Variable Time-Scale Modification with Voiced/Unvoiced Decision (유/무성음 결정에 다른 가변적인 시간축 변환)

  • In this paper, a variable time-scale modification using SOLA(Synchronized OverLap and Add) is proposed, which takes into consideration the different time-scaled characteristics of voiced and unvoiced speech, Generally, voiced speech is subject to higher variations in length during time-scale modification than unvoiced speech, but the conventional method performs time-scale modification at a uniform rate for all speech. For this purpose, voiced and unvoiced speech duration at various talking speeds were statistically analyzed. The sentences were then spoken at rates of 0.7, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.8 times normal speed. A clipping autocorrelation function was applied to each analysis frame to determine voiced and unvoiced speech to obtain respective variation rates. The results were used to perform variable time-scale modification to produce sentences at rates of 0.7, 1.3, 1.5, 1.8 times normal speed. To evaluate performance, a MOS test was conducted to compare the proposed voiced/unvoiced variable time-scale modification and the uniform SOLA method. Results indicate that the proposed method produces sentence quality superior to that of the conventional method.

A Practical Hull Form Optimization Method Using the Parametric Modification Function (파라메트릭 변환함수를 이용한 선형최적화의 실용화에 관한 연구)

  • A geometry modification is one of main keys in achieving a successful optimization. The optimized hull form generated from the geometry modification should be a realistic, faired form from the ship manufacturing point of view. This paper presents a practical hull optimization procedure using a parametric modification function. In the parametric modification function method, the initial ship geometry was easily deformed according to the variations of design parameters. For example, bulbous bow can be modified with several parameters such as bulb area, bulb length, bulb height etc. Design parameters are considered as design variables to modify hull form, which can reduce the number of design variables in optimization process and hence reduce its time cost. To verify the use of the parametric modification function, optimization for KCS was performed at its design speed (FN=0.26) and the wave making resistance is calculated using a well proven potential code with fully nonlinear free surface conditions. The design variables used are key design parameters such as Cp curve, section shape and bulb shape. This study shows that the hull form optimized by the parametric modification function brings 7.6% reduction in wave making resistance. In addition, for verification and comparison purpose, a direct geometry variation method using a bell-shape modification function is used. It is shown that the optimal hull form generated by the bell-shaped modification function is very similar to that produced by the parametric modification function. However, the total running time of the parametric optimization is six times shorter than that of the bell shape modification method, showing the effectiveness and practicalness from a designer point of view in ship yards.

Changes in Pasting and Fluid Properties of Corn and Rice Starches after Physical Modification by Planetary Mill

  • Com and rice starches were physically modified by planetary mill. While native starches showed high peak viscosities (1,001 and 563 cp), it decreased largely (42 and 20 cp for rice and com starch, respectively) after 2 hr of physical modification. When two starches were co-ground, peak viscosities decreased more largely than single ground one only in 30 min, indicating the pasting properties could be easily changed by co-grinding. Especially, the higher the amount of com starch, the viscosity decreased more largely, which means that paste stability could be controlled also by changing the ratio of com and rice starch. Mean particle size increased with physical modification time since particles became spread because of shear force. There were also changes in surface morphology after physical modification. Fluid property, such as mean time to avalanche (MTA), was improved (from $6.16{\pm}0.47$ and $8.37{\pm}1.23\;sec$ to $5.47{\pm}0.78$ and $5.26{\pm}1.37\;sec$ for rice and com starch, respectively) by physical modification. Pasting property, such as swelling power, was also improved by physical modification. These mean that native starches can be applied to both conventional powder and new paste-food industry more efficiently by physical modification.

Study on the Response Modification Factor for a Lightweight Steel Panel-Modular Structure Designed as a Dual Frame System (이중골조시스템으로 설계된 복강판-모듈러 구조물의 반응수정계수에 관한 연구)

  • In this present study, a response modification factor for a lightweight steel panel-modular system which is not clarified in a current building code was proposed. As a component of the response modification factor, an over-strength factor and a ductility factor were drawn from the nonlinear static analysis curves of the systems modeled on the basis of the performance tests. The final response modification factor was then computed by modifying the previous response modification factor with a MDOF (Multi-Degree-Of-Freedom) base shear modification factor considering the MDOF dynamic behaviors. As a result of computation for the structures designed as a dual frame system, ranging from 2-story to 5-story, the value of 4 was estimated as a final response modification factor for a seismic design, considering the value of 5 as an upper limit of the number of stories.

