  • In this study, we have developed a prediction model for expansion and contraction behaviors of expansion joint in Gwangan Bridge using machine learning techniques and bridge monitoring data. In the development of the prediction model, two famous machine learning techniques, multiple regression analysis (MRA) and artificial neural network (ANN), were employed. Structural monitoring data obtained from bridge monitoring system of Gwangan Bridge were used to train and validate the developed models. From the results, it was found that the expansion and contraction behaviors predicted by the developed models are matched well with actual expansion and contraction behaviors of Gwangan Bridge. Therefore, it can be concluded that both MRA and ANN models can be used to predict the expansion and contraction behaviors of Gwangan Bridge without actual measurements of those behaviors.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect intentional contraction of abdominal muscles during lifting above shoulder on the muscles activities of the lower trunk and on the degree of lumbar extension. Fifteen healthy adult males were selected as test subjects. A 5kg weight was raised to the shoulder level, 20cm, and 40cm above the shoulder level. EMG activities of all muscles except the rectus abdominis were significantly greater when subjects were asked to contract their abdominal muscles intentionally during lifting(p<0.05). Degree of lumbar extension also significantly decreased with intentional abdominal contraction during the lifting. Also, degree of lumbar extension significantly increased with increase in lifting height(p<0.05). The results of this study show that intentional contraction of abdominal muscles during lifting above shoulder increases the EMG activities of external abdominis oblique, internal abdominis oblique, and erector spinae.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the difference in biomechanical variation and pattern of the lower limb between planned and unexpected termination, which is related to the prevention of fatal fall in the elderly. Therefore, selected twenty subjects for each group which composed of females(age: $73.5{\pm}4.63$ year, height: $153.2{\pm}6.46$ cm, body mass: $58.98{\pm}5.82$ kg) and women(age: $23.4{\pm}2.5$ year, height: $164.65{\pm}3.9$ cm, body mass: $58.47{\pm}5.53$ kg) in their twenties. As a result, lower limb's extension moment and power were increased significantly in statistics(p<.05). Also, knee joint power showed instant changes from concentric contraction to eccentric contraction and hip joint power from eccentric contraction to concentric contraction. During unexpected termination there were dramatical increase in eccentric contraction and power(p<.05). In both planned and unexpected termination, ankle joint moment were higher in young group, but the moment of the hip joint were higher in the elderly group(p<.05). In contrast to younger group, there were no changes in knee extension moment in elderly group(p<.05). but showed relatively higher hip joint extension moment and power(p<.05).

  • It has been known that activation of tyrosine kinases is involved in signal transduction. Role of the tyrosine kinase in vascular smooth muscle contraction was examined in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent uninephrectomy, one week after which they were subcutaneously implanted with DOCA (200 mg/kg) and supplied with 1% NaCl and 0.2% KCl drinking water for $4{\sim}6$ weeks. Control rats were treated the same except for that no DOCA was implanted. Helical strips of carotid arteries were mounted in organ baths for measurement of isometric force development. Genistein was used as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Concentration-response curves to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) shifted to the right by genistein in both DOCA-salt hypertensive and control rats. Although the sensitivity to genistein was similar between the two groups, the maximum force generation by 5-HT was less inhibited by genistein in arteries from DOCA-salt hypertensive rats than in those from controls. Genistein-induced relaxations were attenuated in arteries from DOCA-salt rats. Genistein affected the contraction to phorbol 12, 13-dibutyrate (PDBu) neither in DOCA-salt nor in control arteries. These observations suggest that tyrosine kinase is involved in 5-HT-induced vascular contraction, of which role is reduced in DOCA-salt hypertension.

  • Gallstone diseases appear frequently in surgical patients. One of the etiolic factors in the formation of cholesterol gallstones is the supersaturation of bile with cholesterol. The bile stasis in the gallbladder may also play a role in the formation of cholesterol gallstones by supplying the proper condition to nucleation of cholesterol crystal. Author evaluated gallbladder empting in response to fat meal by ultrasonography in 12 patients with gallstones and normal control group of 12 healthy subjects. Of the 12 patients with gallstones, six had radiolucent stones and the rest of them had radioopaque stones. Additionally, author evaluated gallbladder contraction in both cholesterol gallstones and pigment gallstones. The gallbladder was significantly contracted in control group by the fat meal but not by water. The contraction of gallbladder by fat meal with gallstone patients was significantly decreased compared with those in control group. The time of maximum contraction was 30 minutes in patients with gallstones. At 30 minutes, the gallbladder contraction was more significantly decreased in patients with radiolucent stones than in those with radioopaque stones. In conclusion, the more significant decrease of gallbladder contraction in patients with radiolucent stones may be interpretated as the possible factor of pathologenesis for the formation of the cholesterol stone.

  • To characterize non-adrenergic non-cholinergic(NANC) nerve mediated contractile responses in circular smooth muscle of bovine reticular groove, we investigated NANC relaxation and contraction induced by electric field stimulation to enteric nerves. In the presence of atropine($1{\mu}M$) and guanethidine($50{\mu}M$), electric field stimulation at frequency of 1 to 16Hz(square pulses, 0.5ms duration, 70V) evoked clear-cut relaxations through stimulations. Transient 'rebound contraction' was occured when the stimulus was switched off. All of the responses (relaxation and rebound contraction) were dose-dependently blocked by Nw-nitro-$_{\small{L}}$-arginine methyl ester(L-NAME), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis, and methylene blue, and inhibitor of soluble guanylate cyclase. Tetraethyl ammonium(TEA), a potassium channel blocker, did not block the NANC relaxations.

