Fusarium oxysporum, F. moniliforme, F. solani, F. equiseti, F. semitectum, and F. sporotrichioides were detected from seeds, roots and cultivated soil of Phaseolous vidissimus collected from Kyung-gi Provincial Rural Development Administration. The rate of seedling desease incidence was $60\%$ by testing of seed germination using a large petri-dish. According to the blotter method, F. moniliforme showed $7\%$ infection at seed-coat and $2\%$ at cotyledon and embryo. Their pathogenicities of F. moniliforme, F. semitectum, F. equiseti, and F. sporotrichioides isolated from seeds were recognized on seedlings by water-agar test tube methods. F. oxysporum and F. solani isolated from infected-roots had their pathogenicity by water-agar test tube method but were weakly pathogenic by soil treatment method. Their pathogenicities of F. oxysporum. F. solani and F. uiseti isolated from cultivated-soil were recognized by water-agar test tube method. These F. oxysporum and equiseti isolates had their pathogenicities but F. solani was weakly pathogenic by soil treatment method.
Incidence of radish disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani ranged from 1 to 30% in fields located at Hwaseong, Naju and Yeoncheon in Korea during the growing seasons in 1989, 1990 ad 1993. A total of 133 isolates of R. solani was obtained from the diseased seedlings, leaves and roots of radish collected. The fungus was most commonly isolated from the roots. Among 133 isolates of R. solani, 56 isolates were classified as anastomosis group AG-1 by anastomosis test, 37 isolates as AG-2-1, and 40 isolates as AG-4. Among the isolates of AG-1, 26 isolates were grouped as cultural type IA, and the others as cultural type IB. Cultural types IA and IB of AG-1, were isolated from the leaves, AG-2-1 from the roots, and AG-4 from the seedlings, leaves and roots. Pathogenicity tests revealed that the AG-1(IA) isolates were highly virulent on leaves of radish, but avirulent on the seedlings, petioles and roots. The AG-1(IB) isolates were highly virulent on the leaves, but mildly virulent on the seedlings and avirulent or mildly virulent on the petioles and roots. The AG-2-1, isolates were mildly virulent on the leaves and seedlings and mildly or highly virulent on the petioles and roots. The AG-4 isolates were highly virulent on the seedlings and mildly or highly virulent on the leaves, petioles and roots.

Early blight of potato, caused by Alternaria solani, is a ubiquitous disease in many countries around the world. Our previous screening of several Iranian potato cultivars found that significant variation in resistance phenotypes exists between two cultivars: resistant 'Diamond' and susceptible 'Granula'. Our previous analysis of five different pathogen isolates also identified varying degrees of aggressiveness regardless of the host cultivar. Here, a bioassay was used to study the role of liquid culture exudates produced in vitro on pathogenicity and elicitation of disease symptomology in seedlings as well as detached leaves. Responses of host genotypes to the exudates of the two A. solani isolates were significantly different. Detached leaves of the resistant cultivar 'Diamond' elicited fewer symptoms to each isolate when compared to the susceptible cultivar 'Granula'. Interestingly, the phytotoxicity effect of the culture filtrate from the more aggressive isolate A was higher than from isolate N suggesting an increased concentration or strength of the toxins produced. Our results are significant because they indicate a correlation between symptoms elicited by A. solani phytotoxins and their aggressiveness on the host.
For the selection of powerful antagonistic bacterium for biological control of soilborne Fusarium solani causing root rot of many important crops, the best YPL-1 strain was selected among 300 strains of bacteria isolated from rhizosphere in ginseng root rot-suppressive soil. The strain was identified to be a species to Pseudomonas stutzeri. With in vitro fungal inhibition tests, antagonistic substance of P. stutzeri YPL-1 against F. solani was presumed to be heat unstable, macromolecular substances such as protein. Also, it was shown that antifungal activity of P. stutzeri YPL-1 increased in proportion to its chitinase production. P. stutzeri YPL-M122 (chi-, lam -) which was deprived of the productivity of chitinase and laminarinase by NTG mutagenesis had lost antifungal activity, completely. And P. stutzeri YPL-MI53 (chi-) had only 4.1% of its antifungal activity. P. stutzeri YPL-1 was not able to produce any extracellular siderophore in iron-deficent minimal medium. It is confident that the antifungal mechanism of P. stutzeri YPL-1 for biocontrol of F. solani depends on lysis rather than antibiosis :the mechanism of lysis appears to involve enzymatic degradation of the cell will components of F. solani by hydrolytic enzymes of more chitinase and less laminarinase.
In vitro and in vivo effectiveness of fungicides were evaluated for the control of damping off caused by Rhizoctonia solani on Panax ginseng. Fludioxonil(67 mg a. i./L), flutolanil(75 mg a. i./L), thifluzamide(35 mg a. i./L), and mepronil (750 mg a. i./L) were selected from 9 fungicides, which were based on inhibition of mycelial growth of R. solani (isolate Rh 9801) and duration of fungicidal effectiveness against the pathogen in vitro. Field trials were made twice in the year of 2003 and 2004. Experimental plots $(54m{\times}0.9m)$ of 4-year-old ginseng fields were artificially infested with 5kg and 14 kg in fresh weight of inoculum in 2003 and 2004, respectively. The fungicides were drenched at a volume of 8l in $3.6m{\times}0.9m$ with 3 replications. Fludioxonil, flutolanil, thifluzamide and mepronil reduced the incidence of damping off by $73\%,\;69\%,\;69\%\;and\;43\%$, respectively. In the 2004 trial, fludioxonil, flutolanil, and thifluzamide showed similar result as reducing the incidence by $85\%,\;84\%,\;and\;82\%$, respectively, in the plot where the inoculum was applied 2.8 times more than the 2003. The disease incidences in untreated control were $12\%$ in 2003 and $47\%$ in 2004.
Cultural characteristics and pathogenicity on the isolates of Rhizoctonia oryzae, R. oryzae-sativae and anastomosis group of R. solani and evaluation of selected fungicides on brown patch disease of creeping bentgrass and large patch disease of zoysia grass were studied comparatively. From effect of temperature on the rate of mycelia growth, the result indicated that the temperature groups were separated into four types : isolates of R. oryzae and R. oryzae-sativae had an optimum temperature of $30~35^{\circ}C$. Anastomosis groups of R. solani were separated into three temperature types as followings : high temperature type had an optimum temperature from 25 to $30^{\circ}C$, moderate type had grown from 20 to $25^{\circ}C$ for optimum and low temperature type had an optimum temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ but at $35^{\circ}C$ did not grow. Inoculation tests showed that AG-1( I A), AG-1( I B), bentgrass isolate of R. solani and R. oryzae were strongly pathogenic on creeping bentgrass, followed by AG-2-1, AG-4, AG-5 and AG-2-2 isolates of R. solani moderately to weakly. Zoysia grass isolate of R. solani and R. oryzae were strongly pathogenic on zoysia grass but AG-1( I B) and AG-5 isolates of R. solani showed moderately pathogenic. Capro(iprodione oxine-copper) and mytan(myclobutanil) were extremely effective against brown patch disease of creeping bentgrass and large patch disease of zoysia grass followed by thiopan (thiopanate-methyl) and pencycuron for brown patch disease and tolos(tolclofos-methyl) and thiopan for large patch disease.