Characteristics of Basalt Materials Derived from Recycling Steel Industry Slags (철강산업 슬래그를 이용하여 제조한 바잘트 소재의 특성)

  • In this study, Fe-Ni slag, converter slag and dephosphorization slag generated from the steel industry, and fly ash or bottom ash from a power plant, were mixed at an appropriate mixing ratio and melted in a melting furnace in a mass-production process for glass ceramics. Then, glass-ceramic products, having a basalt composition with $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO, MgO, and $Fe_2O_3$ components, were fabricated through casting and heat treatment process. Comparison was made of the samples before and after the modification of the process conditions. Glass-ceramic samples before and after the process modification were similar in chemical composition, but $Al_2O_3$ and $Na_2O$ contents were slightly higher in the samples before the modification. Before and after the process modification, it was confirmed that the sample had a melting temperature below $1250^{\circ}C$, and that pyroxene and diopside are the primary phases of the product. The crystallization temperature in the sample after modification was found to be higher than that in the sample before modification. The activation energy for crystallization was evaluated and found to be 467 kJ/mol for the sample before the process modification, and 337 kJ/mol for the sample after the process modification. The degree of crystallinity was evaluated and found to be 82 % before the process change and 87 % after the process change. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength and bending strength were evaluated and found to be excellent for the sample after process modification. In conclusion, the samples after the process modification were evaluated and found to have superior characteristics compared to those before the modification.

Chemical Modification of the Biodegradative Threonine Dehydratase from Serratia marcescens with Arginine and Lysine Modification Reagents

  • Biodegradative threonine dehydratase purified from Serratia marcescens ATCC 25419 was inactivated by the arginine specific modification reagent, phenylglyoxal (PGO) and the lysine modification reagent, pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP). The inactivation by PGO was protected by L-threonine and L-serine. The second order rate constant for the inactivation of the enzyme by PGO was calculated to be 136 $M^{-1}min^{-1}$. The reaction order with respect to PGO was 0.83. The inactivation of the enzyme by PGO was reversed upon addition of excess hydroxylamine. The inactivation of the enzyme by PLP was protected by L-threonine, L-serine, and a-aminobutyrate. The second order rate constant for the inactivation of the enzyme by PLP was 157 $M^{-1}min^{-1}$ and the order of reaction with respect to PLP was 1.0. The inactivation of the enzyme by PLP was reversed upon addition of excess acetic anhydride. Other chemical modification reagents such as N-ethylmaleimide, 5,5'-dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoate), iodoacetamide, sodium azide, phenylmethyl sulfonylfluoride and diethylpyrocarbonate had no effect on the enzyme activity. These results suggest that essential arginine and lysine residues may be located at or near the active site.

Analysis on the Home Modification related System for the Elderly (고령자 주택개조 관련 제도 현황 분석)

  • Implementing a home modification to enable elderly's safe and independent living is the key plan to realize their aging in place. South Korea in which had entered an aged society is not yet vitalized in home modification for the elderly compared to that of welfare-developed countries, and South Korea provides support that is limited to the low-income elderly. Therefore, this purpose of this study was to analyze the laws related to the home modification, the present condition of home modification support, the standards and guidelines in home modification, the support in house modification cost, and supporting organization and working force in the home modification. Through the analyzing process, this study examined the current situation and problems of institutional support in the home modification for elderly and the proposed plan for institutional improvement. The suggestions based on the results are as in the following. 1) Home modification support law(act or regulation) is required to be improved 2) Home modification support system correspondent to aging process should be provided regardless of their income levels. 3) Delicate plan standard and guideline are necessary for a process of implementing the home modification for the elderly. 4) Information on life behavior is in need for the implementation of elderly-customized home modification. 5) Cost for the home modification should be considered to cover by the Act on Long-Term Care Insurance for the Aged. 6) Housing Welfare Center and Housing Welfare Professional should be actively utilized for the home modification support institution and work force.

