TEACHING APPLIED MATHEMATICS FOR ENGINEERS - A NEW TEACHING PARADIGM BASED ON INDUSTRIAL MATHEMATICS

  • What is the "new paradigm"? It is impossible express it in one or two words, but if one had to; the closest might be the "holistic approach". The expression can be justified by the fact that the conclusions above lead to a greater intermixing of mathematics with engineering and natural sciences subjects, typically expressed in the form of examples of simplified real problems. They also lead to a greater intermixing of subjects within mathematics so that the courses should have less separation e.g. between symbolic and numerical mathematics. The conclusions also lead to the spreading the mathematics courses throughout all study years, not just the first two years. Of course, this should be done with great care in order to guarantee studies that are logically linked together. The new paradigm also means that the needs arising from industrial mathematics must be taken into account in the contents of engineering mathematics courses. Such topics are e.g. multivariate methods, statistics and use of mathematical software. What are we expected to gain from the paradigm shift? The primary benefit should be in obtaining more productive engineers equipped with a better degree of mathematical preparedness for engineering problems. But in addition, it should also promote more intensive use of applied mathematics and easier communication with professional mathematicians, often needed in complicated industrial problems.?Finally, it can be noted that the new paradigm is in harmony with the basic ideas of the CDIO (Conceive - Design - Implement - Operate) initiative for producing the next generation of engineers [1]. 사회환경교육의 새로운 패러다임 모색: 심층생태론의 관점에서 (Towards a Paradigm Shift in Social Environmental Education: From the Deep Ecological Perspective)

  • The main goal of this paper is to suggest a new path to new ecological paradigm in social environmental education. The old paradigm of environmental education consists of two elements. The first element is emphasis on the seriousness and urgency of environmental problems while the second one is the presentation of concrete action programs as solutions of environmental problems. The missing point of this paradigm is the internal process of meaning construction of actors. Any kind of social action must be based on the meaning which the actors gives to their own action. Becoming an environmentally conscious actor, therefore, actor himself needs to interpret the world from the new perspective. In this paper, we call the change of worldview in the deepest sense 'conversion'. Ecological conversion means shift from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism. In the following sections, main characteristics of ecological world view are specified and some examples of ecological confessions which reveal ecological world view are presented. In this last section, 7 ways of lifestyle change which can facilitate ecological conversion are suggested: 1) trying to be alone for a while everyday; 2) making peaceful state of mind; 3) sharpening the 'green sensitivity'; 4) creating slow way of life; 5) choosing voluntary simplicity; 6)raising spirituality; 7) practicing sharing and caring. Social environmental education in the new ecological paradigm could be considered as a starting point towards a civilizational shift from the dominant materialist civilization to the post-material ecological civilization.

  • The development of Science and Technology and the social change require new paradigm in Education. In a traditional paradigm, learners have been regarded as a passive being and knowledge could be transmitted to learner. But within this paradigm, it is difficult to confront the social change and to develop problem solving skills in various context. This results in a new, alternative perspective, Constructive paradigm. As an alternative to the traditional settings, Constructive paradigm emphasizes the learner centered instruction. The reform movement in mathematics education including NCTM's standards revolves around this paradigm and the open education movement in our educational system is based on it. Open education values learner's interest, autonomy and internal motivation in learning. However, open education has been misunderstood by most of the teachers. It should be understood as the change of paradigm. In this study, as a way of helping students connect mathematics to their everyday lives and construct meaningful mathematical knowledge and concept, mathematical modelling is suggested. It consists of posing and specifying the real problem, formulation and constructing a mathematical model, analyzing and solving a mathematical problem. interpreting the solution and comparing with reality and communicating results. In this process, technology like computer can be a powerful tool. It can help students explore various problems more easily and concretely.

  • 오늘날 디지털 미디어 환경은 개인화, 상호작용, 키네시스로 특정 지어진 새로운 디지털 미디어 패러다임으로 전환되고 있다. 이러한 변화에 따라 도시 환경에서 중요한 역할을 수행하는 미디어 스킨에도 변화가 요구되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 디지털 미디어 패러다임 전환에 따라 새로운 개념의 사용자 참여형 미디어 스킨 모듈을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구를 위해 생물학적 패러다임에 대한 이론적 고찰을 통해 개인화, 상호작용, 키네시스로 대표되는 새로운 디지털 미디어 패러다임의 특성으로부터 주요 세부 요소를 도출했다. 도출된 요소를 기반으로 미디어 스킨의 한계점을 파악하고, 이를 극복할 수 있는 새로운 디지털 미디어 패러다임 기반의 미디어 스킨을 제안했다. 본 연구에서 제안하는 미디어 스킨은 모듈 조합형 미디어 스킨으로 사용자가 쉽고 빠르게 다양한 형태의 미디어 스킨을 직접 조형할 수 있고, 지능화된 모듈 간의 상호작용을 통해 다양한 콘텐츠를 창출할 수 있다. 본 연구는 향후 미디어 스킨 개발을 위한 지침으로 공헌할 것으로 기대된다.