Biocontrol potential of an isolate of Helicosporium spp. against Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporium and Phytophthora drechsleri was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. A selected biocontrol agent designated as Helicosporium 0635BP strongly inhibited growth and lysed mycelium of Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporium on PDA. Autoclaved culture filtrate of the agent also completely inhibited growth of the turfgrass large patch pathogen, R. solani AG2-2 IV at the concentration of 50 ml $L^{-1}$. The pathogen was killed when dipped under the 20% filtrate for four hours or 50% for one hr. In a field trial, plots applied with the crude or times diluted culture filtrate showed 100% control efficacy of the turfgrass large patch as a chemical applied for a comparison. Results indicated that Helicosporium 0635BP is a promising biocontrol agent on control of the turfgrass large patch disease and its culture filtrate contained unknown heat suitable antifungal substance (s). Further studies on mass production, purification and identification of the unknown compound (s) are in progress for practical use.

Gray leaf spot of tomato was observed on tomato plants growing in a middle of a pepper field where pepper plants were badly infected with gray leaf spot. Both Stemphylium solani and S. lycopersici were isolated from the lesion. Both species were highly pathogenic on tomato and pepper. This is the first report in Korea of occurrence of gray leaf spot of tomato caused by Stemphylium solani Weber.
Pseudomonas fluorescens Biovar III strains S-2 antagonistic to Rhizoctonia solani was subjected to Tn5 mutagenesis by the transposon vector pGS9. Ampicillin and kanamycin resistant (Ampr, Kmr) transconjugants were recovered at a frequency of 1.3$\times$10-7 per initial recipient cell, when recipient cells were washed twice in TE buffer before conjugation. Of the ca. 3000 transconjugants, a frequency of noninhibitory (Inh-), nonfluorescent (Flu-) and auxotorphic (Pro-) mutants were 0.27%, 0.47% and 0.40%, respectively. In these mutants, all Inh- mutants showed the same colony morphology as wild type, whereas all Flu- and Pro- mutants inhibited the growth of R. solani. These mutants were also susceptible to chloramphenicol, indicating only the Tn5 element, except for parts of pGS9, was integrated into the recipient genome. In a Southern blot analysis, the Tn5 element inserted into one site on the chromosome for each of the chosen mutants. However, Tn5 insertion sites of Inh-, and Pro- mutants were differed in each other. These indicate that the genes essential for R. solani inhibition, fluorescent production and auxotrophic are chromosomally located, but not linked to each other.
Cnidium officinale is a perennial herb belonging to the family Umbelliferae. Its origin is China and is also distributed in Korea and Japan. In 2017, a phenomenon of browning and wilting of leaves was discovered in the cultivation field of the National Institute of Forest Science, Suwon, Korea. The pathogens isolated from plants were consistent with Fusarium solani as a result of morphological examination and molecular phylogenetic analysis. This is the first record of F. solani on C. officinale in Korea.