The interaction of Apolipoprotein A5 gene promoter region T-1131C polymorphism (rs12286037) and lifestyle modification on plasma triglyceride levels in Japanese

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Apolipoprotein A5 gene promoter region T-1131C polymorphism (APOA5 T-1131C) is known to be associated with elevated plasma TG levels, although little is known of the influence of the interaction between APOA5 T-1131C and lifestyle modification on TG levels. To investigate this matter, we studied APOA5 T-1131C and plasma TG levels of subjects participating in a three-month lifestyle modification program. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A three-month lifestyle modification program was conducted with 297 participants (Age: $57{\pm}8years$) in Izumo City, Japan, from 2001-2007. Changes in energy balance (the difference between energy intake and energy expenditure) and BMI were used to evaluate the participants' responses to the lifestyle modification. RESULTS: Even after adjusting for confounding factors, plasma TG levels were significantly different at baseline among three genotype subgroups: TT, $126{\pm}68mg/dl$; TC, $134{\pm}74mg/dl$; and CC, $172{\pm}101mg/dl$. Lifestyle modification resulted in significant reductions in plasma TG levels in the TT, TC, and CC genotype subgroups: $-21.9{\pm}61.0mg/dl$, $-20.9{\pm}51.0mg/dl$, and $-42.6{\pm}78.5mg/dl$, respectively, with no significant differences between them. In a stepwise regression analysis, age, APOA5 T-1131C, body mass index (BMI), homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and the 18:1/18:0 ratio showed independent association with plasma TG levels at baseline. In a general linear model analysis, APOA5 T-1131C C-allele carriers showed significantly greater TG reduction with decreased energy balance than wild type carriers after adjustment for age, gender, and baseline plasma TG levels. CONCLUSIONS: The genetic effects of APOA5 T-1131C independently affected plasma TG levels. However, lifestyle modification was effective in significantly reducing plasma TG levels despite the APOA5 T-1131C genotype background.

Oxidative Modification of Neurofilament-L by Copper-catalyzed Reaction

  • Neurofilament-L (NF-L) is a major element of neuronal cytoskeletons and known to be important for neuronal survival in vivo. Since oxidative stress might play a critical role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, we investigated the role of copper and peroxide in the modification of NF-L. When disassembled NF-L was incubated with copper ion and hydrogen peroxide, then the aggregation of protein was proportional to copper and hydrogen peroxide concentrations. Dityrosine crosslink formation was obtained in copper-mediated NF-L aggregates. The copper-mediated modification of NF-L was significantly inhibited by thiol antioxidants, N-acetylcysteine, glutathione, and thiourea. A thioflavin-T binding assay was performed to determine whether the copper/$H_2O_2$ system-induced in vitro aggregation of NF-L displays amyloid-like characteristics. The aggregate of NF-L displayed thioflavin T reactivity, which was reminiscent of amyloid. This study suggests that copper-mediated NF-L modification might be closely related to oxidative reactions which may play a critical role in neurodegenerative diseases.

Aerodynamic Performance Improvement by Divergent Trailing Edge Modification to a Supercritical Airfoil

  • A computational study has been performed to determine the effects of divergent trailing edge (DTE) modification to a supercritical airfoil in transonic flow field. For this, the computational result with the original DLBA 186 supercritical airfoil was compared to that of the modified DLBA 283. A wavier-Stokes code, Fluent 5. 1, was used with Spalart-Allmaras's one-equation turbulence model. Results in this study showed that the reduction in drag due to the DTE modification is associated with weakened shock and delayed shock appearance. The decrease in drag due to the DTE modification is greater than the increase in base drag. The effect of the recirculating flow region on lift increase was also observed. An airfoil with DTE modification achieved the same lift coefficient at a lower angle of attack while giving a lower drag coefficient. Thus, the lift-to-drag ratio increases in transonic flow conditions compared to the original airfoil. The lift coefficient increases considerably whereas the lift slope increases just a little due to DTE modification.
