동물원에서 사육중인 줄무늬하이에나에서 사후 확인된 공장염전 증례 (Postmortem Identification of Jejunal Volvulus in a Captive Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena))

  • Jejunal volvulus was diagnosed in a captive 12-year-old male striped hyena at necropsy. The animal was presented with decreased appetite, dullness, vomiting, and mild abdominal distention intermittently for about two months. Then, the animal was found anorexia, lethargy, depression, red brown colored vomiting materials, and decreased defecation from 10 days before death. At necropsy, jejunal volvulus was found about 1 m in length, and coalescence was observed at the inner membranes of jejunum. The parenchyma of the kidney was congested, and the bladder was filled with hematuria. These conditions might cause shock by renal failure that led to death. To prevent volvulus in a captive striped hyena, it is needed to improve zoo environment and early diagnosis using ultrasonography and X-ray.

Cockroach as a Vector of Blastocystis sp. is Risk for Golden Monkeys in Zoo

  • Blastocystis sp. is a kind of protozoa living in the intestinal tract of human and animals, which will cause intestinal diseases such as diarrhea, abdominal distension and vomiting. This paper was aimed to understand the infection of Blastocystis sp. In golden monkeys and the transmission path in North China. Thirty-seven feces samples from golden monkeys and 116 cockroach samples from Shijiazhuang Zoo were collected from July to October 2019 for PCR analysis of Blastocystis sp. Genetic diversity analysis was further conducted on the samples with positive PCR results. The results showed that the infection rate was 48.7% (18/37) in golden monkeys and 82.8% (96/116) in cockroaches, respectively. The genetic evolution analysis based on small subunit ribosomal RNA demonstrated that three subtypes (ST) of Blastocystis sp. including ST1, ST2, and ST3 existed in the intestinal tract of golden monkeys, while only ST2 was detected in the intestinal tract of cockroaches. This paper may provide supports for the quarantine and control of Blastocystis sp. for the zoo in Northern China.

Gizzard impaction and duodenal perforation in a yellow-billed spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia)

  • A yellow-billed spoonbill kept at the zoo was found dead. As a result of the necropsy, the stomach (gizzard and proventriculus) and duodenum were full of undigested fish bones, and the undigested sharp fish bones were lodged in the gastric mucosa and clumped together, blocking the lumen. Thereafter, the intestinal wall was perforated and peritonitis occurred causing death. The cause of the fish spines becoming lodged in the gastrointestinal tract is unknown. It can only be assumed that there was a lack of a mechanism for the yellow-billed spoonbill in a zoo to go around and pick up grit or small stones and assist in mechanical crushing in the gizzard.

국내 사육중인 쿠바홍학에서 Aspergillus fumigatus 감염증례 (Aspergillus Fumigatus Infection in a Captive Carribean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus Ruber))

  • Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) is one of the most important mycotic infection in wild animals stressed by captivity and concurrent disease. A 14-year-old Carribean flamingo controlled bumble foot with antibiotics died after having dyspnea, depression, and anorexia. Necropsy findings revealed pyogranulomatous inflammations of lung and greenish gray-colored mold on air sacs. A carribean flamingo was diagnosed as pyogranulomatous pneumoniae due to A.fumigatus infection by results of lung tissue culture and microscopic examination.

동물원 사자의 Clostridium perfringens에 의한 장독혈증 감염증례 (Clostridium perfringens enterotoxicosis in a lion of zoo)

  • A 3-year-old male lion at Gwangju Uchi Zoo presented for acute onset of haemorrhagic diarrhea and died. The lion showed reddening of the anus as the cause of haemorrhagic enteritis. Necropsy revealed a severe haemorrhagic colitis. Grossly, lesions included icterus, excess pericardial fluid. dark kidneys, and an enlarged, friable liver. The intestines were flaccid, thin-walled, dilated, and 9as-filled. The spleen was enlarged and pulpy because of congestion. Most of organs were rapidly postmortem autolysis. Histopathologically, the intestines were edema and transient leukocyte infiltration of the lamina propria, followed by necrosis. Especially of the intestinal submucosa was edematous, haemorrhagic, or filled with leukocytes. The crypts remained intact or dilated. C perfringens was isolated from a lion at bloody feces, and identified C perfringens type A, confirming the presence of C perfringens $\alpha-toxin$ by PCR. These results were suggested that the case were diagnosed as enterotoxicosis in the lion. More studies are needed on lion enterotoxemia. especially of its etiopathogenesis, in order to develop more efficient prevention for this disease.

