Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) is very interesting power source due to high power density, simple construction and operation at low temperature. But it has problems such as high cost, improvement of performance and effect of temperature. These problems can be approached to be solved by using mathematical models which are useful tools for analysis and optimization of fuel cell performance and for heat and water management. In this paper, the present work is to develop an electrochemical model to examine the electrochemical process inside PEM fuel cell. A complete set of considerations of mass, momentum, species and charge is developed and solved numerically with proper account of electrochemical kinetics. When depth of gas channel becomes thinner, diffusion of reactant makes well into gas diffusion layer(GDL) and the performance increases. Although at low current region there is little voltage difference between experimental data of PEM fuel cell and numerical data. When the porosity size of gas diffusion layer for PEM fuel cell is bigger, oxygen diffusion occurs well and oxygen mass fraction appears high in catalyst layer.
In order to develop as a natural source of anticancer materials of Cudrania tricuspidata, the cytotoxicity of methanol extracts by harvesting parts and times against 8 cell lines including 293 (normal kidney cells) and A-431 (epidermoid carcinoma cells) were investigated using MTT assay. All harvesting parts had hardly cytotoxicity against 293. And methanol extracts of stem bark and root bark showed very high cytotoxicities against 7 cancer cell lines. The cytotoxicity was the highest against HeLa (cervix adenocarcinoma cells) and followed by MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma cells), AGS (stomach adenocarcinoma cells), HT-29 (colon adenocarcinoma cells), HepG2 (hepatoblastoma cells), A549 (lung carcinoma cells) and A-431. By the way, leaf extract had a cytotoxicity against only AGS and ripe fruit extract had no cytotoxicity. Among harvesting times, the cytotoxicity of root bark were high from April to September but that of stem bark showed a little difference. These results showed that anticancer activities of Cudrania tricuspidata extracts were eventful changes by harvesting parts and times.
This paper proposes an adaptive routing protocol called ARCA for converged ad-hoc and cellular network (CACN). Due to the limitation of both bandwidth and transmission range in a cell, a mobile host (MH) may not be able to make a call during busy time. CACN offers a flexible traffic diversion mechanism that allows a MH to use the bandwidth in another cell to ease the congestion problem and increase the throughput in a cellular network. Based on the presentation of CACN's physical characteristics, the paper details the design issues and operation of the adaptive routing protocol for CACN (ARCA). Detailed numerical analysis is presented in terms of both route request rejection rate and routing overhead, which, along with the simulation results, have indicated the effectiveness and efficiency of the ARCA protocol.

We have studied the pressure-dependent liquid crystal's dynamics in a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal panel with thin film transistor by applying an external pressure to it. When the external pressure is applied to the panel in a dark state, the disclination lines were generated as a light leakage whereas they did not appear in a simple test cell that has only pixel and common electrodes. It was because the disclination lines were Provoked by the electric field between pixel electrode and data/gate bus line for active matrix driving. Consequently, the external pressure resulted in dynamic instability of the liquid crystal so that the disclination lines at the data/gate bus line intruded into the active area.
Notch signaling plays a pivotal role in cell fate determination, cellular development, cellular self-renewal, tumor progression, and has been linked to developmental disorders and carcinogenesis. Notch1 is activated through interactions with the ligands of neighboring cells, and acts as a transcriptional activator in the nucleus. The Notch1 intracellular domain (Notch1-IC) regulates the expression of target genes related to tumor development and progression. The Notch1 protein undergoes modification after translation by posttranslational modification enzymes. Phosphorylation modification is critical for enzymatic activation, complex formation, degradation, and subcellular localization. According to the nuclear cycle, Notch1-IC is degraded by E3 ligase, FBW7 in the nucleus via phosphorylation-dependent degradation. Here, we summarize the Notch signaling pathway, and resolve to understand the role of phosphorylation in the regulation of Notch signaling as well as to understand its relation to cancer. Background: The efficacy of ginseng, the representative product of Korea, and its chemical effects have been well investigated. The ginsenoside RG3 has been reported to exhibit apoptotic, anticancer, and antidepressant-like effects. Methods: In this report, the putative effect of RG3 on several cellular function including cell survival, differentiation, development and aging process were evaluated by monitoring each specific marker. Also, mitochondrial morphology and function were investigated in ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated normal human dermal fibroblast cells. Results: RG3 treatment increased the expression of extracellular matrix proteins, growth-associated immediate-early genes, and cell proliferation genes in UV-irradiated normal human dermal fibroblast cells. And, RG3 also resulted in enhanced expression of antioxidant proteins such as nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 and heme oxygenase-1. In addition, RG3 affects the morphology of UV-induced mitochondria and plays a role in protecting mitochondrial dysfunction. Conclusioin: RG3 restores mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and membrane potential via its antioxidant effects in skin cells damaged by UV irradiation, leading to an increase in proteins linked with the extracellular matrix, cell proliferation, and antioxidant activity.