미디어 컨버전스 시대 애니메이션의 새로운 패러다임 변화 (New Paradigm Changes in Animation in the Era of Media Convergence)

  • 최근 애니메이션 시장은 시대적 트렌드와 환경을 충족시켜 줄 수 있는 새로운 소비 형태의 애니메이션 콘텐츠를 요구하고 있다. 본 연구는 미디어 컨버전스 시대의 애니메이션 장르가 어떠한 형태로 변화하고 있는지에 대해 알아보고 미디어의 다양성에 따른 애니메이션 사례들을 분석함으로써 애니메이션의 새로운 패러다임 변화를 모색해 보는 것이 주목적이다. 연구결과, 애니메이션의 패러다임 변화를 이끄는 핵심적인 변화 요인으로, 인터넷 통신기술의 발달과 상호작용성, 미디어 특성에 따른 뉴미디어의 등장을 확인할 수 있었다. 시사점으로, 다원화 사회의 소비환경은 개인미디어를 중심으로 한 적극적인 마케팅 도입이 필요하고, 애니메이션 장르에 대한 새로운 인식이 필요하다는 점이다. 또한 애니메이션 산업은 창작기술 발달과 체험 경제적 패러다임을 바탕으로 미래의 선도 산업으로 발전 가능성이 크다는 것과 뉴미디어를 기반으로 한 애니메이션 교육이 필요하다는 점이다. 이러한 연구는 뉴미디어를 중심으로 한 창작 애니메이션의 이론적 실무적 측면에서 연구의 기초를 제공할 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

글로벌경쟁력 관점의 IT서비스산업정책 연구 (A Study on IT Service Industry Policy for Global Competitiveness)

  • An efficient industry structure is essential for competitive IT Service industry in a global world. The purpose of this research is to derive a policy direction paradigm for strengthening IT service industry structure. To find an effective policy direction, an in-depth analysis on deep-rooted problems of IT service industry has been conducted. The root-causes of industry problems are found with new perspectives on IT service industry. Past and present policies on IT service industry have been reviewed based on desirable industry behavior. A new policy paradigm and a roadmap for efficient industry policy are suggested. To justify adequacy of new policy direction, global benchmarking has been performed. USA, Germany, and Japan's IT service industry has been reviewed based on global competitiveness and desirable eco-system. And an in-depth analysis has been performed for two big competitors, India and China, The adequacy of the new policy paradigm has been tested, and mostly approved. IT service industry policy needs to be transformed from manufacturing concepts to service concepts, from domestic focus to global focus, from zero-sum policy to positive-sum policy, from supplier focus to market focus, from internal industry itself to co-growth with main industries. etc. The results of this study can be used for policy adjusting and policy making to strengthen IT service industry's global competitiveness and to improve long-term performance of Korean economy. Further in-depth researches with quantitative analysis will be needed to fully justify the adequacy of the derived new policy directions.

통합 물관리를 위한 우리나라 지하수 관리 패러다임 전환과 정책방향 (Groundwater Management Pradigm Shift and Policy Directions for Integrated Water Management in Korea)

  • This paper aims to develop a new paradigm for groundwater management which is compatible with integrated water management policies in Korea. Three key roles of groundwater are defined for addressing water cycle distortion, high water stress, water quality degradation, aquatic ecosystems deterioration, and water-related hazards. Firstly, groundwater plays an important role in contributing soundness of water cycle as a component of water cycle. Secondly, it is a local water resource to ensure water supply sustainability. Thirdly, groundwater is an essential water resource for drought and emergencies. In order to support the groundwater roles, we propose a paradigm shift for groundwater management and policy directions towards integrated water management. The new paradigm consists of managements for sound water cycle on a watershed scale and groundwater environment(quantity, quality, and groundwater dependent ecosystems) managements for both human and nature. A prospective management also constitutes the new paradigm. In addition, this paper proposes four policy directions in groundwater management. The policies emphasize the integrated management of groundwater and surface water, management of groundwater environment(quantity, quality, and groundwater dependent ecosystems), management of groundwater uses for water sustainability and security, and enhancement of groundwater publicity.

