To those who spend most time within a room, comfortable indoor environment is a very critical element to job performance and health. The comfort technology, which is for enhancing comfort in human living, relates with various factors to ensure human activities efficient, comfortable, safe and satisfactory. Experiments were performed in environmental chamber. Experimental conditions were combinations from three temperatures of 18, 22 and 26C, and two relative humidity levels of 45 and 60%. Air-flow was controlled to 0.1m/s through the experiment. Four male and four female university students participated in the experiments. They had normal blood pressure and their body temperature was under $37^{\circ}C$. From the experiments for evaluating thermal sensation to the air-heating conditions, relationships among TSV, CSV, $SET^*$, PMV were analyzed. Results can be summarized as followings; Thermal neutrality $SET^*$ of man and female was $24.8^{\circ}C$. In air-heating condition, $SET^*$ values for thermal comfort zone were $23.0{\sim}26.5^{\circ}C$. These values were higher than the values from ASHRAE.

In this study, performance of 2 pure hydrocarbons R290 and R1270 was measured in an attempt to substitute R22 under 3 different temperature conditions. They were tested in a refrigerating bench tester with a hermetic rotary compressor. The test bench provided about 3.5 kW capacity and water and water/glycol mixture were employed as the secondary heat transfer fluids. All tests were conducted under the same external conditions resulting in the average saturation temperatures of $7/45^{\circ}C$ and $-7/41^{\circ}C$ and $-21/28^{\circ}C$ in the evaporator and condenser, respectively. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of these refrigerants is up to 11.54% higher than that of R22 in all temperature conditions. Compressor discharge temperatures were reduced by $14{\sim}31^{\circ}C$ with these fluids. There was no problem with mineral oil since the mixtures were mainly composed of hydrocarbons. The amount of charge was reduced up to 58% as compared to R22. Overall, these fluids provide good performance with reasonable energy savings without any environmental problem and thus can be used as long term alternatives for residential air-conditioning and heat pumping application.

The thermal performance of cooling towers is affected by the temperature of inlet water, wet bulb temperature of entering air add water-air flow rate. In this study, the effects of these variables are simulated using NTU-method and experimentally investigated for the counter-flow cooling towers. The simulation program to evaluate these variables which affect the performance of cooling tower was developed. The maximum errors between the results of simulations and experiments were 3.8% under the standard design conditions and 5.4% under the other conditions. The performance was increased up to 46~50% as the water loading was increased from $6.8m^3$/$hr\cdot m^2$ to $15.9m^3$/$hr\cdot m^2$. The range was reduced up to 56~42% when the wet bulb temperature of the entering air was increased from $22^{\circ}C\; to\; 29^{\circ}C.$

The present study has been conducted to develope a heating system for a green house with heat from underground air at Jeju Island. The temperature of the air deposited in the underground is $16{\sim}18^{\circ}C$ throughout the year, and it also has a large amount of moisture. Therefore, the air could not directly used for the heating of a green house. In this study, a heat pump with dehumidification function has been developed, which consisted of three evaporators, where the moisture removal occurs, accompanied by temperature drop. The dropped temperature is recovered, while passing through a series condenser. The air temperature increased from $17^{\circ}C$ to 35 with a 2.1 kg/h of moisture removal rate. The developed system moisture removal performance shows 0.91 kg/kWh.

Lubricant oil is needed in air conditioning and refrigeration system because the compressor requires oil to prevent surface to surface contact between its moving parts, to remove heat, to provide sealing, to keep out contaminants, to prevent corrosion, and to dispose of debris created by wear. Thus, the oil separation in an oil separator is one of the most important characteristics for proper compressor operation. In this study, a gravity type of oil separator is used. Oil separation characteristics have been investigated for $CO_2$/PAG mixture in the range of oil concentration 0 to 5 weight-percent and the mixture temperature range of $0^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$ at 50 bar and $70^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$ at 80 bar. The results obtained indicate that the oil separation is increased with an increase in the oil concentration. It is also found that the oil separation in liquid state is increased with an increase in the mixture temperature while the oil separation in gas state is decreased.

In this paper, experimental investigation of capillary tube performance for R-407C is performed. The experimental setup is made of real vapor-compression refrigerating system. In this study, mass flow rate is measured for capillary tubes of various diameter and length as inlet pressure and degree of subcooling are changed. These data are compared with the results of a numerical model. The mass flow rates of the numerical model are less than by 14% compared with the measured mass flow rates. It is found that mass flow rate and length for R-407c are less than those of R-22 under the same condition. Also based on this experimental study and the numerical model, a set of capillary tube selection charts for R-407C is constructed.

The objective of the present study is to reveal the effects of a phase-change material on the performance of a Kimchi refrigerator. Two-percent salt water, of which melting temperature was $-1.1^{\circ}C$, was used for the phase-change material. The salt water was packed in silicon cases and inserted between Kimchi container and the copper pipe of the evaporator. The maximum and minimum temperatures of the inner wall of the Kimchi container without salt-water pack were $-0.2^{\circ}C$ and $-8.9^{\circ}C$, which were remarkably improved by using the salt-water packs, resulting $-0.5^{\circ}C$ and$ -1.9^{\circ}C$. This shows a useful application of using phase-change materials for accurate temperature controls.
To reduce vehicle fuel consumption due to not only driving but also air conditioning, battery-operated non-starting conditioning systems with thermoelectric modules and without mechanical elements like compressors are being manufactured for use by hybrid heavy trucks in the near future. In this study, the voltage and current consumed by a thermoelectric module were measured to determine the required battery power, and the performance of the conditioning system with air temperature, and humidity of the inlet/outlet modules and inside/outside the cabin for a truck, was evaluated using experimental apparatus under actual conditions. The results showed that, the thermoelectric module can be continously operated for about 1.5 h using existing 24 V batteries. The coefficent of performance(COP) of the cooling and heating modes was calculated to be an average 0.8-1.32. As expected, the heating performance was 30% more efficient than the cooling performance, which is general characteristic of thermoelectric modules.

This paper is about the performance of alternative refrigerants for low temperature and transport refrigeration chillers. A breadboard refrigeration chiller was constructed with counterflow heat exchangers. R502, its transitional alternatives of R402A and R402B, and long-term alternatives of R404A and R507 were tested in an attempt to compare the performance of each refrigerant against R502. Measurements were conducted at two condensing temperatures of 43.3$^{\circ}C$ and 52.$0^{\circ}C$ and the evaporating temperature was varied over a range from -$25^{\circ}C$ to -5$^{\circ}C$. The evaporator superheat and condenser subcooling were maintained constant at about 5$^{\circ}C$ for all tests. Test results showed that all alternative fluids tested in this work can be used as 'drop-in fluids' to replace R502 without any major problem. It is also found that in the long run HFC alternatives are to be used due to their favorable environmental characteristics and better performance.
