  • The welding workers are frequently exposed to heavy metals such as manganese. Manganese is well evaporated into the air while welding. This study had been carried out to investigate the relationship of the blood manganese level to age, work duration, and smoking status among 128 welding workers in Gyeongnam and Jeonnam province from May to November, 2003. They showed high manganese level in the first health examination. Subjects were also classified for the investigation according to their smoking status as smokers and nonsmokers, work duration ($\leq$9, 10~9, 20$\leq$years), and ages ($\leq$29, 30~39, 40~49, 50$\leq$years). Blood manganese Jevels were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Mean blood manganese level was 1.62$\pm$0.56 $\mu\textrm{g}$/dl. In the comparison of blood manganese levels by age and smoking status, mean blood manganese levels of smokers in age of 20's, 30's, and 50's were 2.09$\pm$0.44 $\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 1.94$\pm$0.33 $\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, and 2.l5$\pm$0.33 $\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, respectively. Blood manganese levels of smokers were significantly higher than those of non-smokers, showing no significant difference in the 40's. In the comparison of blood manganese levels by work duration, the blood manganese levels of smokers were the highest in the case of 10 to 19 years work duration. This study showed that the blood manganese levels were related to the smoking status, work duration, and age. Mean manganese levels of smokers showed higher than those of nonsmokers. It also showed that the length of work duration was related to the elevation of blood manganese levels. Among the welding workers, blood manganese levels of smokers were the highest over their age of 50's. In conclusion, smoking was the most significant risk factor to increase blood manganese levels. The further study will need analysis of the other factors related to manganese level elevation.

  • Finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental studies on an elastic bending method have been performed in order to control the angular distortion at the fillet weldment for curved panel. Process parameters for the elastic bending method such as clamping span and release time were analyzed with reference to welding condition and geometric effect of the curved panel, which can minimize or prevent the angular distortion by producing a proper skin stress to the fillet weldment. The amounts of the angular distortion decrease almost in a linear manner with an increase in the skin stress. The skin stress required for non-angular distortion at the fillet weldment is strongly dependent on the plate thickness, not the heat intensity applied. The clamping span for obtaining uniform skin stress was defined as functions of the plate thickness and length of the free edge. Clamp should be removed after the fillet weldment is cooled down to room temperature for non-angular distortion. Effectiveness of the elastic bending method established was verified by its application to an actual curved panel.

  • Generally the factors affected largely by the cold cracking sensitivity of the weld are the quantity of the diffusible hydrogen, the brittleness and hardness of the bond area and the tensile restraint stress. These factors have relation each other, and if we can reduce one of these factors, it becomes instrumental to the root cracks prevention of weld. This study deals with the gravity type-underwater-welding of KR Grade A-3 marine steel plate using E4303 welding electrode in order to compare wet-underwater-welding with in-air- welding, resulting in obtaining the tensile restraint characteristics, the hardness distribution, the quantity of diffusible hydrogen and the macro- and micro-crack properties in both underwater and in-air welds. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) The quantity of diffusible hydrogen measured for 48 hours is about 18cc/100g-weld-metal for the in-air-weld of one pass and about 48cc/100g-weld-metal for the underwater-weld of one pass which is about 3 times penetration of diffusible hydrogen compairing with the case of the in-air-weld. However, it was experimentally confirmed that, by the multi-pass welding of 2 to 5 passes, the diffusible hydrogen in the underwater weld metal can be reduced as much as 27 to 49%. 2) The hardness of the weld metal indicates the highest value in the heat affected zones of underwater weld for more rapid cooling rate, resulting in the higher sensitivity of cold cracking. So, it is desirable to soften the higher hardness in the HAZ by tempering effect such as the multi-pass welding in the underwater welding. 3) At the bond vicinity of the underwater weld HAZ, micro cracks were found as resulted by both more rapid cooling rate and more diffusible hydrogen and also by the stress corrosion cracking under the tensile restraint stress in the underwater. But this could be prevented by the tempering effect of the following weld bead such as the multi-pass welding.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of welding residual stresses on the fatigue crack growth behavior of cracks located transverse to the weld bead. For this purpose, G. T. A (Gas Tungsten Arc) welding was performed on hte Al alloy 1100-O plate and the same initial crack is made on HAZ(Heat Affected Zone), weld metal and base meta respectively. Specimens were used CT(Compact Tension) specimens. Initial welding residual stresses were measured by using strai gage sectioning method. All specimens were tested under constant amplitude load with stress ratio R=0.1, It is possible to predict fatigue crack growth behaviors and the fatigue life, using numerical analysis together with distribution of initial residual stress and the values of C and m obtained from $da/dN-{\Delta}K$

  • In recent automotive industry, vehicle weight can be reduced by one-step forming of tailored blanks welded with two or more sheets of metal blanks. Tailored blank(TB) welding is a production method for blanks involving welding together materials of different quality, thickness, and coating, and has proved popular in fabrication automotive parts. This paper deals with the forming characteristics of mash seam welded tailored blanks. Using these forming characteristics, the bumper beam was developed using the mash seam welded tailored blank with the different thickness. We performed the forming simulation with respect to strain distribution on blank during the stamping of the bumper rail part. Based on these results, we made some stamping tryouts with selected types of blank designs to investigate the formability of tailored blank with different thickness. During the tryouts, we knew that it was important the BHF(Blank Holding Force). We obtained to reducing 10.5% weight and cost with adapting the bumper beam of automotive component using the tailored blank of mash seam welding.

  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of compounded welding by using acoustic emission (AE) signals and doing a source location for weld heat affected zone (HAZ) through tensile testing. This study was carried out an SWS 490A high strength steel for electric shield metal arc welding, SMAW; $CO_2$ gas metal arc welding, GMAW($CO_2$); and gas tungsten arc welding, GTAW/TIG. Data displays are based on the measured parameters of the AE signals, along with environmental variables such as time and load. For instance, Gutenberg-Richter magnitude-frequency relationship (G-R MFR) offers useful b-value in data analysis. Namely event identification, source location gives the X- and Y-coordinates of the AE source. And K-means clustering analysis by Euclidean distance confirmed that was powerful to source location. Generally, strength of welded metal zone was stronger than strength of base metal. As the result, confirmed certainly that fracture is produced in HAZ instead of welded metal zone from source location.

  • The effects of welding parameters such as contact tip-to-work distance (CTWD), voltage, and current on the weld metal diffusible hydrogen contents (HD) were investigated and rationalized by the calculation of heating time and amount of heat generated in the extension length of flux cored wire. As CTWD increased from 15 to 25mm, HD decreased from 8.46 to 5.45mL/100g deposited metal. Calculations showed that, with an increase of CTWD, the amount of heat generated increased from 46 to 92J in addition to an increase of heating time. Increase of current from 250 to 320A, however, gave little variation of HD. It showed that no significant change in the amount of heat generated was found, and heating time was decreased with an increase of current. It also showed that CTWD is more influential than voltage in relatively lower heat input ranges, while voltage is more in higher input ranges

  • This paper deals with the optimum condition for spot heating to correct the thin buckled panel caused by welding. Heat input models for each flame torch tip (500, 800, 2000) with standoff were establish using FEA to evaluate the temperature distribution of the heated plate and verified by experiment. With the heat input models developed for each torch tip, the effect of heating variables including ramp ratio(R) and standoff on the radial shrinkage and angular distortion was identified using FEA. Based on the results, the proper conditions of spot heating with air cooling were established. The amount and distribution of the radial shrinkage by spot heating were formulated as the function of heating variables and in-plane rigidity of the plate.
