  • With the improvement of computer power and technology, fracture modelling by finite element methods has become a topic of extensive studies. However, fracture simulation much limited to an academic study of crack propagation with a fine mesh. Element deletion method is a useful tool for estimating damage due to accidental or extreme loads on structures, provided that an effective and realistic criterion is established for simulating the material failure and subsequent element deletion. In this study, ABAQUS/Explicit is used to simulate the material failure on the basis of experimental results by X. Huang et al. Through numerical experiments, we suggest a formulation to determine the failure strain associated with the size and thickness of removed elements.

  • In this paper, we developed a physically-based micromechanical model for inelastic deformation of ceramic powders. The aggregate response of ceramic particles was modeled using the two-surface yield function which considered the shear-induced dilatancy caused by friction, rolling resistance and cohesion between powder particles and consolidation caused by plastic deformation of powder themselves under high compression. The constitutive equations were implemented into the user-subroutine VUMAT of finite element program ABAQUS/Explicit. The material parameters in the constitutive model were identified by calibrating the model to reproduce data from triaxial compression tests and simple compression tests. The density distribution obtained by using the proposed model was in good quantitative agreement with the experimental results of the triaxial compression and cold isostaic compression as well.

  • Design of stepwise foam claddings subjected to air-blast is performed based on random Voronoialgorithm. FE models are constructed using the random Voronoialgorithm, and numerical analysis is carried out to simulate deformation mode and energy absorption of the cladding by the ABAQUS/Explicit software. The FE model is validated by test result, and good agreement is achieved. The deformation patterns are presented to give an insight into the influences of distribution on deformation mechanisms. The energy absorbed by the stepwise foam cladding is examined, and the parameter effects, including layer number, gradient, and blast loading, are discussed. Results indicate that the energy absorption capacity increases with the number of layer, gradient degree, and blast pressure increasing.

  • In this study, a finite element analysis for high-speed blanking of mild steel is performed. A thermomechanically coupled simulation model of a blanking process was developed using ABAQUS/Explicit. Through a simulation of the high-speed blanking process of mild steel, the influence of the punch speed, tool edge radius, and work material thickness on the development of the plastic heat and punch load were studied. The results of the study revealed that a higher punch speed caused thermal softening of the work material and decreased the punch load. Decreasing tool edge radius could help reduce the punch load. In addition, the results of the study revealed that the thermal softening effect was more dominant in the blanking of a mild steel sheet with a greater thickness as compared to that in the blanking of a mild steel sheet with a lower thickness.

  • In this article, the multi-objective optimization of cylindrical aluminum tubes under axial impact load is presented. The specific absorbed energy and the maximum crushing force are considered as objective functions. The geometric dimensions of tubes including diameter, length and thickness are chosen as design variables. D/t and L/D ratios are constricted in the range of which collapsing of tubes occurs in concertina or diamond mode. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II is applied to obtain the Pareto optimal solutions. A back-propagation neural network is constructed as the surrogate model to formulate the mapping between the design variables and the objective functions. The finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit is used to generate the training and test sets for the artificial neural networks. To validate the results of finite element model, several impact tests are carried out using drop hammer testing machine.

  • A finite element method (FEM) study was performed on micro-scale blanking of an AL6061-T6 foil with negative clearance. ABAQUS/explicit was used to prepare a simulation model of negative clearance blanking with tools having an edge radius comparable to the foil thickness. The Johnson-Cook plastic flow model was used in the simulations for the material flow. The FEM model was used to study the effects of various blanking parameters on the negative clearance blanking process and quality of the blank. In particular, the projecting edge on the bottom of the blank was observed. Research on negative blanking at the micro-scale is summarized and discussed.

  • The advantages of precast production are fast construction, reduction of labor and insurance of good quality. In recently, the application of the precast production is increased in the earth retaining wall field. This paper presents the results of the numerical modelling that was carried out to evaluate the stability of precast and prestressed earth retaining wall under dynamic train loading. The two-dimensional explicit dynamic finite element method (ABAQUS) was used to carry out the numerical analyses. The train loading to act track is calculated by using the real measured phase angle data. Mainly, the displacement and acceleration of wall structure in time domain analyzed to evaluate the stability under the dynamic train load.

  • Fine blanking is a specialized form of blanking where there is no fracture zone when shearing. This is achieved by compressing the whole part and then an upper and lower punch extract the blank. This allows the process to hold very tight tolerances, and perhaps eliminate secondary operations. In the present study, tensile test and numerical simulation has been performed to investigate distribution of deformation and stress of car seat recliner. The commercial ABAQUS/Explicit software was applied for analyzing the stress and strain of the recliner. In analysis, three lock gear has reached the maximum moment on rotational degree of 2.27. This is more than two times than maximum moment of same size recliner, and can be used safely. Therefore, these can use as criterion of actual structural design.

  • The package used to transport radioactive materials, which is called by cask, must be safe under normal and hypothetical accident conditions. These requirements for the cask design must be verified through test or finite element analysis. Since the cost for FE analysis is less than one for test. the verification by FE analysis is mainly used. But due to the complexity of mechanical behaviors. the results depends on how users apply the codes and it can cause severe errors during analysis. In this paper, finite element analysis is carried out for the 9 meters free drop and the puncture condition of the hypothetical accident conditions using LS-DYNA3D and ABAQUS/Explicit. We have investigated the analyzing technique for the free drop impact test of the cask and found several vulnerable cases to errors. The analyzed results were compared with each other. We have suggested a reliable and relatively simple analysis technique for the drop test of spent nuclear fuel casks.
