  • The annealing behavior of a 5083 Al alloy deformed at cryogenic temperature was investigated, focusing on the evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties. Especially, the effects of annealing temperature, $150~300^{\circ}C$, and time, 3∼60min., on microstructures and mechanical properties of the sheets received 85% reduction at cryogenic temperature were investigated. The optimization of the annealing conditions resulted in a mixture of equiaxed grains and elongated subgrains, exhibiting a good combination of uniform elongation and high strength.

  • In this study the fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated for the surface cracks in aluminum alloy A5083-O plate and its weldment. Several kinds of specimens were tested at room temperature. The Eccentric specimens(E1.0, E2.5) subjected to combined stresses(tension+bending) were tested and the welded specimens with weld toes(TOE1, TOE2) were tested in order to verify the method to consider the stress concentration such as weld toe. It was ascertained that the surface crack growth property in the weld toe could be predicted by the corrected Pang's equation proposed in this study.

  • This study deals with friction stir welding of aluminum alloy(A5083). Welding conditions were applied that revolution 2000rpm, friction pressure 25MPa, angle between stir rod section and plate 4$^{\circ}$, projection pin diameter 4mm, traverse speed 0.5mm/sec, 1.0mm/sec, 1.5mm/sec. The experimental results as follows; 1. Welding beads were superior in traverse speed 1.0mm/sec and it were formed plenty of flash in traverse speed 0.5 mm/sec. Welding beads were rough in traverse speed 1.5mm/sec. 2. The maximum tensile strength was 211MPa in traverse speed 1.0mm/sec, in this case the strength was 85% of A5083 base metal tensile strength.

  • In terms of mechanical and metallurgical characteristics, the effect of tool plunge depths(0.2, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5mm) on weldability in dissimilar Al5083-O/DP590 friction spot joint has been clarified. From the results, it is found that the stirred nugget was stably formed at a plunge depth of more than 0.7mm, which is caused by improved stirring action against each other material. With increasing a plunge depth, the thickness of intermetallic compound(IMC) layer in Al5083-O/DP590 joint has a tendency to increase. The tensile shear strength reaches to the maximum failure load of 6.5kN at a plunge depth of 0.7mm due to relatively small decrease in the thickness of Al5083-O sheet and relatively minute thickness of IMC layer, compared with those of other plunge depth conditions.

  • One of the most efficient designs for manufacturing LNG tank is the Moss spherical type because it has been validated through precise analyses with respect to reliability and construction safety by stress analysis. The Moss spherical tank is assembled with hundreds of Al thick plate patches that are deformed to curved shape at elevated temperature and welded together. It is essential to evaluate the amount of deflection in the Al5083 thick plate when the patch is transferred from the heating chamber to the forming die since the patch has a length of 12,000 mm and a thickness of 60 mm. Based on FE analysis results, a design procedure for minimizing deflection in Al5083 thick plate during transfer using a moving carrier is demonstrated in this paper.

  • Recently, use of thick Al 5083 plate has increased in production of LNG storage tank. In general, multi-pass welding has been used to achieve sufficient penetration in thick plate welding. High current welding which enables high deposition and deep penetration is preferred in thick plate welding because the increase of number of pass increases manufacturing cost and formation of weld defect. In this study, welding characteristics according to various Ar/He shielding gas composition was investigated in high current MIG welding. The bead-on-plate welding and V groove welding were conducted on Al 5083 alloy with a thickness of .25 mm. The effect of shielding gas composition on bead shape was evaluated and proper shielding gas composition was proposed. Also arc stability was examined under selected shielding gas composition. One side-one pass welding experiments were conducted for V groove specimen with a thickness of 25 mm. Mechanical properties and hardness profiles were measured for the V groove specimens.

  • It was attempted to improve wear resistance and durability under the load surface pressure that make a formation of the thick (mm-order) hard-surfacing layer for aluminum alloy of 5083. The thick hard layers were formed on the surface of 5083 by TIG overlay method. Al-(25.4, 33.6, 45.7 mass%) Cu filler metals which were newly developed were overlaid on two base metals forming the one bead, one layer and two layers. The investigation was made on the characteristics of hardening and wear resistance in relation to the microstructure of overlaid layers with selection of optimum overlaying condition.

  • In order to investigate the effect of surface treatment(Anodizing) and rolling in Al 5083-H131 alloy, ballistic testing was conducted. Ballistic resistance of these materials. was measured by protection ballistic limit(V$_{50}$), a statical velocity with 50% probability for incomplete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are observed respectfully, resulting from V$_{50}$ test and Projectile Through Plates(PTP) test at velocities greater than V$_{50}$. PTP tests were conducted with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature were also conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Resistance to penetration, and penetration modes of Al 5052-H34 alloy, compared to those of Al 5083-H131 alloy.alloy.

  • As a considerable, experimental approach, an Auto-carriage type of $CO_2$ welding machine and a MIG(Metal Inert Gas) welding robot under inert gas atmosphere were utilized in order to realize Al 5083 welding applied to hull and relevant components of green Al leisure ships. This study aims at investigating the effect of welding conditions(current, voltage, welding speed, etc) on thermal deformation that occurs as welding operation and tensile characteristics after welding, by using Al 5083, non-ferrous material, applied to manufacturing of co-environmental Al leisure ships. With respect to welding condition to minimize the thermal deformation, 150A and 16V at the wire-feed rate of 6mm/sec were acquired in the process of welding Al 5083 through an auto carriage type of $CO_2$ welding feeder. As to tensile characteristics of Al 5083 welding through a MIG welding robot, most of tensile specimens showed the fracture behavior on HAZ(Heat Affected Zone) located at the area joined with weld metal, except for some cases. Especially, for the case of the Al specimen with 5mm thickness, 284.62MPa of tensile strength and 11.41% of elongation were obtained as an actual allowable tensile stress-strain value. Mostly, after acquiring the optimum welding condition, the relevant welding data and technical requirements might be provided for actual welding operation site and welding procedure specification(WPS).
