  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic weakness of existing nonseismic low-rise piloti-type apartment buildings which have the irregularities of weak story, soft story, and torsion simultaneously. A prototype 4-story RC building was selected, analyzed using linear dynamic procedure and finally evaluated according to the acceptance criteria of FEM356. This building satisfies the criteria.

  • In this study, fatigue samples were prepared from cylinder head parts that are actually used in domestic (A) and foreign (B) automobiles; high-temperature, high-cycle, and low-cycle fatigue characteristics were then evaluated and compared. A study on the correlation between the microstructural factor and high temperature fatigue characteristic was attempted. The chemical compositions of the heat resistant aluminum alloys above represented A356 (A) and A319 (B), respectively. The result of the tensile strength test on material B at $250^{\circ}C$ was higher by 30.8MPa compared to material A. On the other hand, elongation was 8.5% higher for material A. At $130{\circ}C$, material B exhibited high fatigue life given high cycle fatigue under high stress, whereas material A showed high fatigue life when stress was lowered. With regard to the low-cycle fatigue result ($250^{\circ}C$) showing higher fatigue life as ductility is increased, material A demonstrated higher fatigue life. Through the observation of the differences in microstructure and the fatigue fracture surface, an attempt to explain the high-temperature fatigue deformation behavior of the materials was made.

  • Al-Si alloys have been steadily used as a potential material for the achievement of an efficient weight reduction in the automobile and aerospace industries due to its excellent castability and high strength-to-weight ratio. In this study, riser effect and mechanical properties were investigated according to the size of the sleeve. In addition, the effects of riser size on mechanical properties of castings were investigated. On the other hand flow and solidification process were simulated with a hybrid FDM/FEM package named ZCast. As a result, results of simulation and experiments were comparable regarding to the yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and hardness of casting. It proves the reliability of the simulation. It is expected that the proper size of riser can improve the recycling rate of metallic materials and reduce the cost of casting.

  • The carbocyclic nucleosides have extensively studied as a promising antiviral agents having chemical and metabolical stability. In our research program for discovery of antiviral drugs. some novel dimethylcyclopropyl nucleosides possessing additional methyl spacer between purine bases and the ring was synthesized. The important intermediate, dimethylcyclopropyl alcohol was synthesized from ethyl chrysanthemate via its ozonolysis, isomerization reduction. (omitted)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the Family System Diagnosis Scale and to examine its reliability and validity. The subscales of the questionnaire included scores on seven constructs. In order to define constructs accurately, a careful review of Minuchin's writings, the writings of other family therapists, and relevant articles on family interaction was undertaken. A pool of 150 items was given to eight family counselors along with a description of Minuchin' s concepts. The counselors were asked to choose the category each statement fit and to rate the degree of fit using the 3-point scale. Using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and Linear Structural Relationship(LISREL), six subdimensions of individuation and 55 items of FSDS were identified; enmeshmen disengagement(16 items), parent coalition generational coalition(6 items), flexibility rigidity(5 items), spouse conflict resolved unresolved(8 items), mother-child cohesion estrangement(10 items), father-child cohesion estrangement(10 items). 356 adolescents(ages 13∼18), 356 fathers, 356 mothers in Seoul, Busan, Dague, Incheun, Dajeun, Ulsan, and Kwangju were completed the Family System Diagnosis Scale(FSDS). The reliability of the scale was calculated by Cronbach's a Coefficient and the total a = .94 and the calculation for each factor was .87, .60, .77, .80 and .79 respectively.

  • The rheocasting characteristics are strongly influenced by the microstructural morphology such as particle size, form factor and contiguity. In this study, the effect of structural morphology on fluid flow characteristics of A356 semi-solid alloy was investigated with a vacuum suction fluidity test. Semi-solid metal slurry was made by the mechanical stirring, the liquidus casting, and H-NCM to be analysed. H-NCM could obtain uniform and fine globular microstructures of 0.9 form factor and 55 ${\mu}m$ particle size. Inoculation was found to be effective for reducing particle size, however, for H-NCM it should be avoided due to the cause of increasing contiguity. The fluidity test indicated that the non-stirring method had higher fluidity and smaller liquid segregation in the same solid faction of 0.4 than the stirring method, for smaller particle size and higher form factor. It was observed that liquid segregation decreased as the particle size is smaller and form factor is higher. The results of die-casting experiment were a good agreement with those of fluidity test.

  • Recently, automotive industry is attempting to replace steels for automotive parts with light-weight alloys such as aluminum alloy, because of the growing environmental regulations governing exhaust gas and the engine effectiveness of a vehicle. The low cycle fatigue (LCF) and high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties as well as the microstructure and tensile property were investigated on the low pressure cast A356 aluminum alloy wheel, which was followed by T6 heat treatment. The cast microstructure of the alloy influenced significantly on the low cycle and high cycle fatigue behaviors. The rim part of cast aluminum alloy wheel showed higher low cycle and high cycle fatigue strength compared with the spoke part, which should be caused by higher cooling rate of rim part. The spoke part of the wheel showed coarser dendrite arm spacing (DAS) and wide eutectic zone in the microstructure, which resulted in the partial brittle fracture and lower fatigue life time.

  • Microstructure of A356 aluminium alloys cast in a permanent mold was investigated by optical microscope and image analyzer, with particular respect to the shape and size distribution of iron intermetallics known as ${\beta}-phase$ ($Al_5FeSi$). Morphologies of the ${\beta}-phase$ was found to change gradually with the Be:Fe ratio like these. In Be-free alloys, ${\beta}-phase$ with needlelike morphology was well developed, but script phase was appeared when the Be:Fe ratio is above 0.2:1. With the Be:Fe ratios of 0.4:1-1:1, script phase as well as Be-rich phase was also observed. In case of higher Be addition, above 1:1, Be-rich phase was observed on all regions of the specimens, and increasing of the Be:Fe ratios gradually make the Be-rich phase coarse. It was also observed that the ${\beta}-phase$ with needlelike morphology was coarsened with increase of the Fe content in Be-free alloys. However, in Be-added alloys, length and number of these ${\beta}-phases$ were considerably decreased with the increased Be:Fe ratio. It was concluded that Fe impurity element to be crystallized into needlelike intermetallics was tied up by Be addition element, and new phases were crystallized into script or Be-rich intermetallics.