Inhibitors of EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) kinase activity may prove useful to therapeutically intervene in cancer and to treat other proliferative diseases. In this study, we investigated the inhibitive effects of two compounds named 63013 and 63033 possess a [1,4]-dioxino quinazoline structure that links the alkoxy side chains together and their structural characteristics are considered to allow better solubility than the dialkoxyquinazoline derivatives. The EGFR kinase activities of A431 human epidermoid carcinoma cells, stimulated by EGF were inhibited by treatment with 63013 and 63033 in a dose-dependent manner respectively. Consistent with the compound-mediated EGFR kinase suppression, the major EGF-related downstream target molecules, such as MEK1/2, MAPK p44/42, AKT and STAT3, were also suppressed by both compounds. Interestingly, both compounds led to cell growth inhibition at a lower concentration than that of Gefitinib (Iressa$^{(R)}$). Collectively, our study showed that both compounds may have good therapeutic potential as an EGFR kinase specific inhibitor to treat EGFR-related diseases.
Various approaches have been attempted in translational moyamoya disease research. One promising material for modeling and treating this disease is vascular progenitor cells, which can be acquired and expanded from patient peripheral blood. These cells may provide a novel experimental model and enable us to obtain insights regarding moyamoya disease pathogenesis. We briefly present the recent accomplishments in regard to the studies of vascular progenitor cells in moyamoya disease.
In our previous studies, 6-hydroxy-7-methoxychroman-2-carboxylic acid N-phenylamide (KL-1156) was identified as a good inhibitor of nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ (NF-${\kappa}B$) activation. In continuation of our study, we describe the structure-activity relationship of chroman derivatives containing N-arylalkyl groups and their NF-${\kappa}B$ inhibitory activities. In addition, inhibitory effects of cell proliferation are evaluated against human cancer cell lines (NCI-H23 and PC-3). The most active compounds 3i and 3j contained diphenylethyl and diphenylpropyl side chain on amide nitrogen.

Pericarpium castaneae extracts have variously potent activities, such as anti-oxidative activity and free radical scavenging activity. in vivo and in vitro studies both indicate that pericarpium castaneae extracts acts as a free radical scavenger($IC_{50}:7.6{\mu}g/ml$) stronger than gallic acid($IC_{50}:12.5{\mu}g/ml$) and ellagic acid($IC_{50}:15{\mu}g/ml$) which could prevent cutaneous UV damages and skin aging. The extracts showed a good effect as a anti-oxidant($IC_{50}:50{\mu}g/ml$). It was shown that the appearance of wrinkle in human skin was reduced by topical application of pericarpium castaneae extracts. And the treatment of human skin with the extracts increased the elasticity and moisture of the skin. We investigated the effect of the pericarpium castaneae extracts on production of extracellular matrix using cultured A431 fibroblast cells. The results indicated that the extracts had no detectable effect on collagen synthesis. But synthesis of cell adhesion protein was increased by the extracts. The results suggest that increase of cell adhesion protein synthesis by pericarpium castaneae extracts has closely related to reduction of wrinkle in skin.
