7'-Aldehyde-nucleosides analogue (2a, 2c) were synthesized from 6-N-benzoyl-2',3'-O-isopropylideneadenosine and uridine. The condensation of 2 with ethoxycarbonylmethylene Wittig reagent produced the adenosine and uridine analogues containing extended conjugated diene and ethoxycarbonyl group, ethyl-1',5',6',7',8'-pentadeoxy-1'-(adenin-9-yl)-$\beta$-D-ribo-nona-5'(E),7'(E)-dienofuranuronate (4b) and ethyl-1'. 5',6',7',8'-pentadeoxy-1'-(uracil-1-yl)-$\beta$-D-ribo-nona-5'(E),7'-(E)-dienofuranuronate (4c). 9-[8',8'-dibromo-5',6',7',8' -tetradeoxy-$\beta$-D-ribo-octa-5'(E),7'(E)-diene]nucleosides (6b, 6c) were also prepared from 2 with similar method.
A guanidinium salt of $[U(PW_{11}O_{39})_2]^{10-}$, the solubility of which is adequate for crystal growing, has been synthesized. Using this salt or potassium salt, we have measured the stability of $[U(PW_{11}O_{39})_2]^{10-}$as a function of pH of the solution and found that the anion is stable for the pH range 3~7. We have developed a colorimetric method for determining the concentration of $U^{4+}$. In this method$PW_{11}O_{39}^{7-}$ is added to$U^{4+}$ in such a quantity that the mole ratio $PW_{11}O_{39}^{7-}/ U^{4+}$exceeds 2 and the intensity of the 22.7kK band (${\varepsilon}$1030 M-1cm-1) is measured. In order to develop a continuous method to recover uranium, we have determined the amount of recoverd$PW_{11}O_{39}^{7-}$ after decomposing $[U(PW_{11}O_{39})_2]^{10}$- by adding either a base or an oxidizing agent. The percentage of $PW_{11}O_{39}^{7-}$recovered was approximately 70% when a base was used and approximately 80% when$K_2S_2O_8$ was used. A colorimetric method for determining $PW_{11}O_{39}^{7-}$ has also been developed.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the association of waist circumference (WC) with body composition among individuals with a normal body mass index (BMI) to distinguish muscle and fat mass, as both affect health differently. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We analyzed dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry data (derived from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey, which includes information on fat and lean mass) of 7,493 adults with a normal BMI. Subjects were categorized into four groups of increasing WC. The fourth group was defined as being centrally obese. Each number of subjects are as follows: 1,870, 695, 231, and 39 among men and 3,054, 1,100, 406, and 98 among women. We conducted a sex-stratified linear regression analysis of body composition according to WC group after adjustments for covariates. RESULTS: We observed a positive association of body fat with increasing WC in both men and women (all P for trend: < 0.001). The adjusted mean values for percent body fat with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) according to the four WC groups in ascending order were 17.8 (17.5-18.3), 21.0 (20.6-21.5), 22.1 (21.5-22.8), and 25.1 (24.2-26.1) in men and 29.7 (29.4-30.0), 32.0 (31.6-32.3), 32.9 (32.4-33.4), and 34.7 (33.2-36.1) in women. However, there was an inverted J-shaped association between muscle mass and WC. The fourth group had a higher percent body fat and lower muscle mass than other groups. The adjusted mean values for appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (kg/m2) with 95% CIs according to the four WC groups in ascending order were 7.55 (7.51-7.59), 7.62 (7.56-7.68), 7.65 (7.56-7.74), and 7.22 (7.04-7.41) in men and 5.83 (5.80-5.85), 5.96 (5.92-6.00), 6.03 (5.96-6.10), and 5.88 (5.73-6.03). CONCLUSIONS: There was a positive association between body fat and WC among individuals with normal BMI; conversely there was an inverted J-shaped association between lean body mass and WC. Our findings support the WC measurement should be included in obesity evaluations for adults with a normal BMI.
A disease resistance related gene, MbR7, was identified in the wild apple species, Malus baccata. The MbR7 gene has a single open reading frame (ORF) of 3,288 nucleotides potentially encoding a 1,095-amino acid protein. Its deduced amino acid sequence resembles the N protein of tobacco and the NL27 gene of potato and has several motifs characteristic of a TIR-NBS-LRR R gene subclass. Ectopic expression of MbR7 in Arabidopsis enhanced the resistance against a virulent pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000. Microarray analysis confirmed the induction of defense-related gene expression in 35S::MbR7 heterologous Arabidopsis plants, indicating that the MbR7 gene likely activates a downstream resistance pathway without interaction with pathogens. Our results suggest that MbR7 can be a potential target gene in developing a new disease-resistant apple variety.

