, 5.442, 6812, 8.564, 9.856, 10.999 and 11.628 cm-1 form BSTZW0 too BSTZW7, respectively. The Half-VL (value layer), Mean-FP (free path), Tenth-VL, and Radiation attenuation performance (RAP) were also calculated for the current BSTZW-glass samples and revealed that BSTZW7 had the best gamma ray attenuation performance at all discussed energies when compared to other studied glass samples.

  • The effects of Monascus-fermented Korean red ginseng (MFRG) on the contents of serum lipids and tissues lipid peroxidation was investigated in alcohol feeding rats (AC group). Serum contents of total lipid and free fatty acid in alcohol feeding rats were significantly increased, but these increases tended to decrease in the AMFRG group. Serum triglyceride content was also significantly decreased in the AMFRG group compared to other groups. Serum content of total-cholesterol was significantly increased in AC group compared to normal control (NC) group, whereas there was no significant difference between the AC and AMFRG groups. Content of HDL-cholesterol in serum was slightly increased in the AC group compared to the NC group, but this increase in the AC group was more significantly increased in the AMFRG group. At the same time, atherogenic index (AI) was also significantly decreased in the AMFRG group compared to the AC group. Contents of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in the liver, heart, spleen and testes were significantly increased in the AC group compared to the NC group, but these increases were significantly less in the AMFRG group. Contents of liver nonheme ion was increased in the AC group and was significantly decreased in the AMFRG group, which suggested that lipid peroxidation contents are inversely correlated with liver nonheme ion content. Hepatic glutathione concentration was significantly decreased in the AC group, but this content was significantly increased in the AMFRG group and it showed the antioxidant abilities of glutathione. These results suggested that Monascus-fermented Korea red ginseng has anti-atherogenic index (AI) effects as well as antioxidative activities through reduced tissue oxidative stress in alcohol feeding rats.

  • This paper is studied on boost AC-DC converter of high power factor and high efficiency for discontinuous current control. The converter operated in discontinuous current control eliminates the complicated circuit control requirement, and reduces a number of components. The input current waveform in proposed circuit is got to be a discontinuous sinusoidal form in proportion to magnitude of ac input voltage under the constant duty cycle switching. Therefore, the input power factor is nearly unity and the control circuit is simple. Also the switching devices in a proposed circuit are operated with soft switching by the partial resonant method. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of system is high. The partial resonant circuit makes use of a inductor using step up and loss-less snubber capacitor. The circuit topology of the converter is simplified. Some simulative results on computer and experimental results are included to confirm the validity of the analytical results.

  • Efficiently removing Al(III) from rare earth is very significant because even trace amount of Al(III) can cause serious harm to the rare earth materials. In this paper, a nitrogen-containing activated carbon, AC-P700, was synthesized using peas as raw materials. The AC-P700 was characterized by surface area analyzer, FT-IR, and XPS methods. The adsorption and recognition properties of AC-P700 towards Al(III) were investigated, and the recognition mechanism was also analyzed. The BET special surface area of AC-P700 was $1277.1m^2{\cdot}g^{-1}$, and the average pore diameter was 1.90 nm. The AC-P700 possesses strong adsorption affinity and excellent recognition selectivity towards Al(III). The adsorption capacity for Al(III) could reach to $0.53mmol{\cdot}g^{-1}$, and relative selectivity coefficients relative to La(III) and Ce(III) is 9.6 and 8.7, respectively. Besides, AC-P700 possesses better regeneration ability and reusability.
