  • AC induction motor equipped in electric train is driven by VVVF inverter which produces switching pulse like impuse. Impulse voltage is more dangerous than continuous alternative voltage for the insulating performance of AC induction motor. This paper has investigated PD characteristics caused by impuse voltage for stator coils inserted in AC induction motor.

  • The sensorless AC motor drive is a popular topic of study due to the cost and reliability of speed and position sensors. Most sensorless algorithms are based on the mathematical modeling of motors including electrical variables such as phase current and voltage. Therefore, the accuracy of such variables largely affects the performance of the sensorless AC motor drive. However, the output voltage of the SVPWM-VSI, which is widely used in sensorless AC motor drives, has considerable errors. In particular, the SVPWM-VSI is error-prone in the low speed range because the constant DC link voltage causes poor resolution in a low output voltage command and the output voltage is distorted due to dead time and voltage drop. This paper investigates a novel high-performance strategy for overcoming these problems in a sensorless ac motor drive. In this paper, a variation of the DC link voltage and a direct compensation for dead time and voltage drop are proposed. The variable DC link voltage leads to an improved resolution of the inverter output voltage, especially in the motor's low speed range. The direct compensation for dead time and voltage drop directly calculates the duration of the switching voltage vector without the modification of the reference voltage and needs no additional circuits. In addition, the proposed strategy reduces a current ripple, which deteriorates the accuracy of a monitored current and causes torque ripple and additional loss. Simulation and experimentation have been performed to verify the proposed strategy.

  • This paper presents an active auxiliary edge-resonant DC link snubber with a ringing surge damper and a three-phase voltage source type zero voltage soft-switching inverter with the resonat snubber treated here for the AC servo motor driver applications. The operation of the active auxiliary edge-resonant DC link snubber circuit with PWM voltage is described, together with the practical design method to select its circuit parameters. The three-phase voltage source type soft-switching inverter with a single edge-resonant DC link snubber treated here is evaluated and discussed for the small-scale permanent magnet (PM) type-AC servo motor driver from an experimental point of view. In addition to these, the AC motor stator current and its motor speed response for the proposed three-phase soft-switching inverter employing Intelligent Power Module(IPM) based on IGBTS are compared with those of the conventional three-phase hard-switching inverter using IPM. The practical effectiveness of the three-phase soft-switching inverter-fed permanent magnet type AC motor speed tracking servo driver is proven on the basis of the common mode current in a novel type three-phase soft-switching inverter-fed AC motor side and the conductive noise on the mains terminal interface voltage as compared with those of the conventional three-phase hard-switching inverter-fed permanent magnet type AC servo motor driver for the speed tracking applications.

  • Network-based controls for ac motor drive systems are becoming increasingly important. In this paper, an ac motor control system is implemented by a motor control module and three sensor modules such as a voltage sensor module, a current sensor module, and an encoder module. There will inevitably be network time delays from the sensor modules to the motor control system, which often degrades and even destabilizes the motor drive system. As a result, it becomes very difficult to estimate the network delayed ac sensor data. An algorithm to reduce the effects of network time delays on sensor data is proposed, using both a synchronization signal and a simple method for estimating the sensor data. The algorithm is applied to a vector controlled induction motor drive system, and the performance of the proposed algorithm is verified with experiments.

  • The vibration measurement of the AC motor, the most typically used vibration source, is essential to evaluate the causes of unexpected excessive vibration in many mechanical systems. The motor contributes to excite the resonance of the mechanical systems, and in turn tilt amplified vibration of the mechanical parts cause the motor to vibrate severely. Without the vibration evaluation on the motor itself, it is time consuming to solve the vibration problems. This paper deals the vibration measurement method for the AC motor itself.

  • The counter emf(electromotive forces) of a permanent magnet multi-phase brushless motor is generally a non-sinusoidal wave or a non-ideal trapezoid. So, conventional modeling using a sinusoidal wave or an ideal trapezoid counter emf can result in errors. In order to reduce modeling errors for simulation and analysis the properties of a multi-phase brushless AC motor, this paper proposes a phase variable model that is a mixed modeling technique using both Finite Element Analysis(FEA) based circuits and motor voltage equations. The phase model parameters including the counter emf voltage waveform are obtained by using of FEA, and the mixed modeling technique based on circuits and equations is used to implement a simulation model for multi-phase brushless AC motors with any counter emf voltage waveforms. Adequacy of the proposed model is established from the simulation and experimental results for a seven-phase brushless motor.

  • A Low cost and variable speed brushless motor drive system with single switch per phase is presented. The motor drive is realized with a novel two-phase flux-reversal-free switched reluctance motor and a split AC two switch converter. The strategy of the controller and the converter for its realization are described. Comparisons between a split AC converter, asymmetric converter, split DC converter, single controllable switch converter, and N+1 converter are performed for its device rating, cost, switching losses and conduction losses, and converter efficiency. The split AC converter is analyzed and simulated to verify the characteristics of the converter circuitry and control feasibility and the simulation results are presented. The efficiency with various loads is numerically estimated and experimentally compared from viewpoint of subsystem and system in details. The focus of this paper is to compare the presented motor drive system to the asymmetric converter system throughout experiments and demonstrate single switch per phase converter having comparable efficiency as the asymmetric converter system.
