  • A new thin sandwich panel composed of an aluminum expanded metal core adhesively jointed with stainless steel face sheets is introduced, and its mechanical behavior under three-point bending is investigated. The strength and stiffness are analyzed theoretically, and the press-formability and strength enhancement are evaluated experimentally. The specimens with the specific configurations exhibit face yielding well before face-core separation, which means that the sandwich panel can be formed by a press without failure. The measured load levels corresponding to the face yielding and the face-core separation agree fairly well with the theoretical estimations. For a given weight, the sandwich panel is superior to a solid panel in terms of strength, stiffness, and press-formability.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of surface modifications on the bonding characteristics and cytotoxicity of specific titanium porcelain bonded to milling titanium and cast titanium. Milling titanium and cast titanium samples were divided into 8 test groups. These groups are as follow: i) sandblasted with particles of different size of $220{\mu}m\;and\;50{\mu}m$, ii) different sequences of sandblasting treatment and etching treatment, iii) etched with different etching solutions, and iv) preheated or not. The surface characteristics of specimens were characterized by the test of mean roughness of surface and SEM. The bond strength of titanium-ceramic systems was measured by using three-point bending test and SEM. The results show that the mean roughness of surface of sample sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide increased and bond strength were higher than sample sandblasted with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. The mean roughness of surface decreased, but the bond strength increased when the samples sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide were preheated. The sample sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide after oxidized with occupational corrosive agent I (50% NaOH, 10% $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$) and II (35% $HNO_3$, 5% HF) showed higher bond strength than sample oxidized with 30% $HNO_3$ after sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. Group NaCuNF220SP (milling Ti: 35.3985 MPa, casting Ti: 37.2306 MPa) which was treated with occupational corrosive agent I (50% NaOH, 10% $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$) and II (35% $HNO_3$, 5% HF), followed by sandblasting with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide and preheating at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed the highest bond strength and significant differences (P<0.05). The method for modifying surface of titanium showed excellent stability of cells.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study is to examine the effects of a nano-structured alumina coating on the adhesion between resin cements and zirconia ceramics using a four-point bending test. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 100 pairs of zirconium bar specimens were prepared with dimensions of $25mm{\times}2mm{\times}5mm$ and cementation surfaces of $5mm{\times}2mm$. The samples were divided into 5 groups of 20 pairs each. The groups are as follows: Group I (C) - Control with no surface modification, Group II (APA) - airborne-particle-abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ high-purity aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) particles, Group III (ROC) - airborne-particle-abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ silica modified aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3+SiO_2$) particles, Group IV (TCS) - tribochemical silica coated with $Al_2O_3$ particles, and Group V (AlC) - nano alumina coating. The surface modifications were assessed on two samples selected from each group by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The samples were cemented with two different self-adhesive resin cements. The bending bond strength was evaluated by mechanical testing. RESULTS. According to the ANOVA results, surface treatments, different cement types, and their interactions were statistically significant (P<.05). The highest flexural bond strengths were obtained in nano-structured alumina coated zirconia surfaces (50.4 MPa) and the lowest values were obtained in the control group (12.00 MPa), both of which were cemented using a self-adhesive resin cement. CONCLUSION. The surface modifications tested in the current study affected the surface roughness and flexural bond strength of zirconia. The nano alumina coating method significantly increased the flexural bond strength of zirconia ceramics.

  • Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a self-polymerizing resin for removable orthodontic devices, has been used as a dental orthodontic device for many years because of its advantages such as color stability, volume stability, and tissue compatibility. However, such a removable orthodontic device has a disadvantage that the longer the use in the oral cavity due to the low strength of the PMMA fracture of the orthodontic device resin in use. In this study, zinc nanoparticles (ZNP) were mixed with orthodontic PMMA to introduce strength effect. Rectangular samples ($1.4{\times}3.0{\times}19.0mm$) of orthodontic PMMA (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0%) containing ZNP were prepared. The finished specimen was tested for three-point bending strength at a speed of 1 mm / min, and the Vickers hardness was measured three times using a hardness tester. The surface roughness was measured with a surface roughness. As a result, the 3-point bending strength did not change significantly (p>0.05). Surface energy increased significantly. As a result, we successfully synthesized ZNP in this study and prepared the dispersed resin specimen for calibration. It will be possible to develop high-density dental orthodontic resins.

  • Objectives: Self-adhesive resin cements contain functional monomers that enable them to adhere to the tooth structure without a separate adhesive or etchant. One of the most stable functional monomers used for chemical bonding to calcium in hydroxyapatite is 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the10-MDP concentration on the bond strength and physical properties of self-adhesive resin cements. Materials and Methods: We used experimental resin cements containing 3 different concentrations of 10-MDP: 3.3 wt% (RC1), 6.6 wt% (RC2), or 9.9 wt% (RC3). The micro-tensile bond strength of each resin cement to dentin and a hybrid resin block (Estenia C&B, Kuraray Noritake Dental) was measured, and the fractured surface morphology was analyzed. Further, the flexural strength of the resin cements was measured using the three-point bending test. The water sorption and solubility of the cements following 30 days of immersion in water were measured. Results: The bond strength of RC2 was significantly higher than that of RC1. There was no significant difference between the bond strength of RC2 and that of RC3. The water sorption of RC3 was higher than that of any other cement. There were no significant differences in the three-point bending strength or water solubility among all three types of cements. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, it is suggested that 6.6 wt% 10-MDP showed superior properties than 3.3 wt% or 9.9 wt% 10-MDP in self-adhesive resin cement.

