  • In order to observe the effects of resistant starches on the physio-nutrition in women, nine female university students were investigated using cellulose (CED), resistant starch 3 (RS3D) and resistant starch 4 (RS4D) diets. Each woman's daily intake and excretions of energy, protein and lipid were mesured together with the apparent digestibility and the amounts of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were measured. The results obtained from this researh are as follows. The daily energy intake were significantly higher in the RS4D (Resistant starch 4 diet) compared with the CED(Cellulose) and the RS3D (Resistant starch 3 diet). The metabolic energy in those periods with RS added to their diets were significantly higher whereas the metabolic energy in the period CED was significantly low. The daily protein intake was significantly higher in the RS4D compared with the CED and the RS3D. The apparent digestibility of protein was significantly higher in the RS4D compared with the CED and the RS3D. The daily lipid intake was significantly higher in the CED compared with the RS3D and the RS4D. The apparent digestibility of lipid was not significant in that period. The concentration of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, % of HDL-cholesterol and atherogenic index (A.I.) were not significant in those period. As the above results indicate, while RS3 appear to have similar effect on energy consumption rate, apparent protein digestibility and content of cholesterol in plasma, compared with the CED, but energy consumption rate and apparent digestibility of protein are significantly higher in the RS4D compared with the CED. Thus, it appears that cellulose and RS 3 share similar effects on physio-nutrition in human, while RS4 does not have the similar effects. (Korean J Nutrition 35(9) : 932∼942, 2002)

  • The effect of five plant population densities [5 (D$_1$), 10 (D$_2$), 20 (D$_3$), 30 (D$_4$), and 40 (D$_{5}$) plants/m$^2$] of four groundnut cultivars [ICGV 86699, ICG (FDRS) 10, ICGS 11 and TMV 2] and fungicide application (Kavach, chlorothalonil) to manage late leaf spot (LLS) and rust were studied in a field experiment during the 1995 and 1996 rainy seasons. LLS and rust severities were low in fungicide sprayed plots in all the cultivars irrespective of plant densities. Severities of LLS and rust, and percentage defoliation caused by LLS were significantly more in higher plant densities (D$_4$, D$_{5}$) than in lower plant densities (D$_1$, D$_2$, D$_3$) in fungicide sprayed and unsprayed plots in all the cultivars. All the cultivars gave significantly higher haulm and pod yields in fungicide sprayed plots than in unsprayed plots. Haulm and pod yields were significantly higher in higher plant densities than in lower plant densities. A combination of higher plant densities (D$_4$, D$_{5}$) and fungicide protection against LLS and rust gave maximum yield.yield.

  • This paper presents the design of linear and circular polarization baseball- shaped circular microstrip antenna (BCMA) with 3-dimensional structure using perturbation effect to reduce its size, which runs at 1.575GHz frequency bandwidth. As a result, the size of linear polarized antenna could be reduced up to 23.7% in patch diameter and 41.8% in its area. Linear polarized antenna has -26.04dB of return loss, 69MHz(4.38%) of -l0dB bandwidth, 4.51dBd of gain, and its -3dB beamwidth are 99$^{\circ}$ in E-plane, 83$^{\circ}$ in H-plane. Circular polarized antenna has -17.43dB of return loss, 113.7MHz(7.2%) of -l0dB bandwidth, 2dBd of gain, 2dB of axial ratio and its -3dB beamwidth are 87$^{\circ}$, 86$^{\circ}$ x-axis polarized, 80$^{\circ}$, 84$^{\circ}$ y-axis polarized. It has 82mm of diameter, which is 28.5% of linear polarized CMPA. Therefore, in this paper we verified that baseball-shaped 3-dimensional structure of circular microstrip patch antenna applied with perturbation effect is appropriate for miniaturization.

  • This paper represents an analog predistortion linearizer for the high power amplifier with low memory effect. The high power amplifier is implemented using a 90-W peak envelope power(PEP) LDMOSFET at 2.14-GHz and an envelope short matching topology is applied at the active ports to minimize the memory effect. The analog predistortion circuit comprises the fundamental path and the cuber and quintic generating circuits, whose amplitudes and phases can be controlled independently. The predistortion circuit is tested for two-tone and wide-band code division multiple access(WCDMA) 4FA signals. For the WCDMA signal, the adjacent channel leakage ratios(ACLRs) at 5 MHz offset are improved by 12.4 dB at average output powers of 36 dBm and 42 dBm.

  • This study investigated the hypolipidemic and antithrombotic effects of linolenic acid derived from Korean perilla oil. The experimental rats(male, Sprague-Dawley) were divided into 5 groups using a Randomized Complete Block Design and fed one of the five following diets : DO*/O#. D4/O, D4/4, D4/8, or D4/20(D*/# represents the ratio of linoleic to linoenic acid as the percentage of total dietary energy intake) for 4 or 8 months. Bleeding time and whole blood clotting time were determined and the composition of serum and platelet lipids analyzed. Comparisons from the DO/O to the D4/20 group showed that serum lipids (total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol) gradually decreased with increasing linolenic acid intake - the hypolipidemic effect. The composition of platelet fatty acids[the ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA)/arachidonci aci(AA)] increased gradually with increasing linolenic acid intake. Higher linolenic acid intake increased bleeding time and whole blood clotting time, and decreased malondialdehyde(MDA) production in the platelets, though no significant differences. These results suggest that linolenic acid derived from perilla oil appears to suppress the conversion of linoleic acid to AA and the EPA transformed from linolenic acid appears to suppress the conversion of AA to TXA2. Since TXA2 is a platelet-aggregating and vasoconstricting agent, the redulction of TXA2 released by platelets with increasing intake of perilla oil containing a lot of linolenic acid confers an antithrombotic effect.

