  • The Chinese Library Classification(CLC) is the most widely used national standard classification system in China. Since the first edition of CLC in 1975, the 5th edition of CLC was published in 2010. It was the result of an average of 9 years of revision for each edition. This study investigated CLC focusing on the formational background and developmental process of CLC, and characteristics and revision details of CLC's 5th edition. Because Korea has been close cultural relationship with China for a long time, this study will provide implications on Korean Decimal Classification(KDC) development.

  • The purposes of this study are to review the historical development of food and culture in the KDC (Korean Decimal Classification) and to propose improvements of the KDC to classify materials of food and culture by using the KDC effectively. First of all, changes of classification numbers and headings related to food and culture from the 1st edition to the 5th edition of the KDC were examined. Recent books about food and culture were examined and were classified according to the latest edition of the KDC. Several problems were found including a lack of headings, including notes in food and culture, a lack of headings about Korean foods in particular and reflections about various foods from other countries, a lack of detailed relative headings, and the remaining western oriented headings. Other classification systems about food and culture were analyzed and it was found that there was a need to have new headings for classifying Korean traditional foods and table services, new formats for a relative index, detailed notes, and changes in western oriented headings.

  • This paper is intended to comparatively analyzed the KDC/NDC/DDC classification system for the field of civil engineering, the research field classification system of National Research Foundation of Korea, and the science and technology research field classification system of Korea Science and Engineering Foundation. And based on the analysis, it tried to propose the ways of improving the KDC classification system for the civil engineering field. As a result of the analysis, this paper has found that the KDC 5th-edition for the civil engineering field needed some corrections. That is, the classification items that reflect the trend of academic development should be added, the classification terminology of the basic theories of civil engineering should be properly developed, segmented topics should be added, any errors in classification codes and Korean/English descriptions should be corrected, and the omission of the KDC relative index of classification items should be solved. This paper proposed the ways of improving those problems.

  • This study is to suggest ways to supplement terms and notes in the field of parapsychology and occultism in the KDC 6th edition. In order to this study, the comparative analysis of KDC and DDC analyzed the classification system and change process of classification items, classified data in parapsychology and occultism. Based on this, the analysis academic characteristics and problems of parapsychology and occultism field were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the lack of notes and inadequacy of terms caused confusion in classification, to solve this problem, this study suggests the solution of adding notes of sub-items, changing term of 187.2, 187.3, 187.4, 187.5.

Especially it analyzes the related classes of specified areas (branch sociology) of sociology including those of arts and sports, sciences, languages, society, region, etc. class by class. In this analysis two systems show many differences in the classes included and in the locations of some classes. This analysis can be useful for the future revision of KDC.

  • This study suggests an improvement and modification plan for KDC's architecture field after comparing and analyzing KDC, DDC, NDC, the Research Field Classification System, and the National S&T Standard Classification System of the National Research Foundation of Korea. This study suggests, through the cooperative study of researchers from classification and those from construction, that it would be better to integrate 610 architecture into 540 architecture engineering and to change the heading of 540 from "Architecture engineering" to "Architecture". The study also newly creates several subdivisions, 540.1 Architecture Plan including its subdivisions, 543.1 Structural Mechanics, and 546.1 Architectural Environment including its subdivisions.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the classification focused on KDC 4th edition for children's materials. For the study, literature study, KDC application and user survey in 51 libraries for children were performed. Based on the results, classification for children's materials is proposed to improve in two ways: classification system itself and arrangement in the shelf. First of all, it is required to scatter the subjects that are centered on specific numbers and to allow various types, characteristics and literature genre of children's materials to be classified in KDC. KDC also should provide specific notes and classification guidelines for interdisciplinary subjects. In the shelf arrangement, it is proposed to consider the introduction of user-friendly call number and arrangement principles by ages or titles. In the end, it is necessary to compose various collections that represent users' needs, and the user education program is needed.

  • Recently, information on international trade goes on increasing in quantity because of the globalism and many related areas of the field. Most of libraries and informatin centers in Korea are using Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC), Library of congress Classification(LCC), and Korean Decimal Classification(KDC) to classify library materials on the subject. The application of three classification shcemes, DDC, LCC, and KDC were queried to determine the classification of materials on international trade. And analyses of the parts of international trade in three classification shemes were done in order to identify what major changes have made with the development of the field. There was subject scatter in DDC and LCC; there was an overlap among the classes of the three systems; and there was little change between present editions and the previous editions. The revision for international trade field of the KDC, the 4t edtition was suggested to help cover some deficiencies of the classification scheme. Inorder to develop a better KDC, the 5th edition, continuous revisions based upon the opinions of subject specialists and catalogers in the field are highly recommended.
