High-efficiency fuel-cell power inverter with soft-switching resonant technique (Soft-switching resonant technique을 적용한 고효율 PEMFC inverter)

  • In order to reduce the capital and overall operating cost of a fuel-cell system, a high-efficiency fuel-cell power inverter with a simple framework is required. The high-order two-inductance two-capacitance (LLCC) resonant technique is adopted in this study to implement a low-frequency 60-Hz sine wave voltage inverter utilized in the proton exchange membrane fuel-cell (PEMFC) system. The methodology for inverting dc voltage into low-frequency ac boltage is usually generated by the pulse-width-modulation (PWM) technique. However, the PWM-type inverter output has high-frequency harmonic components. Although an adequately designed filter could be utilized to overcome this problem, there are still some undesirable effects introduced by the high-frequency switching loss, electromagnetic-interference, harmonic current, and load variation. A novel power inverter via the LLCC resonant technique is designed for inverting dc voltage into 60-Hz ac sine wave voltage in the PEMFC system. This circuit scheme has the merits of low harmonic components, soft switching, high efficiency, and simplified implementation. The effectiveness of the proposed resonant inverter used for the PEMFC system is verified by numerical simulations and experimental results.

  • Alternative marine power (AMP) is continuously used in ports and on docks because of regulations on global ship emission reduction. In Korea, the use of AMP is also mandatory under the Special Act on Port Air Quality Improvement, and efforts are under way in connection with various eco-friendly ships, such as electric-propulsion ships. In this study, AC load flow analysis was performed by modeling the situation in which onboard power is supplied through AMP. This analysis made it possible to study the electrical parameters and losses when power was supplied to the ship. In addition, through a transient stability analysis, the high-speed generation transfer limit value for uninterruptible conversion through onboard generators in the event of a system accident was derived.   • In this paper, a constant frequency phase shifting PWM-controlled voltage source full bridge-type series load resonant high-frequency inverter using the $4^{th}$ generation IGBT power modules is presented for innovative consumer electromagnetic induction heating applications, such as a hot water producer, steamer and super heated steamer. The bridge arm side link passive capacitive snubbers in parallel with each power semiconductor device and AC load side linked active edge inductive snubber-assisted series load resonant tank soft switching inverter with a constant frequency phase shifted PWM control scheme is evaluated and discussed on the basis of the simulation and experimental results. It is proved from a practical point of view that the series load resonant and edge resonant hybrid high-frequency inverter topology, what is called, DE class type, including the variable-power variable-frequency regulation function can expand zero voltage soft switching commutation area even under low output power setting ranges, which is more suitable and acceptable for newly developed induction heated dual pack fluid heaters. Furthermore, even the lower output power regulation mode of this high-frequency load resonant tank inverter circuit is verified so that this inverter can achieve ZVS with the aid of the single auxiliary inductor snubber.

Harmonics Assessment for an Electric Railroad Feeding System using Moments Matching Method (모멘트 정합 방법(Moment Matching Method)을 이용한 전기철도 급전시스템의 고조파 평가)

  • Generally, an electric railroad feeding system has many problems due to the different characteristics in contrast with a load of general three-phase AC electric power system. One of them is harmonics problem caused by the switching device existing in the feeding system, and moreover, the time-varying dynamic loads of rail way is inherently another cause to increase this harmonics problem. In Korea power systems, the electric railroad feeding system is directly supplied from the substation of KEPCO. Therefore, if voltages fluctuation or unbalanced voltages are created by the voltage and current distortion or voltage drop during operation, it affects directly the source of supply. The trainloads of electric railway system have non-periodic but iterative harmonic characteristics as operating condition, because the electric characteristic of the electric railroad feeding system is changed by physical conditions of the each trainload. According to the traditional study, the estimation of harmonics has been performed by deterministic way using the steady state data at the specific time. This method is easy to analyze harmonics, but it has limits in some cases which needs an assessment of dynamic load and reliability. Therefore, this paper proposes the probabilistic estimation method, moments matching method(MW) in order to overcome the drawback of deterministic method. In this paper, distributions for each harmonics are convolved to obtain the moments and cumulants of TDD(Total Demand Distortion), and this can be generalized for any number of trains. For the case study, the electric railway system of LAT(Intra Airport Transit) in Incheon International Airport is modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC dynamic simulator. The raw data of harmonics for the moments matching method is acquired from simulation of the LAT model.

