Purpose: This study evaluated the bonding strength of direct relining resin to Co-Cr denture base material according to surface treatment and immersion time. Materials and methods: In this study, Co-Cr alloy was used in hexagon shape. Each specimen was cut in flat surface, and sandblasted with $110\;{\mu}m$$Al_2O_3$ for 1 minute. 54 specimens were divided into 3 groups; group A-control group, group B-applied with surface primer A, group C-applied with surface primer B. Self curing direct resin was used for this study. Each group was subdivided into another 3 groups according to the immersion time. After the wetting storage, shear bond strength of the specimens were measured with universal testing machine. The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc method. Results: In experiment of sandblasting specimens, surface roughness of the alloy was the highest after 1 minute sandblasting. In experiment of testing shear bond strength, bonding strength was lowered on group B, C, A. There were significant differences between 3 groups. According to period, Bonding strength was the highest on 0 week storage group, and the weakest on 2 week storage group. But there were no significant differences between 3 periods. According to group and period, bonding strength of all group were lowered according to immersion time but there were no significant differences on group B and group C, but there was significant difference according to immersion time on group A. Conclusion: It is useful to sandblast and adopt metal primers when relining Co-Cr metal base dentures in chair-side.
Membership qualifications and recognition of the subspecialty training programs by the Korean Association of Pediatric Surgeons(KAPS) have been determined by criteria based on the number of neonatal and total pediatric surgical cases registered, since 1989 (Index cases). The numbers are based on a survey of the 14 founding members of the society by Jung et al. in 1987. The current survey is to review the present status of the index cases from 1997 to 1999 among 36 members of the KAPS. Two surveys were undertaken for this study. In the first survey, cases were collected by the registration form, composed of neonatal(N), important pediatric surgical cases (I), tumor and other similar operations(T) and other common pediatric surgical cases(O). Thirty members responded. and the result was discussed at the Topic Discussion section of the 15th Annual Congress of KAPS, 2000. The second survey analyzed additive data, proposed during discussion at the Congress. Twenty-three members responded. This report is the analysis of the both surveys. The average numbers of the cases/year/surgeon of N, I, T, O and total were 19.5, 51.8, 9.5, 77.1 and 356.5. respectively. The number of index cases(N+I+T)/year/surgeon was 80.8. The ratio of (N+I+T)/total cases was 0.3. Seventeen of 30 members have more than 20 cases of N per year. Twelve members have more than 150 cases, and 13 do more than 100 cases of I per year. Fourteen members have more than 10 cases of T per year. Nineteen and 10 members experienced more than 150 and 100 of index cases(N+I+T) per year. A new list of the index cases and coding system are proposed for the future regular update.