A new kind of aminophosphonopeptides containing carbapenem, allyl-(5R,6S)-3-(2-carbobenzyloxyamino-3-dialkylph osphonopropionyl-2-amino)ethanthio-6-{(1'R)-hydro xyethyl}-7-oxo-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-ene-carb oxylate 1a-1d, have been synthesized. 2-Carbobenzyloxyamino-3-dialkylphosphonopropion yl-2-amino-ethanethiol 7a-7d, aminophosphonopeptides, were produced starting from N-carbobenzyloxyserine methyl ester (2) and 2-amino-3-dialkyl-phosphonopropionate(4) by way of methyl 2-carbobenzyloxyamino-3-dialkylphosphonopropion ate 5a-5d. The coupling of amino-phosphonopeptides 7a-7d and allyl-(5R,6S)-6-{(1'R)-hydroxyethyl}-1-aza-3,7-dio xobicyclo[3.2.0]-heptane-2-carboxylate yielded aminophosphonopeptides containing carbapenem 1a-1d.

The 7-dimensional Telescope (7DT) is an innovative multiple telescope system that can perform a rapid identification of optical counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) sources and a wide variety of other astronomical projects. This telescope is being developed as a part of the recently approved National Challenge program, the GW Universe project, with a full operation planned at the end of 2023. The word 7-dimension stands for x, y, z positions, the radial velocity, the time, the wavelength, and the flux of astronomical sources, implying the telescope's capability of performing time-series wide-field, IFU-type spectroscopic observations. The 7DT is composed of about twenty 0.5-m wide-field telescopes, and it can obtain spectral-imaging data at 40 different wavelengths to the depth of 20 AB mag with 3 min exposure for a given epoch. In this talk, we will introduce the telescope system, and outline its scientific capabilities with an emphasis on multi-messenger astronomy and a few other key science topics.
Sundubu, Pork-Bulgogi, Kimchi-pork, Pork rib, Samgyetang, Stir-fried squid, Stir-fried chicken, Braised potato, Braised tofu and Jabchae were selected as takeout-style Korean food items. Sensory evaluation using a 9-point hedonic scale was conducted with residents in Honolulu, Hawaii during a 2 month market test. Among the respondents in the sensory evaluation, Japanese and Americans constituted 32.8% and 25.3%, respectively, of total respondents, which reflect the residential races in the state of Hawaii. The sensory scores of each attribute were judged as follows : aroma 7.2~8.2, color 7.0~8.2, flavor 7.2~8.2, overall preference; pork rib 8.2, pork Bulgogi=braised potato 8.1, stir-fried chicken 8.0, kimchi pork 7.9, Sundubu 7.6, Jabchae and braised tofu 7.5, stir-fried squid 7.2, Samgyetang 7.0. In a satisfaction survey using a 5 point scale after a 2 month market test, the scores of each satisfaction attribute such as quality, price, convenience, difference, etc. were shown to range from 4.1-4.6, indicating that 10 take out-style Korean food items were very popular with Hawaiian consumers. These results suggest that Korean food items are competitive with other ethnic foods in the Hawaii market.
A new isolate, Bacillus sp. ALK-7 can synthesize ethylene from l-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid (ACC) as well as from methionine. The ACC has only been recognized as a key intermediate found in the metabolic pathway leading to ethylene formation in various plants. The efficiency of ethylene formation from the ACC by Bacillus sp. ALK-7 was about 2 times as high as that from the methionine. The reaction from ACC to ethylene formation was also shown to be mediated by the cell-free extracts of Bacillus sp. ALK-7.
Due to the increasing of multimedia data quantity, database searching based on image becomes important. For this scheme, MPEG-7 gives a good solution to efficient data searching. MPEG-7 uses Descriptors which are color, texture, and shape to extract features from images. It is obvious that using more than one Descriptor causes more accurate data searching result than using just one. In this paper, selecting a composite of MPEG-7 visual Descriptor using KL-Expansion is proposed.
Background: ginsenoside Rg5 is a rare ginsenoside with known hypoglycemic effects in diabetic mice. This study aimed to explore the effects of ginsenoside Rg5 on skin wound-healing in the Leprdb/db mutant (db/db) mice (C57BL/KsJ background) model and the underlying mechanisms. Methods: Seven-week-old male C57BL/6J, SLC7A11-knockout (KO), the littermate wild-type (WT), and db/db mice were used for in vivo and ex vivo studies. Results: Ginsenoside Rg5 provided through oral gavage in db/db mice significantly alleviated the abundance of apoptotic cells in the wound areas and facilitated skin wound healing. 50 μM ginsenoside Rg5 treatment nearly doubled the efferocytotic capability of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) from db/db mice. It also reduced NF-κB p65 and SLC7A11 expression in the wounded areas of db/db mice dose-dependently. Ginsenoside Rg5 physically interacted with SLC7A11 and suppressed the cystine uptake and glutamate secretion of BMDCs from db/db and SLC7A11-WT mice but not in BMDCs from SLC7A11-KO mice. In BMDCs and conventional type 1 dendritic cells (cDC1s), ginsenoside Rg5 reduced their glycose storage and enhanced anaerobic glycolysis. Glycogen phosphorylase inhibitor CP-91149 almost abolished the effect of ginsenoside Rg5 on promoting efferocytosis. Conclusion: ginsenoside Rg5 can suppress the expression of SLC7A11 and inhibit its activity via physical binding. These effects collectively alleviate the negative regulations of SLC7A11 on anaerobic glycolysis, which fuels the efferocytosis of dendritic cells. Therefore, ginsenoside Rg5 has a potential adjuvant therapeutic reagent to support patients with wound-healing problems, such as diabetic foot ulcers.