  • This paper focuses on vehicle fuel economy improvement using D-Range neutral control of automatic transmission. The system objected to reducing of fuel consumption during idle. Usually, turbine of conventional auto transmission is mechanically linked to wheel during idling condition. Therefore speed ratio of torque converter is zero for that period. This causes needless power loss by the torque converter slip. To improve this inefficiency automobile makers develops electronically-controlled D-range neutral control system. The D-range neutral control system minimizes slip on the torque converter by shifting gear to a neutral position during vehicle stoped with D-range gear position. However there's insufficient study about the effect of D-range neutral control system on vehicle fuel economy. In this paper, researches are performed on effect of D-range neutral control system on vehicle fuel economy by experiment with two different vehicle. And it is also estimated the effect on vehicle fuel economy using computer simulation. As a result, 1.8% of LA-4 mode fuel economy improvement can be achieved in a vehicle by D-range neutral control system.

  • For the reduction of parasitic inductance and matching of bonding wire in the package of microwave devices, we propose multiple bonding wires buried in a dielectric material of FR-4 composite. This structure is analyzed using the method of moments (MoM) and compared with the common bondwires and ribbon interconnections. The FR-4 composite is modelled by the cole-cole model which can consider the loss and the variation of the permittivity in a frequency. At 20 GHz, the parasitic reactance is reduced by 90%, 80%, 60% compared to those of a single bonding wire in air, double bonding wires in air and ribbon interconnection in air, respectively. Also, the new bondwire shows very good matching of 60.ohm characteristic impedance and has 15dB, 10dB, 5dB improvement of the return loss and 2.5dB, 0.7dB, 0.2dB improvement of the insertion loss compared to the common interconnections. This technique can minimize the parasitic effect of bondwires in microwave device packaging.

  • The chemical warfare agents (CWAs) have been developed for offensive or defensive purposes and used as chemical weapons in war and terrorism. The CWAs are exposed to the natural environment, transported through the water system and then eventually contaminate soil and groundwater. Therefore, effective decontamination technology to remediate CWAs are needed. The CWAs are extremely dangerous and prodution is strictly prohibited, therefore, it is difficult to use CWAs even in experimental purpose. In this study, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was chosen as a model representative CWA because it is a simulant of anti-plant CWAs and one of the major component of agent orange. The optimum degradation conditions such as oxidant:activator ratio were determined. The effects of hydroxylamine and chelating agents such as citric acid (CA), oxalic acid (OA), malic acid (MA), and EDTA addition to increase Fe2+ activation were also investigated. Scavenger experiments using tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and ethanol confirmed that although both sulfate (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) existed in Fe2+-persulfate system, sulfate radical was the predominant radical. To promote the Fe2+ activator effect, the effect of hydroxylamine as a reducing agent was investigated. In chelating agents assisted Fe2+-persulfate oxidation, the addition of 2 mM of CA and MA enhanced 2,4-D degradation. In contrast, EDTA and OA inhibited the 2,4-D removal due to steric hindrance effect.

  • Ninety advanced Catla catla fingerlings (av. wt. 16 g) were randomly distributed in six treatment groups with three replicates each for an experimental period of 60 days to study the effect of dietary lipid source on growth, enzyme activities and immuno-hematological parameters. Six isoprotein (40.0-41.9%) and isocaloric (4,260 kcal $kg^{-1}$) semi-purified diets were prepared with varying levels of soybean oil (SBO) and cod liver oil (CLO) within a total of 8% lipid viz., $D_1$ (Control), $D_2$ (8% SBO), $D_3$ (6% SBO and 2% CLO), $D_4$ (4% SBO and 4% CLO), $D_5$ (2% SBO and 6% CLO) and $D_6$ (8% CLO). Highest SGR was noted in $D_5$ (0.73${\pm}$0.03) group, which was similar with $D_3$ (0.71${\pm}$0.02) and $D_4$ (0.69${\pm}$0.01) groups. Activity of intestinal lipase, hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and aspartate amino transferase (AST) of the lipid treatment groups were significantly higher (p<0.05) than the control group. The respiratory burst activity of the phagocytes (Nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT)) was highest in $D_2$ (1.95${\pm}$0.21) followed by $D_3$ (1.19${\pm}$0.15) group, which were significantly (p<0.05) higher than the other groups. Globulin level was significantly higher in $D_3$ (1.29${\pm}$0.08) than in the other groups expect $D_4$. Hemoglobin content and total erythrocyte count did not show any significant difference. From this study, it is concluded that a diet containing 6% soybean oil and 2% cod liver oil ($D_3$) yields higher growth and immune response in Catla catla fingerlings and would be cost effective.
