The aim of this study is to suggest a semi-empirical equation for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of sands using geoelectrical measurements technique. The suggested formula is based on the original Kozeny-Carman equation; therefore varying factors affecting the Kozeny-Carman equation were selected as the testing variables, and six different sands with varying particle sizes and particle shapes were used as the testing materials in this study. To measure both hydraulic and electrical conductivities, a series of constant head permeameter tests equipped with the four electrodes conductivity probe was conducted. Test results reveal that the effects of both pore water conductivity and flow rate in relation between hydraulic conductivity and formation factor (=pore water conductivity / measused conductivity of soil) of tested materials are negligible. However, because the variations of hydraulic conductivity of the tested sands according to particle sizes are significant, the estimated hydraulic conductivity using the formation factor varies with particle sizes. The overall comparison between the measured hydraulic conductivity and the estimated hydraulic conductivity using the suggested formula shows a good agreement, and the variation of hydraulic conductivity with varying Archie's m exponents is smaller compared with varying porosities.
Ionic polymer metal composites (IPMC) are soft polymeric smart materials having large displacement at low voltage in air and water. The polymeric electrolyte actuator consists of a thin and porous membrane and metal electrodes plated on both faces, in impregnation electro-plating method. The response and actuation of actuator are governed. Among many factors governing the activation and response of IPMC actuator, the surface electrode plays an important role. In this study, the well-designed modification of electrode surface was carried out in order to improve the chemical stability well as electromechanical characteristics of the IPMC actuator. We employed Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD) method to prepare the topologically homogeneous thin surface electrode. After roughing the surface of Nafion membrane in order to get a larger surface area, the IPMC was prepared by impregnation for electro-plating and re- coating on the surface through traditional chemical deposition, followed by an additional surface treatment with high conductive metals with IBAD. It was observed that our IPMC specimen shows the enhanced surface electrical properties as well as the improved actuation and response characteristics under applied electric field.

Recently Zr-based $AB_2$ type hydrogen absorbing alloy has received much attention as a negative electrode material for the Ni-MH batteries because of its high capacity. In this study $ZrV_{0.1}Mn_{0.7}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy was chosen and the effects of heat treatment and a partial substitution of the Mo in Mn site on the various electrode properties were investigated. The alloys was prepared by arc melting (as-cast sample). Some of them were heat treated at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. After this they were differentiated by the different cooling rates of slow cooling and quenching. Various electrode characteristics such as activation process, high rate dischargeability and self discharge characteristic were investigated with the three types of electrodes. It was found that heat treated alloys resulted in an increase in plateau flatness of P-C isotherms however both discharge capacity and high rate capability were decreased. And the partial substitution of Mo for Mn in $ZrV_{0.1}Mn_{0.7}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy improved the self-discharge characteristic without the loss of discharge capacity (300mAh/g).
Objectives : The hypothesis that the brain is a nonlinear dynamical system exhibiting deterministic chaos has offered new perspectives to the investigation of information processing in the brain of schizophrenic patients. It seemed worthwhile to estimate nonlinear measures of the electroencephalogram (EEG) in positive and negative schizophrenics, because nonlinear measures might serve as indicators of the specific brain function in schizophrenia according to specific psychopathologies. Method : Previous studies which estimated the chaoticity in the brain of schizophrenia with nonlinear methods recorded the EEGs at limited electrodes, so we tried to record EEGs from 16 channels for nonlinear analysis in 8 positive and 9 negative schizophrenics and 8 healthy control subjects. We employed a new method to calculate the nonlinear invariant measures. For limited noisy data, this algorithm was strikingly faster and more accurate than previous ones. Results : Our results showed that the patients with negative schizophrenia had lower the first positive Lyapunov exponents ($L_1$) than the positive schizophrnics and control subjects at $T_3$ lead. Positive symptoms were positively correlated with $L_1$ in $C_3,\;O_1$ leads, and negatively correlated with $C_4$ lead. Conclusion : These results suggest that if clinical variables such as psychopathology or neuroleptic medications would be well controlled, the nonlinear analysis of the EEGs in patients with schizophrenia seems to be a useful tool in analyzing EEG data to explore the neurodynamics.
In this study, the development of biosensors capable of bi-enzyme reactions by including Horseradish peroxidase and glucose oxidase was carried out for detection of glucose. The sensors were manufactured using electro deposition method to reduce production time, and screen printed electrodes (SPE) were used to produce economical sensors. To check the bienzyme effect, the sensor was compared and analyzed with single enzyme biosensor. The characteristics of the sensor were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), cyclic voltammetry(CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS), chronoamperometry(CA), and flow injection analysis(FIA). Analysis results from SEM, CV and EIS confirmed that the enzymes are well fixed to the electrode surface. In addition, it was confirmed that bi-enzyme biosensors manufactured from the CA method improved signal performance by 200% compared to single enzyme biosensors. From this results, we were able to explain that HRP and GOD react catalyzed to each other. And the results of FIA showed that the intensity of each current signal was constant when the same concentration of glucose was injected four times. In addition, by analyzing the intensity of current signals for glucose concentrations, the biosensors manufactured in this study showed excellent trends in signal sensitivity, reproducibility and stability.

