Underwater gliders do not typically have separate propellers for forward motion. They generate propulsive forces based on the difference between their buoyancy and gravity. They can control the volume from the buoyancy engine to adjust the propulsive force. In addition, the attitude of the underwater glider is controlled by a rubberless motion controller. The motion controller can change the mass center and moment of inertia of the inner moving mass. Owing to the change in these parameters, the attitude of the underwater glider is changed. In this study, we derive nonlinear, six degree of freedom (DOF) mathematical models for the motion controller and buoyancy engine. Using these equations, we perform dynamic simulations of the proposed underwater glider, and verify the suitability of the design and dynamic performances of the proposed underwater glider. We then perform the motion control simulation for the pitch and roll angle, and analyze the dynamic performance according to the pitch and roll angles.
MPEG-I is actively working on standardization on the immersive video coding which provides up to 6 degree of freedom (6DoF) in terms of viewpoint. In a virtual space of 3DoF+, which is defined as an extension of 360 with motion parallax, looking at the scene from another viewpoint (another position in space) requires rendering an additional viewpoint using multiple videos included in the 3DoF+ video. In the MPEG-I Visual workgroup, efficient coding methods for 3DoF+ video are being studied, and they released Test Model for Immersive Video (TMIV) recently. This paper presents a patch packing method which packs the patches into atlases efficiently for improving coding efficiency of 3DoF+ video in TMIV. The proposed method improves the reconstructed view quality with reduced coding artifacts by introducing guardbands between patches in the atlas.

The frequency of marine accidents of vessels in Korea is steadily increasing and it is concentrated on small vessels with less than 10 tons of gross tonnage. Therefore, preventing capsizing accidents in small vessels is important to reduce the cost in terms of human and property damage due to such accidents. However, research on the seakeeping performance of small vessels has been insufficient, and there are no domestic and international regulations on seakeeping performance. Therefore, in this study, capsizing accidents caused by poor loading conditions were investigated by examining the adjudications of the small vessels in which the capsizing accidents occurred. Hydrostatic calculations and seakeeping performance analysis were performed for a representative vessel. A vessel generally performs a six-degree-of-freedom motion during operation. In this study, the response amplitude operator and response spectrum of a representative vessel were calculated to determine the roll motion. Moreover, a short-term statistical analysis of the vessel according to the loading conditions was performed for the wave stationary status for 3 h. From the results, it was estimated that, when the loading condition of a small vessel is poor, its roll motion increases, greatly reducing its stability.

The hydrodynamic interaction of two floating bodies in waves freely floating or connected by a rigid link is studied by using a boundary element method in the frequency-domain. The exact two-body hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass, wave damping and exciting force are calculated from the radiation-diffraction potential solution of the improved Green integral equation associated with the free surface Green function. The irregular frequencies in the conventional Green integral equation make it difficult to predict the physical resonance of the fluid in the gap between two bodies floating side by side. However, the improved Green integral equation employed in this study is free of irregular frequencies and always yields the exact solution of the multi-body radiation-diffraction potential boundary value problem. The 6 degree-of-freedom motions of two bodies freely floating side by side or connected parallel by a rigid link have been calculated for the incident wave frequencies ranging from 0.1 to 5 radians per second in head, left and right bow quartering seas. The 6-component load of the rigid link have also been presented.
In this study, a conceptual study was performed for the leisure boat simulator used for navigation training. The aim of this work was to secure the basic operational capability of a leisure boat as a simulated driving device for a general novice operator. A leisure boat simulator was designed to support a user more efficiently regarding navigation proficiency and safety training, as well as to minimize the limitation of place and time and it conveniently and cheaply. A cockpit for navigation status display and operational input, 3D visualization graphic device, and parallel display device were designed to give the trainee a maximum sense of reality by applying a motion platform with six degree of freedom, in which disturbance movement such waves, winds, and tide were simulated for the operator. Leisure boat simulator training scenario was developed by analysis of water-related leisure activities act and sea traffic safety act.

