Background : The eosinophil chemotactic and activating effects of eotaxin and the known association of eosinophils with asthma suggest that eotaxin expression is increased during an asthma attack. This study was aimed to determine whether the plasma eotaxin levels are higher in patients during an asthma attack and to correlate the eotaxin levels with the disease activity, severity and response to therapy. Method : A case-control study of the plasma eotaxin levels was performed in 100 patients with exacerbated asthma and 48 age- and sex-matched subjects with stable asthma. Results : The plasma eotaxin levels were significantly higher in the 100 patients with exacerbated asthma($233{\pm}175\;pg/mL$) than in the 48 subjects with stable asthma($169{\pm}74\;pg/mL$). A trend toward higher eotaxin levels was observed in asthmatic subjects who were taking oral steroids ($332{\pm}225\;pg/mL$) than in those who were not ($214{\pm}159\;pg/mL$) and higher levels were found in those admitted to the hospital ($275{\pm}212\;pg/mL$) than in those discharged after receiving only emergency treatment ($190{\pm}115\;pg/mL$). The eotaxin levels inversely correlated with the $FEV_$ (r=-0.25, p<0.01). The eotaxin levels were higher in moderate persistent ($323{\pm}256\;pg/mL$) and severe persistent asthmatics ($276{\pm}170\;pg/mL$) than in mild intermittent asthmatics ($l60{\pm}60\;pg/mL$). Conclusion : Eotaxin expression is directly associated with asthma exacerbation, impaired pulmonary function and the disease severity.
Design and Implementation of Clipcast Service via Terrestrial DMB This paper outlines the system design and the implementation process of clipcast service that can send clips of video, mp3, text, images, etc. to terrestrial DMB terminals. To provide clipcast service in terrestrial DMB, a separate data channel needs to be allocated and this requires changes in the existing bandwidth allocation. Clipcast contents can be sent after midnight at around 3 to 4 AM, when terrestrial DMB viewship is low. If the video service bit rate is lowered to 352 Kbps and the TPEG service band is fully used, then 320 Kbps bit rate can be allocated to clipcast. To enable clipcast service, the terminals' DMB program must be executed, and this can be done through SMS and EPG. Clipcast service applies MOT protocol to transmit multimedia objects, and transmits twice in carousel format for stable transmission of files. Therefore, 72Mbyte data can be transmitted in one hour, which corresponds to about 20 minutes of full motion video service at 500Kbps data rate. When running the clip transmitted through terrestrial DMB data channel, information regarding the length of each clip is received through communication with the CMS(Content Management Server), then error-free files are displayed. The clips can be provided to the users as preview contents of the complete VOD contents. In order to use the complete content, the user needs to access the URL allocated for that specific content and download the content by completing a billing process. This paper suggests the design and implementation of terrestrial DMB system to provide clipcast service, which enables file download services as provided in MediaFLO, DVB-H, and the other mobile broadcasting systems. Unlike the other mobile broadcasting systems, the proposed system applies more reliable SMS method to activate the DMB terminals for highly stable clipcast service. This allows hybrid, i.e, both SMS and EPG activations of terminals for clipcast services.

Purpose : Febrile convulsions are classified into simple or complex types, the latter being characterized by increased risk of recurrence and progression to epilepsy. This study aimed to delineate the clinical characteristics of complex febrile convulsions. Methods : Between January 2003 and December 2006, 550 children were diagnosed with febrile convulsions at the Department of Pediatrics, Ilsan Paik Hospital. Their medical records were retrospectively reviewed for comparison between simple and complex febrile convulsions, and clinical findings of complex febrile convulsions were clarified. Results : Our subjects comprised a male-to-female ratio of 1.64:1; the age range was from 8 months to 8 years. Simple febrile convulsions comprised 432 cases, i.e., 4 times as many as complex febrile convulsions (118 cases). The causes of febrile illness included acute pharyngotonsillitis (357 cases, 64.9%), pneumonia (55 cases, 10.0%), acute gastroenteritis (37 cases, 6.7%), and otitis media (20 cases, 3.6%). We did not find any significant difference between simple and complex febrile convulsions in most clinical parameters such as gender, age, family history of febrile convulsions, and cause of febrile illness. Regarding subtypes of complex febrile convulsions, repeated convulsions were the most frequent (72.0%), followed by prolonged convulsions (16.9%) and focal convulsions (5.1%). Conclusion : We have reported here the clinical features of complex febrile convulsions. Although the results did not show any significant difference between simple and complex febrile convulsions in most clinical parameters such as gender, age, family history of febrile convulsion, and cause of febrile illness, further studies are essential to delineate complex febrile convulsions.
