We have developed an environment-friendly etching process, an alternative to the dichromic acid etching process, as a pretreatment of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) plastic for electroless plating. In order to plate ABS plastic in an electroless way, there should be fine holes on the surface of the ABS plastic to enhance mechanically the adhesion strength between the plastic surface and the plate. To make these holes, the surface was coated uniformly with dispersed chemical foaming agents in a mixture of environmentally friendly dispersant and solvent by the methods of dipping or direct application. The solvent seeps into just below the surface and distributes the chemical foaming agents uniformly beneath the surface. After drying off the surface, the surface was heated at a temperature well below the glass transition temperature of ABS plastic. By pyrolysis, the chemical foaming agents made fine holes on the surface. In order to discover optimum conditions for the formation of fine holes, the mixing ratio of the solvent, the dispersant and the chemical foaming agent were controlled. After the etching process, the surface was plated with nickel. We tested the adhesion strength between the ABS plastic and nickel plate by the cross-cutting method. The surface morphologies of the ABS plastic before and after the etching process were observed by means of a scanning electron microscope.

In this study, we tried to evaluate the mechanical properties of Polycarbonate(PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) plastic materials, which are frequently used as parts of home appliances and machinery, when repeated impacts were applied. A repeating impact tester for this research was designed and manufactured to apply repetitive impacts. Two types of plastic were repeatedly impacted under a constant load, and a tensile test was performed on the plastic material that was impacted. The tensile strength of PC plastic materials that received impact more than 2000 times was reduced by about 45 % and elongation was reduced by about 10 % when compared to impact free specimens. On the other hand, in ABS plastic, a reduction of tensile strength of about 20 % was observed at about 2,000 impacted specimen, but at about 20,000 repetitive impacted specimen, a tensile strength decrease of about 65 % was observed. And the elongation was reduced by 10 % due to the cyclic harding behavior of the material.

In this study, we developed the mold for the plastic cavity filter which is a kind of a wireless communication device. Since the cavity filter is made of aluminium, the cost of fabrication is high and the production rate is low. But we can produce plastic cavity filter part by injection molding process with the mold which was designed by our team. The dimension and surface quality of plastic cavity filter was investigated by varying the molding method (conventional and MmSH process) and two different types of resin(PC/ABS and ABS). In case of ABS part, the shrinkage of the inner partition walls was decreased when we adopted MmSH method. The weight of both ABS and PC/ABS parts increased and the surface roughness decreased with MmSH process.
Due to the environmental problem caused by plastics largely used in various fields, the importance of recycling is being emphasized. A research on material separation of ABS and PS mixed plastic waste, using a triboelectrostatic separator, was carried out for recovery the ABS. As a results of research on charging characteristic for choosing charging material, it was confirmed that ABS was optimum charging material for a tribo-charger in the material separation of ABS and PS. In the material separation using ABS charger, ABS grade of 99.5% and recovery of 92.5% were achieved at 20 kV, splitter position +2 cm from the center and 30% relative humidity. Therefore, material separation technique for recycling ABS and PS mixed plastic waste was established.
Recycled plastic composites of ABS/PE (50/50 and 20/80) and ABS/GF (90/10) were fabricated from plastic components of waste LCDs and effects of PE composition on elongation of ABS/PE composites were investigated. Increased PE contents improved elongation of the composite from 2.4% to 13%, which was attributed to increased crystalline behavior of the ABS/PE composite afforded by ductile PE fraction: SEM fractographs showed some sign of plastic deformation of PE matrix before ductile fracture of the composites.

Pit and rim formation on the Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene(ABS) plastic surface was evaluated after it was irradiated by $CO_2$ and Nd:YAG laser beams. Our results show that thermal effect floor was well observed at the outer wall of pit with $CO_2$ laser irradiated while it was not the case with Nd:YAG laser irradiated. Also the volume and depth of pit formation increase proportionally with the energy intensities of two laser irradiations, but there are significant differences in the slope, width, and FWHM of the Pit formation with two types of laser irradiations. This result shows that $CO_2$ laser irradiation leads to better cooling contraction effect while Nd:YAG laser irradiation induces better recoil pressure effect during the interaction between ABS plastic and laser beam irradiation. The shape of the laser marking could vary significantly depending on the traveling path of molten plastic during injection molding of ABS plastic. Therefore, the selection of material and molding process can have a great impact on the performance of optical storage media.
The wasted plastic PC/ABS retainer, polyurethane foam (PUF) and vinyl (PVC) skin. In order to investigate the recycling process, the multi-layered instrument panel Each of materials separated was shredded and crushed to create many small particles respectively. The separation of the foam and skin and retainer of zigzagged air blower. Pilot tests performed at the equipment yielded 98.8% by weight of the available PVC and 99.3% by weight of the available PC/ABS respectively. Secondly, the thermal stabilizer and the compatabilizer have been used to improve the physical propertied of recycled materials.. The properties of recycled PVC materials resulted in about 50% compared to that of virgin materials after treatment by Pb-St thermal stabilizer. In addition, the properties of recycled PC/ABS materials was also obtained about 80% compared to that of virgn materials after treatment by PMMA compatabilizer.

Rapid Prototyping (RP) technology has been advanced to fabricate initial prototypes from various materials. Stratasys′ Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is one of the typical RP processes that provide functional prototypes of ABS plastic. In order to predict the behavior of final ABS parts, it is critical to understand the material properties of the raw FDM process material, and the effect that FDM build parameters have on the FDM part. In this paper, we seek to characterize the properties of ABS parts fabricated by the FDM 1650. Using the Design of Experiment (DOE) approach, the process parameters of FDM, such as raster orientation, air gap, bead width, color, and model temperature were examined. Tensile strengths of crisscross specimens, 〔45°/-45°〕, cross specimens, 〔0°/90°〕, and directionally fabricated tensile specimens (〔0°〕 and 〔90°〕) were measured and compared with the injection molded FDM-ABS P400 material. For the FDM parts made with a -0.003"air gap, the typical tensile strength ranged between 50 percent and 83 percent of the strength of injection molded ABS P400. From the experiments, a couple of build rules for designing FDM parts were obtained.

Currently, the most used forms, such as euro form and aluminum form, has many problems. There are issues with noise of construction site because of existing forms' material and issues with safety because of heavy weight. To solve these problems, there are many researches on using plastic and composite materials on the formwork. However, plastic has lower tensile strength than the steel and aluminum and composite materials are expensive. Therefore, constructors are avoid to use the forms with new materials. The purpose of this study is to develop light-weight plastic form to solve these existing problems by using ABS with optimized design. To verify, the study measured the amount of deflection from developed form through a load test. The test result showed a deflection of 1.15mm when 1.4ton was loaded in the middle of form. The result of the study verified that the usage of ABS and optimized design effectively reduced the weight and noise. Also, it's performance was verified through the load test.

Plastic product manufacturing industry has usually focused on a mechanical and physical characteristics of molding. Recently, not only these characteristics but also the aesthetic value is significantly considering. Especially, the molding's gloss, which we can easily distinguish, is an important aesthetic point. In this study, it were investigated that the gloss variation of ABS moldings by changing injection conditions such as injection pressures, injection speed, holding pressures melt and mold temperatures by injection molding experiment. The experimental results revealed that the holding pressure was the most active condition on gloss of ABS molding.
