  • Technology demonstration for the development of a 75-tonf liquid rocket engine(LRE) thrust chamber for a space launch vehicle has been started on the basis of the previously acquired 30-tonf LRE technologies. For this purpose, a technology demonstration plan was established upon considering the currently available firing test facility in Korea and performance evaluation firing tests were performed on technology demonstration model thrust chambers under a restricted test condition. This paper describes the plan and current status of technology demonstration for a 75-tonf LRE thrust chamber.

  • Firing tests have been carried out for a technology demonstration model of 75-tonf-class combustor which is to be used on the liquid rocket engine of a Korean space launch vehicle. Firing tests were done at 50% of the nominal flow rate because of incapability of the test facility and limit of the test bed strength. Through the low pressure firing tests of 75-tonf-class channel cooling thrust chamber, operability and stability at the ignition and combustion phases were confirmed. Additionally it was foreseen that the 75-tonf-class thrust chamber would satisfy the performance requirements.

  • For the successful development of 75-tonf-class liquid rocket engine, a plenty of tests on each engine component have to be performed and this is equally true for a combustor. However the test facility which is in operation at Korea Aerospace Research Institute lacks its capacity to perform fire tests of a 75 tonf class combustor at its nominal thrust. Since the test facility has to be ready prior to the start of development tests, it is very urgent to establish the test facility. The preliminary design of a test facility for a 75 tonf class combustor which was performed according to such a necessity is described in the paper.

  • Using the technology demonstration model of 75-tonf-class combustor which is expected to be used to the rocket engine of a korean space launch vehicle, 2 times of firing tests were carried out. Firing tests were done at 50% of the nominal flow rate because of incapability of the test facility and limit of the test bed strength. Through the low pressure firing tests of 75-tonf-class channel cooling thrust chamber, reliability and stability at the ignition and combustion phases were confirmed. • As a development test of the 75-tonf LOx/Kerosene liquid rocket engine for KSLV-II first Stage Engine, hot firing test of 75-tonf engine are performed. The current status of development test on first stage 75-tonf engine system including combustion chamber, turbopump, gas generator, propellant supply system are presented. During the 75tonf engine test campaign, the development of startup sequence of LOx-Kerosene engine system, engine startup using pyrostarter, ignition of gas generator, steady operation and engine shutdown is successfully performed. As a passenger test during engine hot firing tests, Thrust Vector Control system (TVC) of the engine are also evaluated during engine hot firing test. The results of hot firing test of 75-tonf thrust engine system will be used for the design confirmation and performance evaluation of 75 tonf engine system for KSLV-II first Stage.

  • The Cold flow and ignition tests have been performed for a technology demonstration model of 75-tonf liquid rocket engine thrust chamber which was designed and manufactured on the basis of the previous development experience of a 30-tonf liquid rocket engine thrust chamber. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the facility supply pipelines and the filling time of the cooling kerosene were obtained through the cold flow tests. The ignition cyclogram was determinded using the results and the ignition test was successfully carried out. The acquired data and test technique of present ignition test will be used in hot firing tests.

  • Structural analyses of a engine system is required in development stage for increasing structural reliability and reducing weight. Attitude of a launch vehicle during flight is controlled by combustion chamber rotation varying with TVC (thrust vector control) actuator displacements. In this study nonlinear static analysis is performed for a 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine using before and after the TVC actuation.

  • A liquid rocket engine experiences various static loads in flight, such as high pressures due to propellents, thrust and thermal loads due to cryogenic liquid oxygen and combustion gas with extreme vibration. During the engine development stage, structural analyses and investigation on the strain measured from ground firing tests are necessary for determining the structural reliability of the engine. In this study, the strain characteristics, obtained from the ground firing tests of a 75 tonf-class engine, were analyzed.

  • A firing test of the 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine to be used as the first and second stage engines of the KSLV-II was carried out at the rocket engine test facility(RETF). Since this engine uses liquid oxygen as the oxidizer, which is a cryogenic fluid, it is essential that the chill down of the supply pipe line and engine proceed for the firing test; thus, the given inlet requirements must be met. Moreover, it is important to understand the chill down characteristics of the facility and the engine and the amount of liquid oxygen consumed in the chill down process for efficient test operation in the future. In this paper, chill down characteristics of the supply pipe and the engine were evaluated through the investigation of the chill down process of the 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine at each stage before and after run tank pressurization. In addition, the amount of liquid oxygen consumed was also evaluated.