The present work is to analyze the longitudinal static stability and the drop trajectory of fighter aircraft's external fuel tank, of which horizontal fin is modified as the 20% scale down size compared with the original one. The analytical results to the pitching stability of external fuel tank using a thin airfoil's aerodynamic force data show the corresponding tendency to results of wind tunnel experiment. Results of trajectory simulation by the 6 degree of freedom equations of motion, comparing with drop trajectories of wind tunnel experiment, are shown that aircraft's attitude affects strongly on horizontal movement but not on the vertical movement. Those results give the reliability to aircraft safety when the external fuel tank with the 20% reduced horizontal fins is released from aircraft based on the flight manual.
This paper deals with the low velocity impact response and dynamic stresses of composite sandwich truncated conical shells (STCS) with compressible or incompressible core. Impacts are assumed to occur normally over the top face-sheet and the interaction between the impactor and the structure is simulated using a new equivalent three-degree-of-freedom (TDOF) spring-mass-damper (SMD) model. The displacement fields of core and face sheets are considered by higher order and first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), respectively. Considering continuity boundary conditions between the layers, the motion equations are derived based on Hamilton's principal incorporating the curvature, in-plane stress of the core and the structural damping effects based on Kelvin-Voigt model. In order to obtain the contact force, the displacement histories and the dynamic stresses, the differential quadrature method (DQM) is used. The effects of different parameters such as number of the layers of the face sheets, boundary conditions, semi vertex angle of the cone, impact velocity of impactor, trapezoidal shape and in-plane stresses of the core are examined on the low velocity impact response of STCS. Comparison of the present results with those reported by other researchers, confirms the accuracy of the present method. Numerical results show that increasing the impact velocity of the impactor yields to increases in the maximum contact force and deflection, while the contact duration is decreased. In addition, the normal stresses induced in top layer are higher than bottom layer since the top layer is subjected to impact load. Furthermore, with considering structural damping, the contact force and dynamic deflection decrees.

We propose a numerical scheme to simulate the time-domain echo signals at tracking radar for a realistic scenario where an EAD (expendable active decoy) and an airborne target are both in dynamic states. On various scenarios where the target takes different maneuvers, the trajectories of the EAD ejected from the target are accurately calculated by solving 6-DOF (Degree-of-Freedom) equations of the motion for the EAD. At each sampling time of the echo signal, the locations of the EAD and the target are assumed to be fixed. Thus, the echo power from the EAD can be simply calculated by using the Friis transmission formula. The returned power from the target can be computed based on the pre-calculated scattering matrix of the target. In this paper, an IPO (iterative physical optics) method is used to construct the scattering matrix database of the target. The sinc function-interpolation formulation (sampling theorem) is applied to compute the scattering at any incidence angle from the database. A simulator is developed based on the proposed scheme to estimate the echo signals, which can consider the movement of the airborne target and EAD, also the scattering of the target and the RF specifications of the EAD. For applications, we consider the detection probability of the target in the presence of the EAD based on Monte Carlo simulation.
The selectivity of a gas in the carbon molecular sieve membrane (CMSM) can be expressed as the ratio of the product of the diffusivity and the solubility of two different gases. The diffusivity is also expressed as the product of the entropy and the total energy (kinetic and potential energy) in the nano-sized pore of the membrane. The present study calculates the entropic-energy and selectivity of penetrant gases such as H$_2$, O$_2$, N$_2$, and CO$_2$ from the gas-in-a box theory to physically analyze the diffusivity of penetrant gas in slit-shaped pore of CMSM focusing on the restriction of gas motion based on the size difference between penetrant gas pairs. The contribution of each energy term is converted to entropic term separately. By the conjugated calculation for each entropic-energy, the entropic effects on diffusivity-selectivity for gas pairs such as H$_2$/N$_2$, CO$_2$/N$_2$, and O$_2$/N$_2$ were analyzed within active pore of CMSM. In the activated diffusion domain, the calculated value of entropic-selectivity lies between 9.25 and 111.6 for H$_2$/N$_2$, between 3.36 and 6.0 for CO$_2$/N$_2$, and between 1.25 and 16.94 for O$_2$/N$_2$, respectively. The size decrement of active pore in CMSM had the direct effect on the reduction of translational entropic-energy and the contribution of vibrational entropic-energy for N$_2$, O$_2$, and H$_2$ was almost negligible. However, the vibrational entropic term of CO$_2$ might extravagantly affect on the entropic-selectivity.
