  • In the present study, a new simple first-order shear deformation theory is presented for laminated composite plates. Moreover, the number of unknowns of this theory is the least one comparing with the traditional first-order and the other higher-order shear deformation theories. Equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions of simply supported antisymmetric cross-ply and angle-ply laminates are obtained and the results are compared with the exact three-dimensional (3D) solutions and those predicted by existing theories. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the static bending and free vibration behaviors of laminated composite plates.

  • We have composed an experimental system using the superposition method to measure the nonlinearity of photodetectors for optical fiber power measurements. Also we have measured the nonlinearity of a high power detector and of a low power detector. The two detectors have shown good linearity within 0.01% and 0.02%, respectively, in the 50 ㏈ dynamic range. These detectors are used as reference detectors in optical fiber characteristics measurements.

  • Medical student examination questions of 60 years ago are very rare to find irrespective of medical specialty. Recently, medical student examination questions for thoracic and cardiovascular surgery were found, which were presented between 1957 and 1959 at Seoul National University Medical College. All examination questions were hand-written in six pages by a professor as examiner. Among the six pages, four examination papers were dated and/or the target grade was identified, while the remaining two did not offer any information. These materials are thought to have a valuable historical meaning for the Korean medical community as well as the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Seoul National University Hospital.

  • Long-term properties of concrete affect structures in many respects, not excepting dynamic behaviors. This paper investigates the influence of concrete creep on the dynamic behaviors of concrete filled steel tube (CFT) arch bridges, by means of combining the analytical method for the creep of axially compressed CFT members, which is based on Model B3 for concrete creep, with the finite element model of CFT arch bridges. By this approach, the changes of the stress and strain of each element in the bridge with time can be obtained and then transformed into damping and stiffness matrices in the dynamic equation involved in the finite element model at different times. A numerical example of a long-span half-through CFT arch bridge shows that creep influences the natural vibration characteristics and seismic responses of the bridge considerably, especially in the early age. In addition, parameter analysis demonstrates that concrete composition, compressive strength and steel ratio have an obvious effect on the seismic response of the CFT arch bridge.

  • GPS reception rate in the room has less features. To overcome these shortcomings, the AP positioning using RSS technology research and development is being done. If we use positioning technology and signal strength in order to detect a obstacles, it has the advantage of no-cost in terms of utilization and efficiency when we do this applied service. In this paper, We are presented method to determine the obstacles using RSS(Received Signal Strength).

  • A series of poly(hyroxyamide)s (PHAs) was prepared by direct polycondensation reaction of 4,4'-(2,3-pyridinedioxy)dibenzoic acid and/or isophthalic acid with 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine. The yield percentages of the products were high, and the inherent viscosities of the polymer in DMAc solution at 35℃ were 0.31-0.59 dL/g. All PHA polymers were found to be soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as DMAc, DMSO, NMP, and DMF. On the other hand, LiCl was required to dissolve IPHA-1 in aprotic solvents. Poly(benzoxazole)s (PBOs) were partially soluble in conc-H2SO4; IPBO-4, -5, and -6 were partially soluble in NMP only when LiCl was added to the solution, and the solution was heated. The PBO polymers showed a maximum weight loss in the temperature range of 654-680℃, and the char yields at 900℃ under nitrogen atmosphere exceeded 63%.

  • As an example of many possible applications of OSMI data, we present a method to detect red tides. In Korean waters, red tides usually occur in the South Sea where the turbidity is usually high due to strong tidal mixing in the shallow sea. The conventional case 1 chlorophyll algorithm cannot be applied since it cannot distinguish chlorophyll from SS (suspended sediments). In October 1998, a red tide outbreak occurred off the coast of KunSan. We analyzed the SeaWiFS data of the outbreak. The standard SeaWiFS chlorophyll algorithm OC-2 was poor in identifying the red tides. However, comparison of spectra of normalized water-leaving radiance indicates that red tide pixels can be distinguished from sediment-laden pixels. Channel 443 and 555 were effective in showing the spectral characteristics. We suggest K490 algorithm as an example in summarizing the information of the spectra and thereby in distinguishing the red tide pixels. Further development is desirable.

  • Adsorption mechanisms of diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (DIBDTPI) and diisobutyl monothiophosphinate (DIBMTPI) on gold and gold-silver alloys (80:20 and 50:50) have been studied. The adsorption mechanisms on gold-silver alloys can be explained by the EC mechanism involving an electron transfer step and a chemical reaction step. Thus, the adsorption should be controlled by the E of the electrochemical oxidation of the electrode involved and the pK of the metal collector complex. Both di- and mono- thiophosphinate adsorb on 50:50 Au-Ag alloy at lower potential than on 80:20 Au-Ag alloy surface. There are no significant differences between the reactivities of DIBDTPI and DIBMTPI with precious metals except that the dithio- compound can be oxidized to dimer on gold at high potentials, while the monothio- homologue cannot. In this regard, DIBDTPI may be a better surface active reagent for pure gold than DIBMTPI.

  • The purpose of this paper is to critique the links between science and scientific researchers, politics and capital surrounding vaccines and vaccination in a pandemic era. It also introduces standards for adapting ethical guidelines for research under public health emergencies to specific circumstances and contexts. It also introduces ethical standards to be applied to scientific research. that is, scientific relevance, social value, cooperative partnerships, reasonable risk-benefit costs, fair and voluntary participation, independent review, and equal moral respect for participants and affected communities. It also outlines the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic-consent and other research procedure modifications proposed by Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). We are on the lookout for powerful capital and hegemonic groups inseparable from politics and important decision makers in the pandemic era - that is, scientists, supporters, and scientific civic groups. It underscores the need for an independent and formal scientific advisory body with the right balance between science and politics.
