  • Over-coating is one of the most popular engineering practices to strengthen Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures, due to the relative quickness and ease of construction. It consists of an external coat bonded to the outer surface of the structural RC element, either by the use of chemical adhesives, mechanical anchor bolts or simply mortar injection. In contrast to these constructive advantages, the numerical estimation of the bearing capacity of the strengthened reinforced concrete element is still complicated, not only for the complexity of modelling a flexible membrane or plate attached to a quasi-rigid solid, but also for the difficulties that raise of simulating any potential delamination between both materials. For these reasons, the standard engineering calculations used in the practice remain very approximated and clumsy. In this work, we propose the formulation of a new 2D solid-layer finite element capable to link a solid body with a flexible thin layer, as it were the "skin" of the body, allowing the potential delamination between both materials. In numerical terms, this "skin" element is intended to work as a transitional region between a solid body (modelled with a classical formulation of a standard quadrilateral four-nodes element) and a flexible coat layer (modelled with cubic beam element), dealing with the incompatibility of Degrees-OfFreedom between them (two DOF for the solid and three DOF for the beam). The aim of the solid-layer element is to simplify the mesh construction of the strengthened RC element being aware of two aspects: a) to prevent the inappropriate use of very small solid elements to simulate the coat; b) to improve the numerical estimation of the real bearing capacity of the strengthened element when the coat is attached or detached from the solid body.

  • In this study, a model test was conducted using the soft-mooring technique to evaluate the added resistance of the ship in waves. The study also examined the specific factors that should be considered during the soft-mooring test. The main purpose of soft-mooring is to prevent drifting caused by waves by providing horizontal restoring forces. However, it can also create undesired restoring forces in the vertical direction. Therefore, we examined the restoring force of the ship's 6-DOF motion based on the arrangement of the soft-mooring and the height of the mooring connection point. We also checked the corresponding resonance period and drift distance. The soft-mooring test was conducted twice, once with self-propulsion and once without self-propulsion, allowing us to review the advantages and disadvantages of each test technique. The main parameters measured in these model tests were 6DOF motion and added resistance on the ship. We compared these measurements obtained from two different techniques (with and without self-propulsion). Additionally, we also compared the measurements based on the types of measuring sensors used (2D load cells on FP, AP, and 1D load cells on each mooring line) as well as the height of the mooring connection point.

  • In this study, a simulation tool is developed in order to investigate non steady-state cornering performance of 6WD/6WS special-purpose vehicles. 6WD vehicles are believed to have good performance on off-the-road maneuvering and to have fail-safe capabilities. But the cornering performances of 6WS vehicles are not well understood in the related literature. In this paper, 6WD/6WS vehicles are modeled as a 18 DOF system which includes non-linear vehicle dynamics, tire models, and kinematic effects. Then the vehicle model is constructed into a simulation tool using the MATLAB /SIMULINK so that input/output and vehicle parameters can be changed easily with the modulated approach. Cornering performance of the 6WS vehicle is analyzed for brake steering and pivoting, respectively. Simulation results show that cornering performance depends on the middle-wheel steering as well as front/rear wheel steering. In addition, a new 6WS control law is proposed in order to minimize the sideslip angle. Lane change simulation results demonstrate the advantage of 6WS vehicles with the proposed control law.

  • In this paper, a fully adaptive feedforward feedback synchronized tracking control approach is developed for precision tracking control of 6 degree of freedom (6DOF) Stewart Platform. The proposed controller is designed in decentralized form for implementation simplicity. Interconnections among different subsystems and gravity effect are eliminated by the feedforward control action. Feedback control action guarantees the stability of the system. The gains of the proposed controller can be updated on line without requiring any prior knowledge of Stewart Platform manipulator. Thus the control approach is claimed to be fully adaptive. By employing cross-coupling error technology, the proposed approach can guarantee both of position error and synchronization error converge to zero asymptotically. Because the actuators work in synchronous manner, the tracking performances are improved. The corresponding stability analysis is also presented in this paper. Finally, simulation is demonstrated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • A guidance scheme that is suitable for controlling the aircraft flight path is proposed. The concept of miss distance which is commonly used in the missile guidance laws, and Lyapunov stability theorem are effectively combined to obtain the aircraft's trajectory-tracking guidance law. Guidance commands are given in terms of speed and flight path angles, but they perfectly reflect any position and velocity errors between real aircraft trajectory and reference one. The proposed guidance law is easily integrated into the existing flight control system. The new guidance law was extensively tested with various mission scenarios and the fully nonlinear 6-DOF aircraft model. Furthermore, the new guidance law was compared with previous guidance schemes in nonlinear simulation. Results from the numerical simulation show that the proposed guidance law yields better performance than previous ones.

  • Parallel link manipulators have an ability of more precise positioning than serial open-loop manipulators. However. general parallel link manipulators have been restricted to the real applications since they have limited workspace due to interference among actuators. In this study, we suggest a closed-loop manipulator with 6 degrees-of-freedom and with enlarged workspace. It consists of two parts for minimizing the interference among actuators. One part is lower structure with planar 3 degrees-of-freedom and the other is upper one with spatial 3 degrees-of-freedom. Forward kinematics and inverse kinematics are solved, research about singularity points are carried out and workspace is evaluated. The comparison of workspace between Stewart platform, which is the typical parallel link manipulator, and the suggested manipulator shows that the workspace of the latter is wider than that of the former. Especially, simulation results also show that the suggested manipulator is more suitable when there needs rotation in the end-effector.

  • An electro-hydraulic manipulator using hydraulic actuators has many nonlinear abetments, and its parameter fluctuations are greater than those of an electrically driven manipulator. So it is relatively difficult to realize not only stable but also accurate trajectory control for the autonomous assembly tasks using hydraulic manipulators. In this report, we propose a two-degree-of-freedom control including parallel feedforward compensator (PFC) where PFC plays a very important role in the stability of a proposed control system. In the experimental results of the 6-link electro hydraulic manipulator, it is verified that the stability and the model matching performance are improved by using the proposed control method.