Mitochondria play key roles in the production of cell's energy. Their dominant function is the synthesis of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) from adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and phosphate (Pi) through the oxidative phosphorylation. Evaluation of drug-induced mitochondrial toxicity has become increasingly important since mitochondrial dysfunction has recently been implicated in numerous diseases including cancer and diabetes mellitus. Mitochondrial functions have been monitored via oxygen consumption, mitochondrial membrane potential, and more importantly via ATP synthesis since ATP synthesis is the most essential function of mitochondria. Various analytical methods have been employed to investigate ATP synthesis in mitochondria, including high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), bioluminescence technique, and pH measurement. However, most of these methods are based on destructive analysis or indirect monitoring through the enzymatic reaction. Infrared absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) is one of the useful techniques for real-time, label-free, and direct monitoring of biological reactions [1,2]. However, the strong water absorption requires very short path length in the order of several micrometers. Transmission measurements with thin path length are not suitable for mitochondrial assays because solution handlings necessary for evaluating mitochondrial toxicity, such as rapid mixing of drugs and oxygen supply, are difficult in such a narrow space. On the other hand, IRAS in the multiple internal reflection (MIR) geometry provides an ideal optical configuration to combine solution handling and aqueous-phase measurement. We have recently reportedon a real-time monitoring of drug-induced necrotic and apoptotic cell death using MIR-IRAS [3,4]. Clear discrimination between viable and damaged cells has been demonstrated, showing a promise as a label-free and real-time detection for cell-based assays. In the present study, we have applied our MIR-IRAS system to mitochondria-based assays by monitoring ATP synthesis in isolated mitochondria from rat livers. Mitochondrial ATP synthesis and hydrolysis were in situ monitored with MIR-IRAS, while dissolved oxygen level and solution pH were simultaneously monitored with O2 and pH electrodes, respectively. It is demonstrated that ATP synthesis and hydrolysis can be monitored by the IR spectral changes in phosphate groups in adenine nucleotides and MIR-IRAS is useful for evaluating time-dependent drug effects of mitochondrial toxicants.
In this study, the authors measured voltage and current waveforms in real time during a serial arc discharge. The analysis results of the arc discharge radiation patterns exhibited intermittent discharge, arc growth, creation of a heat generating area, occurrence of plume, and formation of a red heat area, which proceeded in that order. When the serial arc discharge was introduced, the current and voltage waveforms exhibited periodicity as sine waves. It was also observed that a restriking transient voltage occurred when the waveform changed from positive (+) to negative (-) and vice versa. When the discharge proceeded, the amount of heat generated for 1 s and 600 s was approximately 0.317 mJ, and 190 mJ, respectively. The duration of the short circuit was approximately 1.66 ms, and in the case of the voltage waveform, it was evident that the electric potential increased to 49.9 V in the same cycle. Furthermore, when the discharge proceeded, the effective value (RMS value) of the current was approximately 1.72 A with a maximum current of approximately 2.53 A, whereas the effective value of the voltage was approximately 42.8 V with a maximum of approximately 208 V.
Resistivity monitoring is based on the fact that a change in the porosity leads to the changes in water content and fine particles, which alter the electrical resistivity. At every embankment dam, internal erosion always occurs as time passes. The internal erosion generally develops into piping over a long time by backward erosion and concentrated leak, and finally leads to dam failure. Resistivity is known to be very sensitive to the changes in porosity in embankment dams. Thus resistivity monitoring is a reasonable method to find out the leakage zone. However, resistivity is strongly influenced by seasonal variation of temperature, TDS of reservoir water and water level. In this paper. we first installed electrodes permanently at the center of the crest. The electrical resistivity monitoring data was acquired every 6 hours from Apr. 3, 2011 to July. 31, 2012. To analyze the characteristics of monitoring data, each resistivity data was calculated from up to 2,950 data sets. The result indicated a seasonal resistivity variation due to related temperature. Finally, a quantitative method to estimate porosities of the embankment dam from the resistivity monitoring data was analyzed. The applicability and reliability were verified and the importance of electrical resistivity monitoring for obtaining reliable result was emphasized.

The present work explores the performance and operation limit of electrodialysis cell for HI concentration in sulfur iodine thermochemical hydrogen production process, For this purpose, the electrodialysis cell was assembled with Nafion 117 as a PEM membrane and two activated carbon papers as the electrodes. HIx solution was prepared with composition of HI: $I_2$: $H_2O$ = 1: 0.5~2.5: 5.2 in molar ratio. The cell and its peripheral apparatus were placed in the specially designed convective oven in order to uniformly maintain the operation temperature. As operation temperature increased, the amount of water transport from anode to cathode increased, thus reducing HI molarity in catholyte. Meanwhile, the current efficiency was constant as about 90 %, irrespective of temperature change. The cell voltage increased with initial $I_2$ mole ratio as well as anolyte to catholyte mole ratio. Moreover the cell voltage overshot took place within 10 h cell operation, which is due to the $I_2$ precipitation inside the cell. From the analysis of $I_2$ mole ratio in the anolyte, it is noted that operation limit (in $I_2$ mole ratio) of the electrodialysis cell, arising from was measured to be 3.2, which is much lower than bulk solubility limit of 4.7.
In this study, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) were conducted to find the mineralized zone at the Geumpung mine in Dojeon-ri, Susan-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do. The deviation of the inclined borehole was measured to obtain the exact positions of the electrodes for correcting apparent resistivity values from ERT. Geophysical loggings such as resistivity and natural gamma were conducted to obtain the properties of the material near the borehole. Measurements of the physical properties of the cores, such as porosity, water content, density, susceptibility, resistivity were performed to analyze the correlation between physical properties and resistivity. Grade analysis for core sample was also conducted to identify relationship between grade and resistivity. Rock property analysis shows that the resistivity is more dominated by susceptibility and grade than by porosity and water content in the mineralized zone. The results of ERT are well consistent with geophysical logging data and geologic column. So ERT is powerful method to identify conductive mineralized zone.
