Fracture mode of friction spot joined Aluminum alloy used in automobile industry (마찰교반 점용접(FSJ)을 이용한 자동차용 Al 합금의 파단특성)

  • Friction Spot Joining(FSJ) has a strong potential for aluminum alloy joining in automobile industries. The present paper focuses on the attempt to optimize the FSJ process for lap joining of A5052-H32 and A6061-T6 aluminum alloys. For A5052 maximum tensile shear strength has been observed for a tool rotating speed of 800rpm and for A6061 at 1000 rpm. Study on fracture modes of the tensile tested specimens of both A5052-H32 and A6061-T6 revealed, for high tensile strength values, plug fracture mode and lower tensile values, shear fracture mode. Above 2000 rpm distortion of the base metal, beside the tool shoulder was larger and plug fracture mode has been observed.

  • Fatigue crack propagation behavior for block load in high strength aluminum alloys was investigated in this study. The materials used in this study are aluminum alloy 5052-H32. Initial crack was made by applying cyclic load to a through crack with chevron notch. Crack length was measured from calibration curve, which was plotted by known crack length and resistance of standard specimens. Load was obtained from linear regression formula. Unloading elastic compliance method was applied to check the crack closure and cracked area. The present study results can be usefully applied to predicting the change of crack propagation rate, the crack closure, and the delay of crack propagation.

  • In order to investigate the effect of surface treatment(Anodizing) and rolling in Al 5083-H131 alloy, ballistic testing was conducted. Ballistic resistance of these materials. was measured by protection ballistic limit(V$_{50}$), a statical velocity with 50% probability for incomplete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are observed respectfully, resulting from V$_{50}$ test and Projectile Through Plates(PTP) test at velocities greater than V$_{50}$. PTP tests were conducted with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature were also conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Resistance to penetration, and penetration modes of Al 5052-H34 alloy, compared to those of Al 5083-H131 alloy.alloy.

  • For manufacturing modern cars, so-called multi-materials, such as aluminum alloy with high-strength steels, are used. For obtaining such materials, a new joining method is required to achieve the multi-material design. Mechanical clinching is one of joining methods used to join the dissimilar materials. The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of mechanical clinching of Al5052 alloy to high-strength steels (SPFC440, 590, 780). Using FE-analysis and clinching experiment, the joinability of Al5052 alloy to high-strength steel is evaluated by geometrical shape of mechanical clinched joint, such as neck-thickness and undercut. Further, the joint strength is evaluated by performing a single-lap shear test. The upper high-strength steel SPFC780 was not clinched because of the necking of the upper sheet. The joint strength increased with increasing strength of the upper sheet. For the lower high-strength steel sheet, the joinability and joint strength decreased with increasing strength of the lower sheet.

A Study on tho Effcct of Strcss Ratio on Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior (피로성장거동의 응력비 영향에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, a crack closure behavior of Al-alloy 5052-H38 was investigated. The fatigue test was performed by the four-point bending test under the contast amplitude load. Stress ratio R was changed from-1.0 to 0.5. To mcasure the fatigue crack opening point, the graph of load vs. subtracted displacement by computer program was obtained from the X - Y plotter. In order to gain the displacement data, a strain gage was attached at the back surface against the notched side. Uslng the conception of crack closure and influence of on crack growth rate a model for crack growth rate is developed for Al-alloy 5052-H38.

  • In an attempt to optimize friction spot joining process of Al alloys for automobiles, Friction spot joining was used make lap feint on strips of AA5052-H32 and AA6022-T4 aluminium alloy. The effects of joining parameters such as tool rotating speed, plunging depth, joining time and kind of upper plate on the joints properties were investigated. An optimal tensile shear strength parameter of a tool rotating speed of 1000rpm, dwell time 2.5sec with upper plate 6022 can be found to make a good joint.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of AA6061/AA5052/AA1050 Alloy Fabricated by Cold Roll-Bonding and Subsequently Annealed

  • Changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-roll-bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA1050 three-layered sheet with increasing annealing temperature were investigated in detail. The commercial AA6061, AA5052 and AA1050 sheets with 2 mm thickness were roll-bonded by multi-pass rolling at ambient temperature. The roll-bonded Al sheets were then annealed for 1 h at various temperatures from 200 to 400 ℃. The specimens annealed up to 250 ℃ showed a typical deformation structure where the grains are elongated in the rolling direction in all regions. However, after annealing at 300 ℃, while AA6061 and AA1050 regions still retained the deformation structure, but AA5052 region changed into complete recrystallization. For all the annealed materials, the fraction of high angle grain boundaries was lower than that of low angle grain boundaries. In addition, while the rolling texture of the {110}<112> and {123}<634> components strongly developed in the AA6061 and AA1050 regions, in the AA5052 region the recrystallization texture of the {100}<001> component developed. After annealing at 350 ℃ the recrystallization texture developed in all regions. The as-rolled material exhibited a relatively high tensile strength of 282 MPa and elongation of 18 %. However, the tensile strength decreased and the elongation increased gradually with the increase in annealing temperature. The changes in mechanical properties with increasing annealing temperature were compared with those of other three-layered Al sheets fabricated in previous studies.

  • Friction stir welding is a relatively new solid state joining process. A6061-T6 and A5052-H32 aluminium alloy has gathered wide acceptance in the fabrication of light weight structures requiring a high strength to weight ratio and good corrosion resistance. This friction stir process uses a non-consumable tool to generate frictional heat in the abutting surfaces. The welding parameters such as tool rotational speed, welding speed, etc., and tool pin profile play a major role in deciding FSP zone formation in A6061-T6 and A5052-H32 aluminium alloy. Three different tool pin profiles have been used to fabricate the dissimilar butt joints. The formation of friction stir processed zone has been analysed macroscopically. Tensile properties of the joints have been evaluated and correlated with the friction stir processed zone formation.

Investigation on surface hardening and corrosion characteristic by water cavitation peening with time for Al 5052-O alloy (5052-O 알루미늄 합금의 워터 캐비테이션 피닝 시간에 따른 표면 경화와 부식 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The cavity formed by the ultrasonic generation in the fluid with the application of water cavitation peening collides into the metal surface. At this time, the surface modification effect such as the work hardening presents by the compressive residual stress formed due to the localized plastic deformation. In this investigation, the water cavitation peening technology in the distilled water with the lapse of time was applied to 5052-O aluminum alloy for aluminum ship of a high value. So, the optimum water cavitation peening time on the effect for surface hardening and anti-corrosion property was investigated. Consequently, the water cavitatin peening time on excellent hardness and corrosion resistance characteristic presented 3.5 min. and 5.0 min, respectively. The surface hardness in the optimum water cavitation peening time was improved approximately 45% compared to the non-WCPed condition. In addition, corrosion current density was decreased.

Evaluation of weldability of Al 6061 and 5052 alloy by using GMAW and Plasma-GMA welding (GMAW, Plasma-GMA Hybrid 용접을 이용한 Al 5052, 6061 합금의 용접성 평가)

  • 알루미늄 합금은 질량 대비 강도가 우수하고 내식성 및 저온 특성이 양호하여 구조재로서 널리 사용되고 있다. 또한 그 사용 추세가 점점 증가 하고 있으며 알루미늄 합금의 용접을 위해 현재까지 다양한 용접 공정이 적용되었다. 일반적으로 GMAW, GTAW 등의 아크 용접과 박판의 경우 저항 점용접, 그 외의 $CO_2$ laser, Nd:YAG laser와 같은 고밀도 에너지 용접 공정에 의한 연구 결과들이 많이 발표 되었다. 하지만 알루미늄 합금의 특성 상 용접부에 기공과 균열과 같은 결함들이 각 공정에서 많이 발생하며 이러한 결함을 감소시키기 위한 용접기술에 관해 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 GMAW, Plasma-GMAW 공정을 적용하여 알루미늄 합금의 용접특성을 비교하였다. 알루미늄 합금 Al 5052, Al 6061 4mm 두께 모재에 대해 BOP(Bead On Plate) 용접실험을 실시하였으며 생산성 측면에서 각 공정에 따라 완전 용입 시 최대 용접 속도를 측정하여 비교하였다. 용접 품질 측면에서는 비드 표면 및 단면을 검사하고 인장시험을 수행하였으며, 용접 기공과 균열을 X-ray 촬영을 통해 비교하였다. 또한 고속카메라 촬영을 통해 용접 중 플라즈마로 인한 산화막 제거 효과를 확인하고 각 공정별 용접 시작부의 아크 안정성을 평가하였다. 인장시험 결과 모든 모드에서 모재에서 파단됨을 확인 하였고, Plasma-GMAW 공정의 경우 플라즈마의 예열효과로 인하여 GMAW 보다 완전용입 기준 용접속도가 빨랐으며, 청정작용도 우수한 것으로 확인되었다.
