  • Let M be a compact orientable closed 3-manifold, and F a non-separating incompressible closed surface in M. Let M' = M - ${\eta}(F)$, where ${\eta}(F)$ is an open regular neighborhood of F in M. In the paper, we give a lower bound of genus of self-amalgamation of minimal Heegaard splitting $V'\;{\cup}_{S'}\;W'$ of M' under some conditions on the distance of the Heegaard splitting.

  • The family Trogossitidae Latreille occurs worldwide, including some Pacific islands. The family contains about 50 genera and 600 described species, and the group was recently classified by Kolibáč into three subfamilies, Lophocaterinae, Peltinae and Trogossitinae. Among the lophocaterine genera, a genus Ancyrona Reitter includes 62 species in most parts of the world except the Nearctic region, and is divided into five informal species groups by Kolibáč. In this study, the genus Ancyrona and its a single species, A. diversa (Pic), is newly reported in the Korean fauna. A diagnosis, habitus photographs, and illustrations of female diagnostic characters are provided, with a key to Palaearctic species of the genus Ancyrona.

  • Cavernocypris reddelli n. sp. is a new species of the genus Cavernocypris collected from spring waters of Texas, U.S.A.. This is the sixth species of the genus described so far. It can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by the shape and length of carapace, presence of robust marginal pore canals on right valve, number and length of setae on second antenna, shape of hemipenis, numbers of whorls on the Zenker organ, and differences in other parts of chaetotaxy. The new species was compared with other species and a new taxonomic key for the genus is presented for future studies.

  • The family Ameiridae Boeck, 1865 (Copepoda; Harpacticoida) consists of about 380 species in 47 genera, but only 10 species have been reported in Korea. A benthic ameirid species was collected from the East Sea of Korea. Specimens were identified as members of the genus Ameiropsis Sars G.O., 1907, and this is the first record of the genus Ameiropsis in the Pacific Ocean. Ameiropsis gyeongjuensis sp. nov. is morphologically similar to A. mixta Sars G.O., 1907 and A. longicornis Sars G.O., 1907 from Norway. However, the new species is clearly distinguishable from the others based on the following morphological characteristics: the proximal segment of antennary exopod with a bulge in the middle, and with one pinnate seta; the distal segment of antennary exopod with a thickened, blade-shaped outer seta; and female P5 baseoendopod with five setae and exopod with six setae. An identification key to species is provided for the 11 valid species of the genus Ameiropsis.

  • Four species of the genus Exochus belonging to the subfamily Metopiinae, family Ichneumonidae, are reported in South Korea for the first time. The subfamily Metopiinae was recorded by Förster in 1869 based on genus Metopius and more than 870 described species have been reported worldwide. Among the genera of Metopiinae, genus Exochus is the largest, which is cosmopolitan and comprises more than 290 described species worldwide (Choi et al., 2016; Yu et al., 2016). A taxonomic study of South Korean Exochus was initiated by Choi et al. (2014), who reported four species. Until now, 10 species have been described as new species and 25 species were recorded as new records of this genus from South Korea (Choi et al., 2014, 2016). In the present study, the following four species are reported in South Korea: Exochus latiareolus Tolkanitz, 2003, E. ornatus Momoi & Kusigemati, 1970, E. pictus Holmgren, 1858, and E. yasumatsui Momoi, Kusigemati & Nakanishi, 1968. In addition, we provide the diagnoses of these four species along with diagnostic photographs.

  • The family Gracillariidae, belonging to the superfamily Gracillarioidea, is one of the major group of leaf-miners. Among them, the genus Telamoptilia Kumata & Kuroko, 1988 has been known as a small genus with only nine described species over worldwide to date. In this study, the genus Telamoptilia Kumata & Kuroko, 1988, is reported for the first time from Korea. In addition, two species of the genus Telamoptilia, T. grewiae Liu, Wang & Li, 2015 and T. tiliae Kumata & Ermolaev, 1988, are newly recorded in Korea. All the known species are enumerated with their available information. The adults and genitalia of all species are redescribed and illustrated.

  • The genus Eumetriochroa Kumata & Kuroko, 1988 has been known as a small genus with twelve described species worldwide. In this study, we aimed to review the Korean species of the genus Eumetriochroa of the subfamily Oecophyllembiinae, which belongs to the family Gracillariidae. Three species of this genus are recognized from Korea. Among them, two species, Eumetriochroa araliella Kobayashi, Huang & Hirowatari, 2013 and E. hiranoi Kumata, 1998 are reported for the first time from Korea. All the known species were enumerated with their available information and briefly redescribed for the newly recorded species. The adults and genitalia of all the species are redescribed and illustrated.

  • A marine algal species was collected from the southern coast of Korea. This alga is characterized by a large and cartilaginous thallus, a dichotomous branching pattern, compressed axes, rare proliferations near the apex, and cystocarps protruded toward surface. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, this species nests in the same clade as Neodilsea yendoana as a terminal clade of the genus Neodilsea. The genetic distance between both sequences within the clade was calculated as 0.2% considered to be in the intraspecific range within the genus. Based on the morphological and molecular data obtained in the present study, this Korean species is identified as N. yendoana. This is the first record of the genus Neodilsea and N. yendoana in Korea.

  • In this study, the phylogenetic relationships among the genera Alsidium C. Agardh and Bryothamnion $K{\ddot{u}}tzing$ were investigated. Phylogenetic analyses using the plastid-encoded markers rbcL, psbA, and the mitochondrial barcode region (COI-5P) resolved a well-supported clade that included the species Alsidium corallinum, Bryothamnion seaforthii, and B. triquetrum. Our results indicated that taxonomic recognition of the genus Bryothamnion is not supported and two species of Bryothamnion are reallocated to Alsidium. A reexamination of the morphological definition of Alsidium is provided with an updated diagnosis of the genus and a morphology-based comparison of species that are currently circumscribed under this generic name. Furthermore, we reviewed morphological differences and similarities between Alsidium and the genus Digenea, both belonging to the tribe Alsidieae, discussing the most relevant morphological characters.