Five different chopped frozen garlic products samples, three from Chinese and two from Korean origins being commercially available products in Korean market, were used to confirm their pre-pasteurization or pre-irradiation status by screening (direct epifluorescent filter technique/aerobic plate counts, DEFT/APC; electronic nose, E-nose; photostimulated luminescence, PSL) and identification (thermoluminescence, TL; electron spin resonance, ESR) techniques. Some parts of samples were gamma-irradiated at 1 kGy to be used as control samples in irradiation history identification. DEFT/APC and e-nose successfully showed distinct results between the domestic and imported samples. The PSL photon counts of all the unknown samples were less than 700 (negative), while most of 1 kGy-irradiated samples gave PSL photon counts more than 5,000 (positive). The domestic unknown samples produced the TL glow peaks after $300^{\circ}C$ or more, whereas the imported samples showed TL peaks at the range of $240{\sim}250^{\circ}C$. A clear TL glow peak was obtained from all irradiated samples at $150{\sim}250^{\circ}C$. The unknown samples of Chinese origin gave radiation-specific cellulose ESR signal that was not shown by domestic samples. A multiple step of applying the physical analytical methods is recommended for the effective identification of irradiation status on chopped frozen garlic products.
Background : Although lung involvement has been reported in 5 to 46% of dermatomyositis/polymyositis(DM/PM) patients, reports of the condition in Korea are rare. This study evaluated the clinical features of lung involvement in DM/PM patients. Methods : The medical records, laboratory results and radiologic findings of 79 DM/pM patients, who attended the Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) between 1989 and 1999, were reviewed retrospectively. Results : A total 79 patients of whom 24 patients(33%) showed lung involvement, were enrolled in this study. More patients with lung involvement were female(F:M=11:1), and older compared with those without lung involvement. Patients with lung involvement presented with dyspnea(79%), coughing(67%), an elevated ESR, and CK/LD. Anti-Jo 1 antibody test was positive in 30%, which is significantly higher in patients with lung involvement. A simple chest X-ray of the patients with lung involvement exhibited reticular opacity(50%), reticulonodular opacity(30%), patchy opacity(29%), nodular opacity(13%) and linear opacity(4%). HRCT(n=24) showed ground glass opacity(75%), linear or septal thickening(50%), patchy consolidation(42%), honey-combing(33%) and nodular opacity(17%). The pulmonary function test showed a restrictive ventilatory pattern(77%) and a lower diffusing capacity(62%). The patients were followed up during a mean duration of $30{\pm}28$ months. They were treated with steroid only(50%) or a combination of steroids and cytotoxic agents(46%). Muscle symptoms were improved in 89% with treatment, but an improvement in the respiratory symptoms or in the pulmonary function test was rare. Patients with lung involvement had a higher mortality rate(21%) than those without lung involvement(10%) during the follow-up periods. Conclusion : DM/PM patients with lung involvement were mostly female, older and had a higher positive rate Anti-Jo 1 antibodies, but there was no significant difference in prognosis.
Frequently patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have lowered arterial oxygen saturation in daytime. During sleep, they are apt to experience additional hypoxemia. These episode of nocturnal hypoxemia are usually associated with periods of relative hypoventilation. Noctunal hypoxemia may be associated with cardiac arrhythmia and with acute increase in pulmonary arterial pressure and may be implicated in the development of chronic pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. We selected 14 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 9 with emphysema dominant type and 5 with chronic bronchitis dominant type, to examine the frequency and severity of nocturnal hypoxemia and the effect of oxygen in prevention of nocturnal hypoxemia. The results were as follows; 1) On PFT, FVC, $FEV_1$, and $FEV_1$/FVC showed no significant difference between the emphysema dominant type (pink puffers, PP) and the chronic bronchitis dominant type (blue bloaters, BB). But DLCO/VA for the PP group was $45.7{\pm}15.1%$ which was significantly different from BB group, $82.4{\pm}5.6%$. 2) The daytime arterial oxygen saturation ($SaO_2$) and the lowest $SaO_2$, during sleep for the BB group were significantly lower than for the PP group. 3) The hypoxemic episodes during sleep were more frequent in BB group and the duration of hypoxemic episode was longer in BB group. 4) In both group studied, although there was a tendency for a lower L-$SaO_2$ (the lowest $SaO_2$, during sleep), an increase in hypoxemic episodes and duration as the daytime $SaO_2$, fell lower, the only parameter which showed significant correlation was daytime $SaO_2$, and the frequency of hypoxemic episodes in the PP group (r=-0.68, P<0.05). 5) In PP group, with oxygen supplementation, L-$SaO_2$, during sleep showed significant increase, and there was a tendency for the frequency of hypoxemic episodes and duration to fall but it was not significant. 6) In BB group, oxygen supplementation significantly increased the L-$SaO_2$ during sleep and also significantly decreased the frequency and duration of hypoxemic episode. From these results, we can see that oxygen supplementation during sleep can prevent the decrease in $SaO_2$ to some extent and that this effect of oxygen can be seen more prominently in the BB group.

Background: A national health care initiative recommends routine spirometry screening of all smokers over age 45 or patients with respiratory symptoms. In response to the recommendation, new, simple, and inexpensive desktop spirometers for the purpose of promoting widespread spirometric screening were marketed. The performance of these spirometers was evaluated in vivo testing with healthy subjects. However, the clinical setting allows spirometric assessment of various pathologic combinations of flow and volume. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of a desktop spirometer to a standard laboratory spirometer, in a clinical setting with pathologic pulmonary function. Method: In a health check-up center, where screening pulmonary funct test was performed using the HI-801 spirometer. Subjects who revealed the ventilation defect in screening spirometry, performed the spirometry again using the standard Vmax spectra 22d spirometer in a tertiary care hospital pulmonary function laboratory. Pulmonary function test with both spirometer was performed according to the guidelines of the American Thoracic Society. Results: 109 patients were enrolled. Pulmonary function measurements (FVC, $FEV_1$, PEFR, FEF25%-75%) from the HI-801 correlated closely (r=0.94, 0.93, 0.81, 0.84, respectively) with those performed with the Vmax spectra 22d and showed the good limits of agreement and differences between the 2 devices; FVC +0.35 L, $FEV_1$ +0.16 L, PEFR +1.85 L/s, FEF25%-75%-0.13 L/s. With the exception of $FEV_1$, FEF25%-75%, these differences were significant(p<0.05) but small. Conclusion: The HI-801 spirometer is comparable to the standard laboratory spirometer, Vmax spectra 22d, with high accurary for $FEV_1$ and FVC and acceptable differences for clinical use.

