The hot tear susceptibility of Al alloys was investigated by using a constrained-rod mold designed to quantify 8 types of tear tendency. The severity of the crack was scored by 5 grades on a scale of 0 to 4, with 0 being "no crack formed" and 4 being "complete separation by crack". The Hot Tear Susceptibility index (HTS) which consists of crack type scores and position scores, was proposed to compare the hot tear tendency of Al alloys. A356.0 cast alloy and AA6061 wrought Al alloy showed an HTS value of 27.5 and 53 respectively. The effects of Si, Cu, and Mg content on hot tear tendency were also investigated with a constrained-rod mold. The variation of HTS values with alloying elements represents similar behavior in the variation of the solidification range in a pseudo binary phase diagram.
Microstructure of A356 aluminium alloys cast in a permanent mold was investigated by optical microscope and image analyzer, with particular respect to the shape and size distribution of iron intermetallics known as ${\beta}-phase$ ($Al_5FeSi$). Morphologies of the ${\beta}-phase$ was found to change gradually with the Be:Fe ratio like these. In Be-free alloys, ${\beta}-phase$ with needlelike morphology was well developed, but script phase was appeared when the Be:Fe ratio is above 0.2:1. With the Be:Fe ratios of 0.4:1-1:1, script phase as well as Be-rich phase was also observed. In case of higher Be addition, above 1:1, Be-rich phase was observed on all regions of the specimens, and increasing of the Be:Fe ratios gradually make the Be-rich phase coarse. It was also observed that the ${\beta}-phase$ with needlelike morphology was coarsened with increase of the Fe content in Be-free alloys. However, in Be-added alloys, length and number of these ${\beta}-phases$ were considerably decreased with the increased Be:Fe ratio. It was concluded that Fe impurity element to be crystallized into needlelike intermetallics was tied up by Be addition element, and new phases were crystallized into script or Be-rich intermetallics.
The microvickers hardness and microstructure of Fe/Al composite fabricated by squeeze casting method were investigated. Pure Al and A356 Alloy were chosen for the matrix composition and Fe preform was fabricated with sintered Fe powder at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 30min. under hydrogen atmosphere. Experimental variables were included preheating temperature, melt temperature and applied pressure. Analysing the experimental result concerning microstructure of fabricated composites, Fe/A356 composite showed improved microstructure at $600^{\circ}C$ melt temperature and $350^{\circ}C$ preform preheating temperature in Fe distribution and Infiltrated distance. The results of EDX and XRD showed that the interfacial zones of Fe/Al composite were composed of non-equilibrium intermetallic layers[$(Al_5Fe_2)_x$, $Al_{13}Fe_4m\;Fe_3Al$, FeAl]. The microvickers hardness of Fe/Al composite showed higher value than Fe/A356 composite in interface.
During the casting process, it is possible to minimize shrinkage and blowholes by modifying the casting design. However, it is impossible to eliminate these factors completely. Therefore, mechanical design engineers apply a sufficient safety factor owing to the possibility of insufficient performances of the cast products. In this paper, prediction method of the fatigue life of cast products containing shrinkage is conducted by using CT (computed tomography) and the SSM (shape simplification method), and additional fatigue analyses are carried out. The analysis results are then compared to results from actual experiments on samples with shrinkage defects. It is found to be that the considering actual shrinkage in cast products by means of stress and fatigue analyses is more accurate and effective. It is also considered that the proposed hot spot method provides us a good tool to predict the fatigue lifes of cast product.

