  • It is widely acknowledged that the human auditory system is organized tonotopically and people generally listen to sounds as a function of frequency distribution through the auditory system. However, it is still unclear how acoustic features of speech sounds are indicated to the human brain in terms of speech perception. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether two sounds with similar high-frequency characteristics in the acoustic analysis show similar results at the level of auditory brainstem. Thirty three young adults with normal hearing participated in the study. As stimuli, two Korean monosyllables (i.e., /ja/ and /cha/) and four frequencies of toneburst (i.e., 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz) were used to elicit the auditory brainstem response (ABR). Measures of monosyllable and toneburst were highly replicable and the wave V of waveform was detectable in all subjects. In the results of Pearson correlation analysis, the /ja/ syllable had a high correlation with 4000 Hz of toneburst which means that its acoustic characteristics (i.e., 3671~5384 Hz) showed the same results in the brainstem. However, the /cha/ syllable had a high correlation with 1000 and 2000 Hz of toneburst although it has acoustical distribution of 3362~5412 Hz. We concluded that there was disagreement between acoustic features and physiology outcomes at the auditory brainstem level. This finding suggests that an acoustical-perceptual mapping study is needed to scrutinize human speech perception.

  • The clinical study was carried out the 43 patients with Depression who were treated in Department of Neuropsychiatry, College of Oriental Medicine, Dae Jeon University from 22 February 2000 to 14 November 2001. The results were summarized as follows. 1. The ratio of male and female was 10:33, 60's(32.6%) was frequent, no inducing factor(38.3%) was seen in a lot of cases and many patients came to our hospital by way of west-neuropsychiatry(56.8%). 2. The period of clinical history was frequent from 3 to 10 years(23.2%), the most frequent preceding disease was cardiovascular systemic disease(18.4%). 3. The main clinical symptoms were apprehension alpitation(13.4%), anorexia(9.8%), headache nuchal region stiffness(9.8%), general body weakness(6.5%), chest discomfort(6.5%), dizziness(5.7%), febris(5.3%) and constipation(5.3%). 4. The patient's tongue aspect had pink tongue and empty fur(32.6%) and pulse type had thin and deficient pulse(39.5%). The prescription drugs were Chunggansoyo-san(30.0%), purging liver and alleviating depression to regulate qi, and Guibiondam-tang(15.8%) eliminating phlegm, cooling pericardium and warming gallbladder. 5. The curve was within normal range at Psychoneural system(81.4%), and Visceral system(90.1%). 6. The regulation was Normal(48.1%), RL(27.9%), RR(20.2%) at Psychoneural system and Normal(45.9%), RL(28.5%), RR(20.3%) at Visceral system. 7. Activity and Reactivity had much lower response at 1th, 2th, 3th, 4th, 7th SANGHAN, Polalization had much higher response at 1th, 4th, SANGHAN and much lower response at 2th, 3th, 7th SANGHAN.

  • In the wireless ATM networks, a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is required to support an integrated mix of multimedia traffic services. The MAC protocol should be designed in a way that the limited wireless bandwidth can be efficiently utilized maximizing the Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees for various traffic service classes. In this paper, a Dynamic Resource Allocation-based MAC protocol, which satisfies QoS of each traffic service class in the wireless ATM environment, is proposed. The proposed MAC protocol adopts the dynamic channel allocation schemes for a mix of different traffic service classes. The suggested MAC protocol is designed to provide the QoS guarantees for Constant Bit Rate (CBR) or real-time Variable Bit Rate (VBR) traffic through fixed or dynamic reservation. For Available Bit Rate (ABH) traffic, which has the lowest priority among the traffic classes, large improvement in delay by reserving the minimum bandwidth is shown. And for real-time VBR traffic, increase in throughput of transmission is demonstrated because of bandwidth, which is allocated through contention at the initial phase and without contention thereafter.

  • 1. Objectives Functional medicine is a system which utilizes certain Investigative and treatment methods that are primarily oriented toward the recognition of functional disorder. The 7-zone-diagnostic system(VEGA-DFM722 and ABR-2000, etc) is a diagnostic device which applies pulse signals to predetermined bodily locations. We think that we can discriminate between Soeumin, Soyangin and Taeumin with this system. 2. Methods The subject of our study is no disease men and women who are decided the same constitution both survey of the QSCC II and diagnosis of specialist of the Sasang Constitution. All subject are 76(Soeumin(N=24), Soyangin(N=17), Taeumin(N=35)) cases. We make an analysis of a distinctive feature on the result of the VEGA-DFM722. 3. Results and Conclusions 1) Soeumin or Taeumin women had that the red bar graphs of and 1, 2 and 3 are lower than the red bar graphs of zone 4, 5, 6 and 7 in factor AA on the result of the VEGA-DFM722 with the naked eye. Soyangin or Taeumin men had that the red bar graphs of zone 1,2 and 3 are higher than the red bar graphs of tone 4, 5, 6 and 7 in factor AA on the result of the VEGA-DFM722 with the naked eye. 2) The typical discrimination between Soeumin and Soyangin showed statistical significance(p<0.05) in Factor PF 4(red bar) on the result of VEGA-DFM722.

  • Objective : To characterize Five Woons of Asian women who live at Los Angeles area in U.S.A Methods : A set of physical tests and diagnostic questions were given to 242 Asian female subjects who were treated for their symptoms at a clinic of Asian medicine near Los Angeles in USA. The participants were given their constitutions, one of the Five Woons based on their birthdays. The physical tests included a body composition via Inbody 4.0 and an autonomic bioelectric response record via ABR2000. The oneway analysis of variance was applied to compare the means of the Five Woons and the physical test results. The Cross tabulation analysis was also applied to look for the effectiveness of Five Woons on the symptoms. Results : 1. In the body composition items, the LSD(least significant difference) showed that there were significant differences between the Soil Woon and the other Four Woons which are Water, Metal, Fire and Wood Woons in weight, fat, body fat %, BMI (p<0.2). 2. Based on the LSD, significant differences were observed among the Five Woons in R5, R6 and R7(p<0.2). 3. The cross tabulation analysis showed the significant effectiveness of the Five Woons on the five symptoms including dizziness, hot and cold, lower body edema, fatigue and to take a medication for high blood pressure out of 24 diagnostic questions (p<0.2). Conclusions : Further clinical research is necessary to develop a more delicate questionnaire and look for ways of characterizing the Five Woons. The diagnosis and corresponding treatment based on the Five Woons should be further studied in view of the Oriental medicine.
