  • PURPOSES : This study focuses on the evaluation of interface performance with varying surface texture and tack coat application in an asphalt overlay. METHODS : The evaluation is carried out in two phases: tracking test and interface bond strength test. Using an image processing tool, tracking test is conducted to evaluate the susceptibility of the tack coat material to produce excessive tracking during application. Using the pull-off test method, the bond strength test is performed to determine the ability of the interface layer to resist failure. RESULTS : Results show that the underseal application yields less tracking compared to other applications. However, the bond strength is barely within the minimum acceptable value. On the other hand, RSC-4 produces higher bond strength for all surface types, but the drying time is long, which produces excessive tracking. CONCLUSIONS : While underseal application may be suitable for a trackless condition, the bond strength is less appealing compared to the rest of the tack applications available. RSC-4 demonstrated a high and consistent bond strength performance, but more time is required for drying to avoid excessive tracking. Tack coat application and surface type combination produce varying results. Therefore, these should be considered when selecting suitable future tack coat application options.

  • The Velocity Autocorrelation Function (VAF) of the sodium ions is calculated for a range of temperature from 250K to 1000K and converted into the linear ac-conductivity and ac-susceptibility response via Fourier transformation. A peak is found in the conductivity around $6\times10^{12}$ Hz that has some of the character of a Poley absorption. Here it is shown to be due to an harmonically coupled site vibrations of the sodium atoms, which extend only over a limited range. At frequencies below the peak the conductivity tends towards a constant i.e. dc value corresponding to a constant flow of ions through the simulation cell. At high temperatures the conductivity due to this ion transport process behaves like a metal with an insulator to metal transition occurring around a specific temperature.

  • Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations have been used to model the dynamics of the charge-compensating sodium ions in the non-stoichiometric hollandite Nax$(Ti_{8-x}Cr_x)O_{16}$. These interstitial ions reside in 'tunnels' in the crystal structure and move under the forces of both the ions making up the cage structure and the many body interactions of the other sodium ions in the tunnel. The Velocity Autocorrelation Function (VAF) of the sodium ions is calculated for a range of temperature from 250K to 1000K and converted into the linear ac-conductivity and ac-susceptibility response via Fourier transformation. • Background: It has been hypothesized that IL-18 (pro-) and IL-10 (anti-) inflammatory genetic variants at -607 C/A-137G/C and -819C/T,-592C/A, respectively, may generate susceptibility and severity risk with various modes of tobacco exposure in prostate carcinoma (PCa) patients. IL-18 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine expressed on various cells including prostate gland elements, and is a key mediator of immune responses with anti-cancerous properties. IL-10 is an anti-inflammatory cytokine that is associated with tumour malignancy which causes immune escape. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted with 540 subjects, comprising 269 prostate carcinoma patients and 271 controls. Genotyping was performed by PCR-RFLP and confirmed by real time PCR probe-based methods. Results: The findings indicated that the mutant heterozygous and homozygous genotype CC and GC+CC showed significant negative associations (p=0.01, OR=0.21; 95% CI: 0.08-0.51 and p=0.011, OR=0.43; 95% CI: 0.22-0.81, respectively) thus, less chance to be diagnosed as cancer against GG genotype of tobacco smoking patients. In addition, a heterozygous GC genotype at the same locus of IL-18 pro-inflammatory cytokine may aggravate the severity (OR=2.82; 95%CI 1.09-7.29 :p=001) so that patients are more likely to be diagnosed in advanced stage than with the GG wild homozygous genotype. Our results also illustrated that anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) genetic variants, although showing no significant association with susceptibility to cancer of the prostate, may gave profound effects on severity of the disease, as -819 TC (OR=4.60; 95%CI 1.35-15.73), and -592 AC (OR=5.04; 95%CI 1.08-25.43) of IL-10 in tobacco chewers and combined users (both chewers and smokers) respectively, are associated with diagnosis in more advanced stage than with other variants. Conclusions: We conclude that promoter genetic variants of IL-18 and IL-10 with various modes of tobacco exposure may affect not only susceptibility risk but also severity in prostate cancer.

  • We report the salient features of the magnetic properties of amorphous$ Fe_{84-x}Nb_7B_{8+x}Cu_1$ (x=0, 1, 4) alloys. The study of dc-magnetization properties and the ac-susceptibility was carried out. The temperature dependence of the magnetization follows the predictions of spin wave excitations with long wavelengths. Especially, the addition of boron modifies the magnetic properties: the spin wave stiffness increases from 56.8 to 65.7 meV$\AA$2 and Curie temperature increases from 298 K to 352 K. This result indicates a magnetic hardening of the exchange interaction by higher exchange energy. Thus, the substitution of iron by boron favours the increase of magnetic order in this system.

  • L-Arginine semi-oxalate (LASO) single crystal has been grown by solution growth technique at room temperature. The crystal structure and lattice parameters were determined for the grown crystal by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Photoluminescence studies confirm the violet fluorescence emission peak at 395 nm. Optical constants like band gap, refractive index, reflectance, extinction coefficient and electric susceptibility were determined from UV-VIS-NIR spectrum. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and ac conductivity of the compound were calculated at different temperatures and frequencies to analyze the electrical properties. The solid state parameters such as plasma energy, Penn gap, Fermi energy and polarizability were calculated to analyze second harmonic generation (SHG). Nonlinear optical property was discussed to confirm the SHG efficiency of the grown crystal.

  • Wustite with NaCl structure is successfully synthesized in a quartz tube sealed under vacuum ( ≒1×10 -3 torr). Hematite in an evacuated quartz tube progressively loses oxide ion at 1373 K. XRD patterns disclose that α-Fe2O3 is transformed into the Fe3O4 after heat treatment at 1373 K for 32 h, and the poorly crystallized FeO is appeared after heat treatment for 48 h. Finally, α-Fe2O3 is completely transformed into the well crystallized Fe 0.935O after heat treatment for 84 h. The electrical resistivity, ac-susceptibility measurement, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy corroborate the structural phase transition on the iron oxides prepared in a sealed quartz tube depending on the heating time at 1373 K.

  • Lewis bases were employed to control the stoichiometry of ferrite film prepared by light enhanced plating (LEP) technique. When 2,2'-bipyridyl was used as a Lewis base, conversion electron Mosbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) and x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) experiments showed that the main component of the ferrite films was metal-deficient magnetite (Fe3(1-δ)O4). Nonstoichiometry and roughness of LEP films were increased by the addition of 2,2'-bipyridyl. Using ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) as a Lewis base, produced film that was a mixture of magnetite and Υ-FeO(OH). No low temperature transition (Verwey transition) of magnetite was detected in resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements for the LEP films. Surface morphology of the LEP films was observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The size of dominant particles was about 0.2 μm.

  • The superconducting $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ was synthesized in oxygen condition at 1 atm. The starting material with 1 : 2 : 4 composition was obtained by pyrolysis of EDTA complex, which was converted to 1-2-3 phase during densification, followed by the 1-2-4 phase recovery at $810^{\circ}C$ . The phase presents were identified by XRD, TG, DTA and AC magnetic susceptibility. Our data indicated that considerable amounts of 1-2-4 phase formed but with the 1 : 2 : 3 phase or possibly 2-4-7 as visible. As the P($O_2$) increased with temperature, impurity peak, CuO ($2{\Theta}$ = 38.8), gradually decrease, and we conclude that the 1-2-4 phase is predominant bulk superconductor under the high oxygen pressure.