High temperature high cycle and low cycle fatigue deformation behavior of automotive heat resistant aluminum alloys (A356 and A319 based) were investigated in this study. The microstructures of both alloys were composed of primary Al-Si dendrite and eutectic Si phase. However, the size and distribution for eutectic Si phase varied: a coarse and inhomogeneous distributed was observed in alloy B (A319 based). A brittle intermethallic phase of ${\alpha}-Fe\;Al_{12}(Fe,Mn)_3Si_2$ was detected only in B alloy. Alloy B exhibited high fatigue life only under a high stress amplitued condition in the high cycle fatigue results, whereas alloy A showed high fatigue life when stress was lowered. With regard to the low-cycle fatigue result ($250^{\circ}C$) showing higher fatigue life as ductility increased, alloy A demonstrated higher fatigue life under all of the strain amplitude conditions. Fractographic observations showed that large porosities and pores near the outside surface could be the main factor in the formation of fatigue cracks. In alloy B. micro-cracks were formed in both the brittle intermetallic and coarse Si phasese. These micro-cracks then coalesced together and provided a path for fatigue crack propagation. From the observation of the differences in microstructure and fractography of these two automotive alloys, the authors attempt to explain the high-temperature fatigue deformation behavior of heat resistant aluminum alloys.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of rheocast A356 aluminum alloy by electromagnetic stirring are studied. In the electromagnetic stirring, main parameters are stirring current and stirring time. Stirring current is ranged from 0 A to 60 A, and stirring time is 20, 40, and 60 sec. In the rheocasting, injection velocity and applied pressure are changed. In this paper, the effect of stirring current and stirring time on the morphology and mechanical properties are investigated and analyzed.

A semi-solid forming technology has a lot of advantages compared to the die casting, squeeze casting and hot/cold forging, so semi-solid forming has been studied actively. Semi-solid forming has two methods. One is thixoforming with reheating of prepared billet, the other is rheoforming with cooled melt until semi-solid state. Thixoforging technology can produce non-dendritic alloys for semi-solid forming complex shaped parts in metal alloys. In this study, the thixoforging was experimented with made rheology materials by the spiral stirrer equipment. Rheology materials for forging were made by A356 casting aluminum alloy and A6061 wrought aluminum alloy. After experiment, forged samples were measured microstructure and were heat treated for high mechanical properties.
A good fluidity of high strength Al-alloys is required to cast thin wall castings needed to reduce the weight of cast parts. The fluidity, measured as the length to which the metal flows in a standard channel, is affected by many factors, such as the pouring temperature, solidification type of the alloy, the channel thickness, melt head, mold materials and temperature, coating etc. Therefore the experimentally measured fluidity scatters very much and makes it difficult to estimate the fluidity of a melt with a few measurements. The effect of Ti content and grain refinement on the fluidity of high strength aluminum alloy was investigated with a test casting with 8 thin flow channels to reduce the scattering of the fluidity results. The fluidity of Al-4.8%Cu-0.6%Mn Al-6.2%Zn-1.6%Mg-1.0%Cu and well-known commercial aluminum alloy, A356 was tested. Initial content of Ti was varied from 0 to 0.2wt% and Al-5Ti-B master alloy was added for grain refinement. The flow length varied linearly with superheat. By adding Ti and Al-5Ti-B, the fluidity increased. The grain size decreased by adding grain refiner at the same time. The fluidity depended on the degree of grain refinement. The fluidity of the alloy solidifying in mushy type is improved by grain refinement, because grain refinement increases the solid fraction at the time of flow stoppage.
As the semi-solid forming technology has a lot of advantages compared to the die casting, squeeze casting and hot/cold forging, it has been studied actively. This paper focuses on the thixoforging of the rheological materials fabricated by the spiral mechanical stirring equipment with A356 casting aluminum alloy and A6061 wrought aluminum alloy. Formability tests of rheological materials fabricated by spiral mechanical stirring were carried out and the microstructures of forged sample were observed. After thixoforging experiment, the heat-treated conditions of forged samples are investigated to improve the mechanical properties. These results are able to suggest the possibility of commercialization for rheological materials fabricated by spiral mechanical stirring.
Shape memory alloys(SMAs) exhibit pseudoelastic behavior, characterized by the recovery of an original shape even after severe deformation, during loading and unloading within appropriate temperature regimes. The distinctive mechanical behavior is associated with stress-induced transformation of austenite to martensite during loading and reverse transformation to austenite upon unloading. To develop a material model for SMAs, it is imperative to consider the difference in moduli of active phases. For example, the Young’s modulus of the martensite is one-third to one half of that of the austenite. The model proposed herein is a modification of the one proposed recently by Ho[17]. The prediction of the behavior of SMAs during unloading before the onset of reverse transformation was improved by introducing a new internal state variable incorporating the variation of the elastic modulus.
