  • Recently, smaller and lighter products have become of interest in industry applications that increasingly demand thin plate joints of thickness 1.0 mm or less using friction stir welding. In this study, high frequency spindles that run at 3,500-6,500 rpm are introduced for thin friction stir-welded plates. Weldability tests are performed for the butt-joint method of Al5052-H32 alloy of 1.0 mm thickness under 3,500-6,500 rpm spindle revolution with 250-400 mm/min feed speed. An optical microscope was used to analyze the bid structure of the welded zone and stir zone. The tensile-strength and hardness of the welded zone were then measured.

  • In this study, various electrochemical experiments were carried out to compare the corrosion characteristics of AA5052-O, AA5083-H321 and AA6061-T6 in seawater. The electrochemical impedance and potentiostatic polarization measurements showed that the corrosion resistance is decreased in the order of AA5052-O, AA5083-H321 and AA6061-T6, with AA5052-O being the highest resistant. This is closely associated with the property of passive film formed on three tested Al alloys. Based on the slope of Mott-Schottky plots of an n-type semiconductor, the density of oxygen vacancies in the passive film formed on the alloys was determined. This revealed that the defect density is increased in the order of AA5052-O, AA5083-H321 and AA6061-T6. Considering these facts, it is implied that the addition of Mg, Si, and Cu to the Al alloys can degrade the passivity, which is characterized by a passive film structure containing more defect sites, contributing to the decrease in corrosion resistance in seawater.

  • A cold roll-bonding process is applied to fabricate an AA6061/AA5052/AA6061/AA5052 layered sheet. Two AA6061 and one AA5052 sheets of 2mm thickness, 40mm width and 300mm length are alternately stacked, then reduced to a thickness of 2.0 mm by multi-pass cold rolling after surface treatment such as degreasing and wire brushing. The rolling is performed at ambient temperature without lubricant using a 2-high mill with a roll diameter of 400 mm at a rolling speed of 6.0 m/sec. The roll-bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA6061/AA5052 layered sheet is then hardened by natural aging (T4) and artificial aging (T6) treatments. The microstructure of the as-roll bonded and the age-hardened Al sheets was revealed by SEM observation; the mechanical properties were investigated by tensile testing and hardness testing. After T4 and T6 aging treatment, the specimens had a recrystallization structure consisting of coarse equiaxed grains in both AA5052 and AA6061 regions. The as-roll-bonded specimen showed a clad structure in which the hardness of AA5052 regions was higher than that of AA6061 regions. However, after T4 and T6 aging treatment, specimens exhibited different structures, with hardness of AA6061 regions higher than that of AA5052 regions. Strengths of T6 and T4 age-treated specimens were found to increase by 1.55 and 1.36 times, respectively, compared to the value of the starting material.

  • The effect of annealing temperature on microstructures and mechanical properties of the sheets received $88\%$ reduction at cryogenic temperature was investigated for the annealing temperature of $150\~300^{\circ}C$, in comparison with those at room temperature. The presence of equiaxed grains, whose size is about 200nm in a diameter, was observed in 5052 Al alloy deformed $88\%$ and annealed $200^{\circ}C$ for an hour. When compared with the deformation at room temperature, the deformation at cryogenic temperature showed the higher strengths and equivalent elongation after annealing at the annealing temperature below $200^{\circ}C$. However, for annealing above $250^{\circ}C$ materials deformed at cryogenic temperature showed the lower strength than those deformed at room temperature. This behavior might be attributed to the higher rate of recrystallization and growth in materials deformed at cryogenic temperature during annealing, due to the lager density of dislocations accumulated during the deformation.