Aerobic bacteria from oral cavities and cloaca of snakes in a petting zoo

  • It is important to identify the bacteria in snakes because they can cause disease; importantly, bacteria such as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris etc. could be pathogens especially in hospitalized, debilitated hosts, and immunocompromised patients. To analyze the distribution of snakes' bacteria in petting zoo, samples from 20 snakes were collected from 2002 to 2008. Nine bacteria species were isolated from both oral and cloaca while four and six species were identified only from oral and cloaca, respectively. Except for Actinobacter sp., all of the identified strains are opportunistic pathogens, and most of them can cause nosocomial infections in humans. Present results indicate that prevalence of various zoonotic bacterial strains in snakes could be involved in potential transfer of these bacteria into caretakers and other animals. Therefore, it needs to examine the antibiotic resistance of these pathogens to prevent outbreaks.

Medetomidine과 Ketamine을 사용한 그물무늬 기린마취에 대한 고찰 (Chemical Immobilization of Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) Using Medetomidine and Ketamine)

  • The chemical immobilization in giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) remains a challenge because of their size, behavior, and anatomic and physiologic characteristics that commonly create life threatening problems during immobilization. The drug combination medetomidine (MED) and ketamine (KET) was administered by remote injection. The dosages of MED and KET were correlated to the giraffe's shoulder height (SH), become recumbent with a dosage of $114{\mu}g$ of MED and 2.1 mg of KET, $320{\mu}g$ of atipamezole per cm of SH, respectively. After injection of the drugs, initial signs of sedation including ataxia were noticed at 3 minutes followed by lateral recombency at 12 minutes. The mean heart rate, respiratory rate and rectal temperature recorded during the procedures were 55 beats per minute, 48 breaths per minute and $36.6^{\circ}C$, respectively. Atipamezole was administered, after 33 minutes result in death. Assuming that 24 hours fasting times were short and light esteemed of atipamzole adverse effects like vomiting, passive regurgitation.

동물원 새끼 사자의 Trichophyton mentagrophytes 감염과 사육사에 전파된 원형피부백선 증례 (Trichophyton mentagrophytes infection in an African lion cub (Panthera leo) and transmission to a zookeeper)

  • Dermatophytosis was found on the right front leg of a 4-month-old female African lion cub (Panthera leo) kept at a zoo with locally marginal alopecia. For diagnosis, culturing on sabouraud dextrose agar was performed and skin scrapings from the lesion were analyzed. The ones from the culture and skin scrapings were identified as Trichophyton mentagrophytes. A zookeeper that had been in contacted with the lion for artificial rearing developed skin lesions with well-defined erythematous plaques on the right arm about 1 month after the lesion in the lion was observed. The ringworm was probably transmitted from the lion through continuous contact.

어린이 그림책을 위한 주제명표 개발 연구: 『A to Zoo』를 바탕으로 (Developing Subject Headings for Children's Picture Books based on A to Zoo)

  • 주제명은 이용자가 어린이 그림책을 효과적으로 접근하도록 지원한다. 그러나 어린이 그림책은 다른 자료에 비해 표제나 목차와 같이 자료 자체에서 주제명을 선정하기가 어렵다. 또한 텍스트 외에 그림이 주는 정보량이 큰 편이다. 따라서 그림책의 주제접근을 위해서는 별도의 주제명 목록을 작성할 필요가 있다. 그런데 어린이 그림책에 일반 도서용으로 개발된 주제명을 그대로 사용하기는 적절하지 않을 수 있다. 주제명의 유형과 수준이 상이할 수 있기 때문이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 어린이 그림책에 적합한 주제명표를 개발하고자 하였다. 기본 주제명의 선정을 위해서는 영미권에서 발행된 그림책 주제명표를 참고하였는데, 이 과정에서 우리 문화와 언어에 맞도록 기존의 표목을 수정 추가하였다. 또한 그림책의 주요 독자층인 어린이에게 적합한 표목을 선정하기 위해 초등국어사전과 같은 참고자료도 활용하였다. 그리고 시범적으로 구축된 주제명표를 어린이 그림책을 대상으로 한 권장도서 목록에 적용하여, 주제검색이나 브라우징, 도서 추천 등에 활용하는 방안을 제시하였다.

  • 멸종 위기에 처한 침팬지에서 연중번식주기와 무월경, 번식주기, 임신진단을 포함한 번식형태를 관찰하기 위하여 형광항체 분석법을 사용하여 에스트라디올, 프로게스테론, 테스토스테론 호르몬 대사산물과 인간융모성 성선자극호르몬을 측정하였다. 본 연구결과, 침팬지의 번식능력은 연령이 번식에 중요한 영향을 주는 인자가 아니며, 개체별 번식능력의 차이, 산과질환의 유무, 배우자와 합사한 조건에서 나타나는 성적행동의 차이 같은 여러 가지 요인이 복합적으로 작용한다는 것을 알 수가 있었다. 본 연구는 침팬지의 종보전과 인간과 연관된 폐경과 산과질환을 연구하는데도 유용하게 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