A feeding trial was conducted to study the effects of dietary supplement of fermented clay mineral (FCM) on the growth performance and immune stimulation in broiler chickens. A total of 36,800 broilers, (of) Ross strain-208, were randomly allotted into 2 experimental (diet) groups. Control group was fed the basal diet (corn-soybean meal based), and treatment group was fed the natural clay mineral that was fermented with aboriginal microorganisms at $37^{\circ}C$ for 72 h. Feed and water were provided ad libitum throughout the experiment for 5 weeks of experimental feeding period. Daily weight gain of treatment group fed 0.3% fermented clay mineral was significantly increased in comparison with control group. Feed intake of treatment group was significantly increased 21.4% (p<0.05), and feed efficiency was also increased 2.7% compared to control group. Especially, growth rate and production index of treatment group were significantly higher as much as 4.4% and 4.8%, respectively, than those of control group (p<0.05). By the feeding of dietary 0.3 % FCM, the antibody productions against Newcastle Disease and Infectious Bursal Disease antigens were shown to increase 13.8 % and 15.7 %, respectively, more than control group chickens. From these results, it appears that the supply of fermented clay mineral at 0.3 % level in the broiler chicken diet could enhance the growth performance and immune stimulation of broiler chickens.
The water quality of the Pyeongtaek Reservoir and its main streams has been eval uated far water pollution state in March, June, September and December,2000. The following are the findings: $NH_4$ accounts for the majority of TN in the inflow streams. In the reservoir, TN and $NH_4$ are the more present in the winter season and less in the summer season, with $1.6{\sim}2.4$ times of $NO_3$ and $5.3{\sim}11.4$ times of $NO_2$ found in December and June compared with other seasons. The concentration of each component is different between streams: $NH_4$ among inorganic nitrogen has the highest concentration in the upstream, and $NO_3$ is more prevalent in the downstream. SRP accounts for $25{\sim}69%$ of TP in the stream. Unlike N component, P component in the reservoir rapidly decreases from upstream toward downstream, except in the summer. Average SRSi slightly increases in the fall, i.e., immediately after rainfall. In the streams, the average concentration of chlorophyll-a ranges from 9 to $33{\mu}g/l$, and is relatively high in the downstream. In contrast, in the reservoir, it is the highest in the upstream where $NH_4$ and SRP are frequently found. In particular, diatom and cryptomonad algae are bloomed in March, and blue-green algae in September; their maximum values are $108{\mu}g/l$ and $130{\mu}g/l$, respectively. Black tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) is known to have more ${\beta}-carotene$, lycopene, and vitamin C than general red-colored tomatoes. In this study, we evaluated the quality properties, antioxidant activities and sensory characteristics of black tomato cookies. Cookies were prepared by replacing 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7% of flour with black tomato powder. Density of black tomato cookies tended to be decreased between control (1.20) and 3% added groups (1.12). pH value was decreased from control (6.66) to 7% added group (5.16). Spread factor and loss rate were increased with increasing amounts of black tomato powder. Hardness was gradually increased from $107.77g/cm^2$ in control to $170.50g/cm^2$ in 7% added group. Color measurement indicated that L-value (brightness) was highest in control (70.46) and lowest in 7% added group (45.23); whereas, a-value (redness) increased while b-value (yellowness) tended to decrease with increasing amounts of black tomato powder. Total polyphenol contents and DPPH radical scavenging activities were directly proportional to the amount of black tomato powder. Consumer preference scores in color and flavor of black tomato powder added group were higher than those of control. Characteristic strength test was not significantly different among the groups. Overall, the results indicated that adding 5% black tomato powder is desirable for making black tomato cookies.
