  • Bacillus velezensis is an important plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium with immense potential in agriculture development. In the present study, Bacillus velezensis Lle-9 was isolated from the bulbs of Lilium leucanthum. The isolated strain showed antifungal activities against plant pathogens like Botryosphaeria dothidea, Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium fujikuroi. The highest percentage of growth inhibition i.e., 68.56±2.35% was observed against Fusarium oxysporum followed by 63.12 ± 2.83%, 61.67 ± 3.39% and 55.82 ± 2.76% against Botrytis cinerea, Botryosphaeria dothidea, and Fusarium fujikuroi, respectively. The ethyl acetate fraction revealed a number of bioactive compounds and several were identified as antimicrobial agents such as diketopiperazines, cyclo-peptides, linear peptides, latrunculin A, 5α-hydroxy-6-ketocholesterol, (R)-S-lactoylglutathione, triamterene, rubiadin, moxifloxacin, 9-hydroxy-5Z,7E,11Z,14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid, D-erythro-C18-Sphingosine, citrinin, and 2-arachidonoyllysophosphatidylcholine. The presence of these antimicrobial compounds in the bacterial culture might have contributed to the antifungal activities of the isolated B. velezensis Lle-9. The strain showed plant growth-promoting traits such as production of organic acids, ACC deaminase, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), siderophores, and nitrogen fixation and phosphate solubilization. IAA production was accelerated with application of exogenous tryptophan concentrations in the medium. Further, the lily plants upon inoculation with Lle-9 exhibited improved vegetative growth, more flowering shoots and longer roots than control plants under greenhouse condition. The isolated B. velezensis strain Lle-9 possessed broad-spectrum antifungal activities and multiple plant growth-promoting traits and thus may play an important role in promoting sustainable agriculture. This strain could be developed and applied in field experiments in order to promote plant growth and control disease pathogens.

  • The feasibility of algae as means of removing nitrogen and phosphorus from secondary treated swine wastewater was studied. Among the tested 7 species of Chlorella vulgaris (UTEX 265), Chlorella sp. GE 21, Botryococcus braunii (UTEX 572), Botryococcus sp. GE 24, Scenedesmus quadricauda, Phormidium sp. GE 2, and Spirulina maxima (UTEX 2342), C. vulgaris was selected for its fast growth and abilities to remove nitrogen and phosphorus and to produce algal biomass from swine wastewater. C. vulgaris grew well at 35$^{\circ}C$, and the optimum initial pH for growth was 8.0. In the effect of light intensity, the growth of C. vulgaris was limited under a light intensity of less than 40 ${\mu}$E/$m^2$/s. The secondary treated swine wastewater contained 58.7 mg/l of total nitrogen and 14.7 mg/l of total phosphorus, and was diluted to 75, 50, and 25% with groundwater to be treated. Nitrogen and phosphorus were removed by C. vulgaris in all diluted swine wastewaters among which the most effective removal was in 75% swine wastewater (swine wastewater:groundwater=3:1). There was a tendency of linear increase in nitrogen and phosphorus removal time with increasing concentration of swine wastewater. Under the optimized culture condition, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were effectively removed to 95.3% and 96.0%, respectively, in 25% swine wastewater after 4-day incubation.

  • Immunotherapy has been used in support of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole treatment for Pneumocvstis corinii pneumonia. The present study investigated the therapeutic or preventive effects of heterogeneous hyperimmune IgG antibody (HIA) in experimental rats. Their immunity was suppressed by steroid injection, and they were also injected peritoneally with HIA which reacted with 40-55, 92, 116, and 200 kDa bands of the crude antigen. All rats were infected by p. ccrinii and the cystic forms on lung impression smears were counted. The count was 20.5-76.5 (mean 52.5 ± 19.)1 in those which received steroid only, but decreased to 6.0-21.0 (mean 13.5 : 10.6) in those of group 3 which received HIA for the same duration. In other groups, the mean count ranged from 29.9 t 32.9 to 54.1 t 47.7, and in those which received 13.7 mg HIA the reduction effect was greater than in those which received 6.8 mg or 20.5 mg HIA. The present finding confirmed that in rats during the early stage of infection, the heterogeneous HIA to MSG antigen bands had a partial effect on p. cori, nii pneumonia, both prophylactically and therapeutically.