  • In this paper, fuel cell power generation system that is being studied in recent railway field was applied to compensate for the voltage drop due to the load as driving electric vehicle. PSIM simulation program is to be used to implement the modeling of the electric railway for AC AT feeder system. For it, It was applied to the product-type single-phase PLL algorithm, step-down converter is controlled as power so as to have the fuelcell generation system. Based on it's result, a reactive power due to the catenary impedance in accordance with the current flowing is compensated as linked with fuelcell generation system which supplied the current to the power supply grid. and then its performance was confirmed that voltage compensation effect obtained at SubStation (SS), SubSectioning Post (SSP), Sectioning Post (SP).

  • For the economical and reasonable operation of electric power system according to continual increase of electric power demand and decrease of load factor, the potential application of superconducting magnertic energy storage [SMES] with high efficiency and fast response in the electric utility is receiving attractive attension. In the light of this background, to confirm the basic principle of SMES, theoretical study, design technique and fabrication procedure for superconducting coil, current lead, cryostat, measuring and protection system of SMES are described in detail. Especially, a new design technique for superconducting coil and current lead is porposed and it was proved experimentally by the performance test of SMES which is developed for the first time in our country. At the peak operating current 200A, the maximum magnetic field amd stored energy of the coil are 3.52T and 2500J, espectively. The thermal and mechanical stability of 2500J SMES is also confirmed experimetally by its characteristics test, AC loss, protection system, charge and discharge test. The experimetal results show good characteristics of energy storage system.

  • The HTS power cable system of 3-phase 100-m class has been tested at the KEPCO's Gochang power testing center in Korea during 8,000 hours or more for investigating long-term operating performance. The system is rated 22.9kV, 1250A and is cooled with sub cooled liquid nitrogen. Several cooling performance tests such as cooling capacity, heat load, AC loss, temperature stability and thermal cycle were performed at operating temperature of 66.4K and several different temperatures.

  • In order to apply a piezoelectric energy harvester to a smart sensor system, an energy harvest interface circuit including an AC-DC rectifier is required. In this paper, we compared the performance of full bridge rectifier, which is a typical energy harvester interface circuit, and synchronous piezoelectric energy harvest interface circuit by using board-level simulation. As a result, the output power of a synchronous electric charge extraction(: SECE) circuit is about four times larger than that of the full bridge rectifier, and there is little load variation. And a high voltage comparator, which is essential for the SECE circuit for the piezoelectric energy harvester with an output voltage of 40V or more, was designed using 0.35 um BCD process. The SECE circuit using the designed high-voltage comparator proved that the output power is 427 % higher than the FBR circuit.

  • Mechanical Properties, such as tensile strength, elongation, and tear strength, decreased according to increasing the load of ATH, volume resistivity, AC break down strength, and tracking resistance for HVI SC contained ATH treated by vinyl Silane were better than those for HVI SC were contained ATH treated by other surface treatment agent, such as stearic acid and acryl silane.

  • The AC electrified railway systems have the power quality problems such as the harmonic distortion, the reactive power and the three-phase imbalance because of the electrical load characteristics of locomotives, which are non-linear single-phase. These power quality problems have a bad effect on not only AC electrified railway systems but also other electric systems connected together. The RPQC (railway power quality conditioner) can compensate such power quality problems in the AC electrified railway systems. In this paper, a novel RPQC control method based on SRF (synchronous-reference-frame) control is proposed. The proposed RPQC control method can compensate effectively the harmonic currents, the reactive power and the load imbalance. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed RPQC control method are illustrated through the simulations.