As a method of utilization of sardine, the processing conditions of the sardine sauce extracts and the taste compounds of products were investigated. To prepare the sardine sauce extracts, chopped sardine was mixed with $1\%$, onion powder, $1\%$ garlic powder, $1\%$ red pepper powder, loft koji and $50\%$ water, and then hydrolyzed under different conditions of hydrolysis. The optimum conditions for hydrolysis were $55^{\circ}C$, 6 hours, pH 6.5-7.0. After hydrolysis, the hydrolysates were heated at $100^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes with $5\%$ soybean protein isolate for inactivation of enzymes and improvement of bitter taste of the hydrolysates. Finally, $10\%$ salt was added to develop the characteristic taste of sauce extracts. The major taste compounds of the products were free amino acids, non-volatile organic acids and nucleotides and their related compounds. The major free amino acids in the products were arginine, histidine, lysine, glutamic acid, phenylalanine, leucine and alanine. The contents of these free amino acids were in the range of $68.2\%\;to\;69.9\%$ of the total free amino acids of products. The major non-volatile organic acids ill the products were lactic acid and $\alpha-ketoglutaric$ acid which occupied more than $95\%$ of total non-volatile organic acids. The contents of free amino acids, non-volatile organic acids and nucleotides and their related compounds were not changed during storage. Total creatinine, betaine and TMAO were seemed to act an auxiliary role in taste of the products. Judging from the results of chemical experiments and sensory evaluation, the product prepared with koji and soybean protein isolate was excellent as seasoning materials.

In this study fermentation of fresh ascidian was attempted to widen the utility of ascidian. Fresh deshelled and sliced ascidians were fermented for 90days at $25^{\circ}C$ with different salt contents of 5, 10, 15 and $20\%$ (w/w) and at $5^{\circ}C$ with 5 and $10\%$ salt. Changes of such components during fermentation as free amino acids, nucleotides and the related compounds, volatile basic nitrogen(VBN), trimethyl amine(TMA), amino nitrogen and total creatinine were determined. VBN increased rapidly after 30days of fermentation at $25^{\circ}C$ while slowly in cases of fermentation at $5^{\circ}C$ and with high salt concentration. Amino nitrogen and the total creatinine also increased gradually until 45 days and 30days of fermentation, respectively, hereafter tended to decrease. ATP and ADP seemed to degrade rapidly in fresh ascidian post harvest and AMP, IMP and inosine also degraded down to hypoxanthine during fermentation. After 45days of fermentation, in the free amino acid composition of fermented ascidian were taurine, proline, glutamic acid, histidine, lysine, alanine and valine in order. The amino acids known as sweetner like prolline, lysine, alanine and glycine were in increased in fermented ascidian. The result of sensory evaluation of fermented ascidian pretreated with acid or sulfite solution showed that the peculiar taste and flavor of ascidian remained without browning for 45days fermentation at $5^{\circ}C$.

Purpose : We compared the asthma predictive index(API) and the modified asthma predictive index (mAPI) of the Tuscon Children's Respiratory Study Group in Korean children with recurrent wheezing. We investigated the atopic profiles and presence of allergen sensitization of each risk group, and ascertained the significant clinical risk factors. Methods : Two hundred and sixty two children, who visited for recurrent wheezing from 1998 to 2005, were enrolled and divided into groups by API and mAPI. We investigated the history of the patients and their families, atopic profiles, and sensitization to aeroallergen and food allergens. Twenty nine children were followed up to 6 years of age and we evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive value of both indices. Results : The high risk group of API were of older age, were more likely to be sensitized to aeroallergen(P=0.001) and food allergen(P=0.034) and had higher levels of total eosinophil count, eosinophil percent, serum ECP, total IgE, and D.p-, D.f-specific IgE. High risk group of mAPI showed higher levels of atopic markers such as egg-, milk-, D.p- and D.f-specific IgE. Even though API did not include allergen sensitization, the high risk group was more significantly sensitized to common allergens than the low risk group. Twenty nine children were followed up until 6 years of age; therefore 15 children were diagnosed as asthma, clinically. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of mAPI were higher than API. Conclusion : Both high risk groups of API and mAPI had higher levels of atopic markers and were more sensitized to common allergens. These findings suggest that sensitization to aeroallergens and food allergens are more objective markers as asthma predictive indices. In addition, mAPI is a more reliable index in predicting asthma in Korean children with recurrent wheezing than is API. But only 29 patients were followed until the age of 6, so we need to include more children with long term follow up for future study.

High quality transplants are critical for success in crop production. Increasing numbers of growers purchase their transplants from specialized transplant producers instead of growing their own transplants. A drawback of purchasing transplants is the risk of deterioration to transplants during transportation from transplant producers to the growers. This study evaluates the influence of temperature on the quality of grafted tomatoes transplants (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Super Doterang), in order to propose optimum temperature condition for the transportation of grafted tomato transplants. Grafted tomato transplants with visible flower trusses were exposed to different air temperature ($10^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, or $40^{\circ}C$) for 2, 4, or 6 hours. After treatment, the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) values of tomato transplants treated at 25 and $40^{\circ}C$ were lower than that at $10^{\circ}C$. The root fresh weight was lowest at $40^{\circ}C$. After transplanting, the transplants that were exposed to the air temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ exhibited chlorosis and blight on lower leaves. The degree of damage on leaves was severer as the high temperature exposure time was longer. The temperature conditions during the transportation also influenced the growth, flowering and fruit set of tomatoes after transplanting. The fruit number and weight of first truss was lowest at $40^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours. Accordingly, it is recommended that the temperature during the transportation should be controlled and kept at the range from 10 to $25^{\circ}C$ even though the period is short (within as six hours) in order to maintain the quality of transplants.