신산학협력 패러다임 관점에서 본 창업대학원 사업의 실태조사 연구;전국 5개 창업대학원 사례 연구를 중심으로 (A Study on the Actual Condition of Graduate School of Entrepreneurial Management viewed from New Educational-Industrial Cooperation Paradigm;The Case Study of 5 Government Supported Graduate Schools of Entrepreneurial Management)

  • 본 연구에서는 신(新)산학협력 패러다임에서 출발한 창업대학원 사업의 실태를 조사하여 자생력을 증진시키기 위한 방안으로 창업대학원 교육프로그램 개발의 역할모형을 제시하고자 하였다. 5개 창업대학원 설문조사에 의하면, 창업대학원은 창업교육프로그램 결정과정에서 수요자 중심의 창업교육 활성화 요인들이 종합적으로 고려되지 않는 경향을 보였다. 이것은 창업교육기관이 프로그램 개발과 과정에서 수요자(학습자, 지역사회, 기관)의 요구를 분석하고 목표를 설정하는 등 일련의 절차가 전문적이고 체계적으로 이루어지지 못하고 있음을 보여주는 것이다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 창업대학원에서 신산학협력 패러다임의 중요성을 전달하고 창업교육프로그램을 개발함에 있어 신신학협력 패러다임의 주요 원칙을 적용토록 유도하여 지속적인 생존과 발전이 가능하도록 한다. 그리고 유관기관에 대한 역할 모형을 제시하여 창업교육프로그램 개발에 있어 상생의 협력이 가능한 유관기관을 선정할 수 있도록 기준과 역할모형을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 창업대학원 사업의 실태를 조사하여 창업교육프로그램 개발 모델들이 신산학협력의 패러다임과 부합되는지 검증하고자 하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 크게 두 가지의 접근을 시도하였다. 첫째, 본 연구는 이론적 검토를 통해 신산학협력 패러다임의 주요 원칙들을 도출하고 창업교육에 효과적인 적용방법을 고찰하였다. 둘째, 5개 창업대학원의 교육프로그램 개발 성과를 측정하기 위해 주요 원칙이 얼마나 잘 지켜지고 있는가를 확인하였다.

사회자본 패러다임과 사회·감성재화에 관한 소고 (A Thought on Social Captial Paradigm and Social-Emotional Goods)

  • The main purpose of this study is to explore a social capital paradigm which can be applied to many forms of social capital and intangible goods. The social capital paradigm introduces a new form of capital. This new form of capital produces a flow of socio-emotional goods that have value. Moreover, these socio-emotional goods can attach themselves to the objects used to convey them and change their value and meaning. This change in value and meaning is defined as attachment values. Exchanges of socio-emotional goods occur in networks where social capital resides. Formal and informal institutions provide order and meaning to exchanges of tangible and intangible goods. Social capital is a powerful resource that makes our choices interdependent. The social capital paradigm does not alter or contradict the basic economic theories of exchange. While the social capital paradigm accepts that selfish preferences motive many actions, it adds that sympathy and the desire to consume socio-emotional goods are powerful motivators. In case of marine affairs, ocean and fishing villages and their culture have been not only a fundamental basis of fisheries development but they also have made a great deal of contribution to forming social capital. In spite of this fact, the main reason that the problems of fisheries fishing villages fishermen in our society are kept at a distance is because they have been loosing their capability of forming social capital and producing socio-emotional goods, in addition to lowered relative economic share.

한방 안이비인후과학 수업에 적용한 새로운 패러다임의 교수법 (New Paradigm Teaching Method on the Oriental Medical Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology Class)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to survey the needs of Oriental Medical students about the existing teaching methods and to investigate satisfaction of new teaching & learning method on the Oriental medical Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology Class. Methods : 1. The needs of Oriental medicine whole students(475 persons) were surveyed with questioning paper. 2. Oriental medical Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology were studied by new paradigm teaching method with 116 students(3rd grade, school of Oriental medicine). 3. The satisfaction of school lesson of Oriental medicine 3rd grade students(106 persons) were surveyed with questioning paper before & after applying new paradigm teaching method. Results : 1. 43% students did not know well the purpose of lessons. 2. 46.7% students answered the curriculum has a large quantity. Conclusions : 1. Students want to study with various teaching & learning methods on school lessons. 2. 72.6% students were replied the problem based learning is effective to make a diagnosis and treatment of patients in the future. 3. 58.5% students take a part positively in the conduct of Team based learning study. 4. Team based learning was effective to the interaction with professor and students.