Changes of growth and histopathological feature in the mantle structure of the equilateral venus, Gomphina veneriformis exposed to tribultyltin chloride (TBTCl) for 36 weeks were observed. Concentrations of TBTCl were 0, 0.4, 0.6, and $0.8{\mu}g/L$. A regression analysis by power function of SPSS was shown that the growth of experimental groups was significantly decreased after 12 weeks of exposure. For histological analysis, mantle tissues were characterized using H-E stain, AB-PAS (pH 2.5) reaction and Masson's trichrome stain, and epidermal layer thickness and mucous cell distribution were analysed using the image analyser. The mantle had 4-folds (inner-inner, inner-outer, middle, and outer) and its epidermal layer consisted of simple epithlia. A periostracum was observed in the periostracal groove between middle and outer fold. Inner epidermal layer consisted of simple ciliated columnar epithelia, but the outer epidermal layer consisted of simple non-ciliated columnar epithelia. Alcian blue positive mucous cells showed blue color (7462c, 653c) in the inner fold, violet color (2583c) in the middle fold, and blue color (647c, 7455c) in inner epidermal layer (numbers in the parenthesis are codes of Pantone process coated color). Hemolymph sinus in the mantle was extended, and mucous cells in inner plica of the middle fold were stained as blue (7455c) and violet (2587c), after 12 weeks of TBTCI exposure. Cilia and striated border were disappeared, and number of mucous cells in the inner epidermal layer was reduced. Serious histopathological changes in middle and outer fold near the periostracum were observed after 36 weeks. Moreover, epidermal layer thickness and mucous cell distribution were showed decreasing tendency as exposure time to TBTCI was increased. Results of this study suggested that TBTCl induced growth disorder with histopathological changes.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a highly prevalent, age-related disorder in men which place a considerable burden on health care resources worldwide. While BPH and hypertension are apparently diverse disease processes, they have some features in common(e.g. underlying etiology of the sympathetic nervous system). The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms using I-PSS(international prostate symptom score) and to investigate the association of hypertension with I-PSS. This study was carried out to 390 men(40~86 year old) at 3 Myun in Chungju City from July to August, 1997. Subjects answered on questionnaire for I-PSS and were checked age, education, marital status, annual income, blood pressure. The mean age of subjects was 59.8 year old. The mean of I-PSS were increased by age decades(40~49, 50~59, 60~69, 70~86) and it's scores were 4.4, 7.0, 8.2, 12.3 respectively. Strong correlations were observed between the I-PSS and the QUL(quality of life)(P=0.0001). I-PSS(mean-value) were 7.85 in hypertensive group and 8.39 in normotensive group but there was no statistically significance between the two groups(P>0.05). The proportion of mean scoring greater than 8 was 42.5%. There have been reports of association between lower urinary tract symptoms and hypertension, but there was no consistent suggestion that such an association could be casual. The need for high-quality epidemiological information and consequent increased prospects for prevention is obvious.
The Larch was known unsuitable species for the wood cement board owing to its some inhibitory substances. Therefore this research was carried out to evaluate the effect of pretreatments and chemical additives on the properties of woodflake cement board from Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis) grown in Korea. In order to improve the board qualities, the woodflakes were treated by cold water or dilute NaOH solutions(0.1, 0.5, and 2.0%), and also some chemicals($CaCl_2$, $Al_2Cl_3$ and $Na_2SiO_4$) added to the wood cement mixture. The results obtained are summarized as follow; 1. The wood cement boards from the woodflake treated with 0.1% NaOH showed remarkable higher bending strengths and internal bonding strengths than those from the flake pretreated with cold water. 2. The bending strengths showed over $60kg/cm^2$, i.e. the standard strength of JIS A-5417, with pretreatments of NaOH over 0.1% and additive of $CaCl_2$ 3.0%. The maximum strengths showed at about 0.5 of every additives. 3. Addition of $CaCl_2$ and $Al_2Cl_3$, in the case of pretreated wood with NaOH above 0.1%, had effects on increasing the internal bonding strengths of sample boards. 4. The thickness swellings became decreasing along with the increasing NaOH pretreatment concentntration. 5. The equilibrium conditions of the sample boards pretreated with NaOH over 0.1% and added with $Al_2Cl_3$ and $CaCl_2$ were maintained at 9.0~10.5% moisture contents. 6. The specific gravity of the samples showed close relationships with strength properties.
In this study, the anti-inflammatory activities of the extracts of different parts of Hovenia dulcis such as leaves, stems, and roots were investigated. Among them, the roots extract (RE) showed the most potent suppressive effect against pro-inflammatory mediators in LPS-stimulated mouse macrophage cells. RE induced dose-dependent reduction of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and concomitantly reduced the production of NO and $PGE_2$. Additionally, pre-treatment with RE significantly suppressed the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$), interleukin $(IL)-1{\beta}$, and IL-6, as well as mRNA levels. Moreover, phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) were also strongly attenuated by RE in RAW264.7 cell. Furthermore, RE induced HO-1 expression through nuclear translocation of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and increase HO-1 activity in RAW264.7 macrophages. Therefore, these results indicate that RE strongly inhibits LPS-induced inflammatory responses by blocking NF-kB activation, inhibiting MAPKs phosphorylation, and enhancing HO-1 expression in macrophages, suggesting that RE of H. dulicis and a major component, 27-O-protocatechuoylbetulinic acid could be applied as a valuable natural anti-inflammatory material.