  • Ponciri Fructus (PF), the immature fruit of Poncirus trifoliata, has been used for treatment of constipation in Korean traditional medicine. It has been reported that PF has a prokinetic effect on gastrointestinal tract, but little is known about the effect on colonic contraction. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of PF on spontaneous contractions of proximal and distal colon in rats. The aqueous extract of PF was centrifuged and filtered and its supernatant was used for in vitro motility study. The removed colon from rats was divided into proximal and distal segments. Each segment was mounted in a 10 ml organ bath and measured the change of the spontaneous contraction with increasing dose (1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, $1000{\mu}g/ml$) of PF extract administration. Also the effect of PF on the spontaneous contraction was measured under treatment of atropine, acetylcholine (Ach), and tetrodotoxin (TTX). PF increased the spontaneous phasic contraction of distal colon dose dependently, but there was no change in proximal colon. The contractile response induced by PF in distal colon was lower than that of Ach and was partially blocked by atropine ($10^{-6}M$). TTX increased the spontaneous contraction and it was reinforced with Ach addition. But the extract of PF had no or little contractile effect of TTX in colon. PF increased spontaneous contractions selectively in distal colon. The prokinetic effect of PF may be due to enhancement of cholinergic related excitatory neural system.

  • An investigation made of the easing contraction ratio according to sewing conditions (eased seam angle; 0$^{\circ}$ 20$^{\circ}$ 30$^{\circ}$ 45$^{\circ}$ 60$^{\circ}$ 70$^{\circ}$ 90$^{\circ}$, stitch density; 38 stitches/3 cm(N1.0), 26 stitches/ 3 cm(N1.5), 19 stitches/3 cm(N2.0), 14 stitches/3 cm(N2.5), 12 stitches/3 cm(N3.0), thread; sp 60' s/2) by lockstitch industrial sewing machine with shirring foot. The results abstained were as follows: 1. The lower the stitch density , the higher the easing contraction ratio. 2. The easing contraction ratio at 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ were lower than bias angles (20$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$, 70$^{\circ}$). 3. As the results of visual test, the maximum easing conditions were Fl -0$^{\circ}$.20$^{\circ}$.30$^{\circ}$.45$^{\circ}$-12 stitches/3 cm(N3.0), 60$^{\circ}$. 70$^{\circ}$. 90$^{\circ}$-14 stitches/3 cm(N2.5), F2 -0$^{\circ}$. 20$^{\circ}$.30$^{\circ}$.60$^{\circ}$.70$^{\circ}$.90$^{\circ}$-19 stitches/ 3 cm(N2.0), 45$^{\circ}$ -14 stitches/3 cm(N2.5), and F3 -0$^{\circ}$.20$^{\circ}$.30$^{\circ}$.45$^{\circ}$.60$^{\circ}$.70$^{\circ}$.90$^{\circ}$-19 stitches/3 cm (N2.0). 4. Approximately easing contraction ratio was obtained as 2.0% (N1.0)~ 10.2% (N3.0) in F1, 6.7% (N1.0)~ 15.7% (N2.0) in F2, and 5.2% (N1.0)~ 12.1% (N2.0) in F3, according to different angles on the sleeve cap curve line. 5. As a resets of SPSS PC) statistics analysis, it confirmed the relations which were observed between easing contration ratio and stitch density, and easing contraction ratio was correlated with bending properties.

  • In our previous study, we found that spermine and putrescine inhibited spontaneous and acetylcholine (ACh)-induced contractions of guinea-pig stomach via inhibition of L-type voltage- dependent calcium current ($VDCC_L$). In this study, we also studied the effect of spermidine on mechanical contractions and calcium channel current ($I_{Ba}$), and then compared its effects to those by spermine and putrescine. Spermidine inhibited spontaneous contraction of the gastric smooth muscle in a concentration-dependent manner ($IC_{50}=1.1{\pm}0.11mM$). Relationship between inhibition of contraction and calcium current by spermidine was studied using 50 mM high $K^+$-induced contraction: Spermidine (5 mM) significantly reduced high $K^+$ (50 mM)-induced contraction to 37${\pm}$4.7% of the control (p<0.05), and inhibitory effect of spermidine on $I_{Ba}$ was also observed at a wide range of test potential in current/voltage (I/V) relationship. Pre- and post-application of spermidine (5 mM) also significantly inhibited carbachol (CCh) and ACh-induced initial and phasic contractions. Finally, caffeine (10 mM)-induced contraction which is activated by $Ca^{2+}$-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release (CICR), was also inhibited by pretreatment of spermidine (5 mM). These findings suggest that spermidine inhibits spontaneous and CCh-induced contraction via inhibition of $VDCC_L$ and $Ca^{2+}$ releasing mechanism in guinea-pig stomach.