  • Recurrent bacterial meningitis is the reappearance of two or more episodes of meningitis caused by a different or same organism after an intervening period of full convalescence. Predisposing factors for recurrent bacterial meningitis include immunodeficiency and developmental and traumatic anatomical defects. Therefore, careful evaluation of children with recurrent meningitis is essential. We report the case of a patient with a skull base abnormality who had suffered from four events of bacterial meningitis between 8 and 17 years of age. He experienced another event of bacterial meningitis at the age of 21, without undergoing correction for the anatomical defect. Streptococcus agalactiae was identified in the patient's blood and cerebrospinal fluid culture. Afterwards, he underwent surgical treatment for a meningioma; this meningioma was strongly suspected as the cause of the recurrence.

  • Species composition and seasonal variations of shrimp caught in the adjacent waters Geomundo, Korea were studied using the monthly catch of beam trawl fishery from November 1998 to October 1999. During in the study period, a total of 700,765 shrimps consisting 36 species, 27 genus and 11 families were collected. The community was dominated by Palaemon gravieri, Parapenaeopsis tenellus, Solenocela melantho and Plesionika izumiae. The peak abundance of shrimp occurred in summer, and low abundance in winter and spring. Major species occurred in area A, B and C was P. gravieri, and P. tenellus, and P. izumiae and S. melantho, respectively. The number of individual and abundance showed in July, and low in November. It was noted that values of species diversity, dominance and evenness indices were high in adjacent water Geomundo and lower in adjacent water Chodo and Chodo-Sonjukdo. Analysis of dendrogram of the clustering showed that there were two distinct groups; Geomundo group and Chodo-Sonjukdo group.

  • In order to investigate factors affecting the denitrification in the F-STEP PROCESS using a loess ball as support media and Pseudomonas DWC 17-8, calcining temperature, loess ball size, pH, nitrate concentration, working temperature, and inhibitor were studied in batch mode using synthetic sludge. A 5- 10 mm of loess ball (960$^{circ}$ of calcining temperature) was the most suitable for denitrification. When the initial pH was increased from 3.0 to 7.0, the removal efficiency of nitrate was increased. Specifically, at initial pH of 7.0, the maximum removal efficiency of nitrate was 5.0 mg/min. When the initial concentration of nitrate was increased from 100 to 400 mg/l, the removal efficiency of nitrate was proportional to the concentration of nitrate. The maximum removal efficiency of nitrate was 5.72 mg/min at 400 mg/l of initial concentration. When the operating temperature was increased from 10 to 30$^{circ}$, the removal efficiency of nitrate was increased from 0.76 to 6.15 mg/min, and at above 40$^{circ}$ of operating temperature, it was decreased from 4.0 to 2.0 mg/min. Among the various inhibitors, higher than 10$^{-1}$ M of sodium azide abolished this reaction completely. When the KCN concentration was above 10$^{-1}$ M, the reaction was inhibited completely. In the case of 2,4-dinitrophenol and sodium sulphide, it was inhibited at above 10$^{-2}$ M completely. For testing the various flow orders of the F-STEP PROCESS for effective denitrification using practical wastewater, continuous experiments under the optimum conditions were carried out for 60 days. Among the various processes, the PROCESS A gave the highest efficiencies of denitrification, nitrification, and total nitrogen (TN) removal with 86.5, 89.5, and $90\%$, respectively. For scale-up in the PROCESS A, real farm wastewater was used and pilot tests carried out for 90 days. The denitrification efficiency was $97.5\%$, which was increased by $12.7\%$. The efficiencies of TN removal and nitrification were 96.6 and $70.0\%$, respectively. The removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was $63.7\%$, which was increased by $20\%$.