  • This study was carried out to manufacture bark board from oak bark by new processes and to examine the physical and mechanical properties of the board. This process with no addition of adhesive used higher pressure and temperature than the conventional one and was applied with or without paraformaldehyde. The results are as follows: 1. The new manufacturing process allowed a good bark board with high absorption coefficient. 2. The best manufacturing process for the mechanical properties of bark board was paraformaldehyde 10%-$250^{\circ}C$-100kg/$cm^2$-3 minutes, (bending strength 40kg/$cm^2$, internal bonding strength 2kg/$cm^2$) and the best manufacturing process for both the mechanical properties of bark board and economic point of view was $250^{\circ}C$-100kg/$cm^2$-3 minutes (bending strength 28kg/$cm^2$, internal bonding strength 1.52kg/$cm^2$). 3. Bark board showed specific gravities from 0.94 to 1.03 and air dried moisture content 9.2% to 11.7%, but Bark board needed paraffin wax emusion treatment. 4. The absorption coefficient of bark boards had two peaks along with frequency; one in 200-400 cps, the other 1200-2000 cps. The former was low but the latter great.

  • In this study, we describe the conventional hot pressing (CHP) of layered $Al-B_4C$ composites and their characterization. The matrix alloy Al-5 wt.%Cu was prepared from elemental powder mixtures. The metal and B4C powders were mixed to produce either $Al-Cu-10vol.%B_4C$ or $Al-Cu-30vol.%B_4C$ combinations. Then, these powder mixtures were stacked as layers in the hot pressing die to form a two-layered composite. Hot pressing was carried out under nitrogen atmosphere to produce $30\times40\times5mm$ specimens. Microstructural features and age hardening characteristics of composites were determined by specimens cut longitudinally. The flexural strength of both layered composites and their monolithic counterparts were investigated via three point bending tests. In the case of layered specimens of both $10vol.%B_4C$ and $30vol.%B_4C$ containing layers were loaded for three-point test. The results show that a homogeneous distribution of $B_4C$ particles in the matrix alloy which is free of pores, can be obtained by CHP method. The ageing behavior of the composites was found to be influenced by the reinforced materials, i.e. higher hardness values were reached in 8 hrs for the composites than that for the matrix alloy. Flexural strength test showed that two-layered composites exhibited improved damage tolerance depending on layer arrangement. Microstructural investigation of the fracture surfaces of the bending specimens was performed by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM). While layer with lower reinforcement content exhibited large plastic deformation under loading, the other with higher reinforcement content exhibited less plastic deformation.

  • This was studied about mechanical characteristic of AC4A/SiCw 10-30% reinforced composites. Tensile strength of pressed base metal(base metal) with SiCw preform was higher than without pressed base metal(AC4A). If SiCw whisker volume fraction was increased, tensile strength at room temperature was increased. And tensile strength of SiCw 30% was about $35kg/mm^2$. Tensile strength of SiCw 30 % $400^{\circ}C$ at same time aging was the most excellence, about $40kg/mm^2$. The fracture energy value of composite material at three point bending test was higher than AC4A. Dislocation at matrix of composite material was evenly distributed. But dislocation around whisker of composite material was more existed than matrix. The reasom was thought of pile-up around whisker.

  • In this paper, static and fatigue bending strengths and failure mechanisms of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates having impact damages have been evaluated. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CF/EPOXY orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces $[0^0_ 4/90^0_4]_{ sym}$. A steel ball launched by the air gun collides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damages. The damage growth during bending fatigue test is observed by the scanning acoustic microscope (SAM) and also, the fracture surfaces were observed by using the SEM (scanning electron microscope). In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is propagated from the transverse crack generated near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-B delamination in the case of impacted-side tension. Eventually, failure mechanisms have been confirmed based on the observed delamination areas and fracture surfaces.

  • Indentation fracture method and 4-point bending test are carried out to measure the residual stresses and the bending strength, and to investigate the mechanism of fracture mechanics in the bonded interface of ceramic and metal. The results obtained are as follows ; 1) The fracture patterns of bonded materials shows that the delamlnatlon fracture of Interfaces is stablely developed from the interfaces of ceramic/active metallic bonded materials at the specimen center, and the fracture is unstablely generated through a refraction on the middle ceramic. 2) Distribution of residual stresses is quantitatively investigated on the ceramic side of bonded materials. 3) It Is found that the residual stresses of interface vertical direction are concentrated on the bonded interface at the ceramic side.