  • The article aims to apply a friction stir spot welding for producing the lap joint between AA5052 aluminum alloy and C11000 copper alloy. The dimension of the materials was 100 mm in length, 30 mm in width and 1.0 mm in thickness. The copper plate was set overlap the aluminum plate by 30 mm. The welding parameter was the rotating speed of 2500-4000 rpm, the pin inserting rate of 2-8 mm/min and the holding time of 6 sec. The mechanical properties test and the microstructure investigation were performed to evaluate the lap joint quality. The summarized results are as follows. The friction stir spot welding could produce effectively the lap joint between AA5052 and C11000 copper. Increase of the rotating speed and holding time directly affected to decrease the tensile shear strength of the lap joint. The optimized welding parameters in this study that indicated the tensile shear strength of 864 N was the rotating speed of 3500 rpm, the pin inserting rate of 6 mm/min and the holding time of 4sec. The experimental results also showed that the hardness of the weld metal was lower than that of the base materials.

  • The cavity formed by the ultrasonic generation in the fluid with the application of water cavitation peening collides into the metal surface. At this time, the surface modification effect such as the work hardening presents by the compressive residual stress formed due to the localized plastic deformation. In this investigation, the water cavitation peening technology in the distilled water with the lapse of time was applied to 5052-O aluminum alloy for aluminum ship of a high value. So, the optimum water cavitation peening time on the effect for surface hardening and anti-corrosion property was investigated. Consequently, the water cavitatin peening time on excellent hardness and corrosion resistance characteristic presented 3.5 min. and 5.0 min, respectively. The surface hardness in the optimum water cavitation peening time was improved approximately 45% compared to the non-WCPed condition. In addition, corrosion current density was decreased.

  • A cold roll-bonding process using AA1050, AA5052 and AA6061 alloy sheets is performed without lubrication. The roll-bonded specimen is a multi-layer complex aluminum alloy sheet in which the AA1050, AA5052 and AA6061 sheets are alternately stacked. The microstructural evolution with the increase of annealing temperature for the roll-bonded aluminum sheet is investigated in detail. The roll-bonded aluminum sheet shows a typical deformation structure in which the grains are elongated in the rolling direction over all regions. However, microstructural evolution of the annealed specimen is different depending on the type of material, resulting in a heterogeneous microstructure in the thickness direction of the layered aluminum sheet. Complete recrystallization occurs at 250 ℃ in the AA5052 region, which is lower by 100K than that of the AA1050 region. Variation of the misorientation angle distribution and texture development with increase of annealing temperature also differ depending on the type of material. Differences of microstructural evolution between aluminum alloys with increase of annealing temperature can be mainly explained in terms of amounts of impurities and initial grain size.

  • In the study, corrosion characteristics of AZ31 magnesium alloy under various environments exposed during machining(immersion in cutting oil, 5 % cutting oil aqueous solution and distilled water & contact with dissimilar metals, SPC4 and A5052-H32) were investigated. A corrosion test was performed AZ31 magnesium alloy was immersed in each electrolyte solution after contacting with each dissimilar metals, and the results were observed by an electron microscope. In immersion tests, corrosion of AZ31 magnesium alloy showed to be in the sequence of distilled water> 5 % cutting oil aqueous solution> cutting oil> air, and in the test of contact with dissimilar metals, corrosion showed to be in the sequence of SPC4> A5052-H32> AZ31. It can be concluded that to prevent corrosion during machining, AZ31 magnesium alloy must prevent contacting water and use magnesium alloy for raw material of Jig & Fixture.

  • Drawability and other mechanical properties of sheet metals are strongly dependent on their crystallographic orientations. In this paper the formability of the AA 5052 Al alloy sheets was investigated after asymmetric rolling and subsequent heat treatment. In most cases, after asymmetric rolling specimens showed a fine grain size and subsequent heat treated specimens showed that the ND//<111> texture component were observed. The anisotropy of formability is often described by the plastic strain ratios (r-value) as a function of the angle to the rolling direction in sheet metal. For a good formability, a high r-value is required in sheet metals. In the asymmetry rolled and subsequent heat treated Al alloy sheet, the variation of the plastic strain ratios have been investigated in this study. The plastic strain ratios of the asymmetry rolled and subsequent heat treated AA 5052 Al alloy sheets were higher than those of the original Al sheets. These could be related to the formation of ND//<111> texture components through asymmetric rolling in Al sheet.
