This paper presents a simple and reliable one-touch type multi-immunosensing lab-on-a-chip (LOC) detecting antibodies as multi-disease markers using electrochemical method suitable for a portable point-of-care system (POCS). The multi-stacked LOC consists of a PDMS space layer for liquids loading, a PDMS valve layer with 50 im in height for the membrane, a PDMS channel layer for the fluid paths, and a glass layer for multi electrodes. For the disposable immunoassay which needs sequential flow control of sample and buffer liquids according to the designed strategies, reliable and easy-controlled on-chip operation mechanisms without any electric power are necessary. The driving forces of sequential liquids transfer are the capillary attraction force and the pneumatic pressure generated by air bladder push. These passive fluid transport mechanisms are suitable for single-use LOC module. Prior to the application of detection of the antibody as a disease marker, the model experiments were performed with anti-DNP antibody and anti-biotin antibody as target analytes. The flow test results demonstrate that we can control the fluid flow easily by using the capillary stop valve and the PDMS check valves. By the model tests, we confirmed that the proposed LOC is easily applicable to the bioanalytic immunosensors using bioelectrocatalysis.
Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations were determined for $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{1.0}$ aerosols particles collected at Gosan Superstation on Jeju Island from August 2007 to September 2008. Aerosols were collected on quartz filters for 24 hours and then OC and EC were analyzed by TOR/IMPROVED method. Mean concentrations of OC and EC were $4.66\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $1.69\;{\mu}g/m^3$ for $PM_{10}$, $3.95\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $1.69\;{\mu}g/m^3$ for $PM_{2.5}$, and $3.16\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $1.42\;{\mu}g/m^3$ for $PM_{1.0}$, respectively. The concentrations of OC and EC comprised 16.4% and 6.0% of $PM_{10}$, 22.9% and 9.8% of $PM_{2.5}$, and 23.0% and 10.0% of $PM_{1.0}$. OC and EC showed a clear seasonal variation with the highest in winter and the lowest in summer. The correlations between the two were also the best during the winter ($R^2$=0.87, 0.94, and 0.95 for $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{1.0}$). The ratio of OC/EC exhibited the maximum (7.24) during an Asian dust event due to an increase of OC, which was possibly derived from soil. The mass fraction of both OC and EC was the highest in fall. When OC and EC concentrations were highly elevated, EC1 (the first EC fraction determined at $550^{\circ}C$) and pyrolyzed OC (POC) were dominant subcomponents in winter and OC3 (the third OC fraction determined at $450^{\circ}C$) and POC in spring.
In order to prevent water pollution caused by organic matter, Total Organic Carbon(TOC) has been adopted indicator and monitored. TOC can be divided into Dissolved Organic Carbon(DOC) and Particulate Organic Carbon(POC). POC is largely precipitated and removed during stream flow, which making DOC environmentally significant. However, there are lack of studies to define spatio-temporal distributions of DOC in stream affected by various land use. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the past DOC concentration using other water quality indicators to evaluate status of watershed management. In this study, DOC was estimated by correlation and regression analysis using three different organic matter indicators monitored in mixed land-use watersheds. The results of correlation analysis showed that DOC has the highest correlation with TOC. Based on the results of the correlation analysis, the single- and multiple-regression models were developed using Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD), and TOC. The results of the prediction accuracy for three different regression models showed that the single-regression model with TOC was better than those of the other multiple-regression models. The trend analysis using extended average concentration DOC data shows that DOC tends to decrease reflecting watershed management. This study could contribute to assessment and management of organic water pollution in mixed land-use watershed by suggesting methods for assessment of unmeasured DOC concentration.
As wireless and mobile technologies have advanced significantly, lots of large sized healthcare organizations have implemented so called mobile hospital (m-Hospital) which provides a location independent and point of care (POC) clinical environment. Implementation of m-Hospital enhances quality of care because health professionals such as physicians and nurses can use hospital information systems at the very place where patients are located without any delay. This paper presents a real-time patient monitoring system based on wireless network technologies. A general framework for the patient monitoring process is introduced and the architecture and components of the proposed monitoring system is described. The system collects and analyzes biometric signals of in-patients who suffer from cancer. Specifically, it continuously monitors oxygen saturation of patients in bed and alarms health professionals instantly when an abnormal status of the patient is detected. The monitoring system has been used and clinically verified in a university hospital.
For proper wound healing, dermal contraction and remodeling are critical; during the natural healing process, differentiated fibroblasts called "myofibroblasts" typically undertake these functions. For severe wounds, however, a critical mass of dermal matrix and fibroblasts are lost, making self-regeneration impossible. To overcome this impairment, synthetic wound patches with embedded functional cells can be used to promote healing. In this study, we developed a polydioxanone (PDO)-based cell-embedded sheet on which dermal fibroblasts were cultured and induced for differentiation into myofibroblasts, whereby the following combinatorial physicochemical stimuli were also applied: aligned topology, electric field (EF), and growth factor. The results show that both the aligned topology and EF synergistically enhanced the expression of alpha smooth-muscle actin (${\alpha}$-SMA), a key myofibroblast marker. Our proof-of-concept (POC) experiments demonstrated the potential applicability of a myofibroblast-embedded PDO sheet as a wound patch.
In the summer of 2008 (August 4-14), vertical and horizontal distributions of inorganic nutrients and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured in the southwestern East Sea. Concentrations of DOC were determined for the first time in the southwestern East Sea using the high-temperature combustion oxidation (HTCO) method, and results were compared with those measured by another laboratory. Concentrations of DOC ranged from 58 to 104 ${\mu}M$ in the upper 200 m, showing a typical decreasing pattern with depth. Generally, concentrations of DOC were relatively lower, with higher nutrient concentrations, in the upper layer of the coastal upwelling zone. Concentrations of DOC ranged from 54 to 64 ${\mu}M$ in the deep Ulleung Basin (200-1500 m), and were higher than those in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. In association with rapid vertical ventilation of the euphotic, this difference indicates a larger accumulation of semi-labile DOC in the deep East Sea than in the major oceans. A correlation between apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) and DOC in the deep ocean of the East Sea revealed that only a small portion (<10%) of the sinking DOC, relative to the sinking particulate organic carbon (POC), contributes to microbial degradation. Our results present an important data set of DOC in the East Sea, which plays a critical role in carbon cycle modeling and sequestration.
In this paper. Ive propose a postprocessing technique based on the theory of projection on convex sets(POCS) to reduce the blocking artifacts in HDTV decoded images. In BDCT of HDTV. the image is divided into a grid of non-overlapped 8 ${\times}$ 8 blocks. and then each block is coded separately. A block which is located one pixel apart from the grid of BDCT will include the boundary of the original 8 ${\times}$ 8 block. If the blocking artifact is Introduced alone the block boundary. this block will have different frequency characteristic from that of the original block. Thus, a comparison of frequency characteristics of these two overlapping blocks can detect the undesired high-frequency components mainly caused by the blocking artifact. By eliminating these undesired high-frequency components adaptively, robust smoothing projection operator can be obtained. Simulation results with real image sequences indicate that the proposed method performs better than conventional algorithms.