  • The seasonal variations of primary production were investigated by phyto-PAM chlorophyll fluorometry as well as classical methods (standing crops of phytoplanktons and chlorophyll ${\alpha}$) in the Beopsu Marsh, Haman-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. The amounts of turbidity, SS, T-N, T-P, BOD, COD, Ca$^{2+}$ and Cl$^-$ were the highest at the station 3, where located in flowout site of wastewater treated by the filtration plants. The water quality was the third level by the standard of BOD and COD. The amount of chlorophyll a (268.8 mg L$^{-1}$) was the highest at the station 2 in April because the cell density (2,677 cells mL$^{-1}$) of Micractinium pusillum increased suddenly from February (180 cells mL$^{-1}$). The patterns of primary production of phytoplankton by phyto-PAM chlorophyll fluorometry were fallen in with those of standing crops and chlorophyll a of phyto-planktons. The primary production was varied according to stations and seasons. The water environments of the Beopsu Marsh as a natural mounument should be under the control of a regular examination in order to preserve the ecosystem.

  • We have presented a 2-dimensional fluxgate sensor with ferrite core, excitation, and pick-up coil. This fluxgate sensor system consists of a sensing element, driving circuits for excitation coil and signal processing for detecting second harmonic frequency component which is proportional to the DC magnetic to be measured. The sensor core is excited by a square waveform of voltage through the excitation coil of 80 turns. The second harmonic output of pick-up coil(x and y axis: 100 turns) is measured by FFT spectrum analyzer. This result is compared with output of PSD(phase sensitive detector) unit for detecting the second harmonic component. The measured maximum sensitivity is about 1580 V/T at driving frequency of 1.5 kHz and excitation current of 2 App. The nonlinearity of this system is measured about 2.3%(PSD) and about 1%(second harmonics of the pick-up). The angle error of the system is ${\pm}2$ %/FS.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy and mechanism of the cryo-precipitation, solvent/detergent (S/D) treatment, monoclonal anti-FVIIIc antibody (mAb) column chromatography, Q-Sepharose column chromatography, and lyophilization involved in the manufacture of antithemophilic factor VII(GreenMono) from human plasma, in the removal and/or inactivation of blood-borne viruses. A variety of experimental model viruses for human pathogenic viruses, including the bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), bovine herpes virus (BHV), murine encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), and porcine parvovirus (PPV), were all selected for this study. BHV and EMCV were effectively partitioned from a factor VII during the cryo-precipitation with a log reduction factor of 2.83 and 3.24, respectively. S/D treatment using the organic solvent, tri(n-butyl) phosphate (TNBP), and the detergent, Triton X-100, was a robust and effective step in inactivating enveloped viruses. The titers of BHV and BVDV were reduced from the initial titer of 8.85 and $7.89{log_10} {TCID_50}$, respectively, reaching undetectable levels within 1 min of the S/D treatment. The mAb chromatography was the most effective step for removing nonenveloped viruses, EMCV and PPV, with the log reduction factors of 4.86 and 3.72, respectively. Q-Sepharose chromatography showed a significant efficacy for partitioning BHV, BVDV, EMCV, and PPV with the log reduction the log reduction factors of 2.32, 2.49, 2.60, and 1.33 respectively. Lyophilization was an effective step in inactivating g nonenveloped viruses rather than enveloped viruses, where the log reduction factors of BHV, BVDV, DMCV, and PPV were 1.41, 1.79, 4.76, and 2.05, respectively. The cumulative log reduction factors of BHV, BVDV, EMCV, and PPV were ${\geqq}$11.12, ${\geqq}$7.88, 15.46, and 7.10, respectively. These results indicate that the production process for GreenMono has a sufficient virus-reducing capacity to achieve a high margin of the virus safety.
