  • Implant requires long lasting, strong osseointegration using bio-mechanical interlocking by bone ingrowth. In regarding the size level for bone ingrowth, the micro-patterning would enhance bone response. Micro-patterning can increase the area contacting the bone tissues. Therefore, it may distribute the load to the surrounding bone tissue, more effectively. This study compared and analyzed the load distributing effect with the shape and number of micro-patterning. For the optimal comparison of threads, the assumptions different from general finite element analysis model were made. It was assumed that the implant was axisymmetric and infinitely long. The implant was assumed to be completely embedded in the infinitely long cortical bone and to have 100% bone apposition. The implant-bone interface had completely fixed boundary conditions and received an infinitely big axial load. The condition of threads were as follows. The reference model 1 had conventional thread. Model 2 had 2 micro-patterns on the upper flank of the thread. Model 3 had 2 micro-patterns on the lower flank of the thread. Model 4 had 2 micro-patterns on the upper and lower flanks of the thread. Model 5 had 3 micro patterns on the upper and lower flanks of the thread. The results were as follows: 1. The thread with micro-patterns distributed stress better than the conventional thread. 2. The thread with micro-patterns on the lower flank distributed stress better than that with micro-patterns on the upper flank. 3. The thread with 3 micro-patterns distributed stress better than that with 2 micro-patterns, However, an area with stress concentration occurred.

  • In order to get the fundamental information that could be useful to judge the potentiality of occurrence of rapid shallow landslide in the objective slope, factors selected on Jinhae regions in Korea, where many landslides were caused by heavy rainfall of daily 465 mm and hourly 52mm in August 1979, was carried out through the multiple statistics of quantification method (II) by the electronic computer. The net system with $2{\times}2cm$ unit mesh was overlayed with the contour map of scale 1:5000. 74 meshes of landslides and 119 meshes of non-landslide were sampled out to survey the state of vegetative cover and geomorphological conditions, those were divided into 6 items arid 27 categories. As a result, main factors that would lead to landslide were shown in order of vegetation, slope type, slope position, slope, aspect and numbers of stream. Particularly, coniferous forest of 10 years old, concave slope and foot of mountain were main factors making slope instability. On the contrary, coniferous forest of 20-30 years old, deciduous forest, convex slope and summit contributed to the stable against Landslide. The boundary value between two groups of existence and none of landslides was -0.123, and its prediction was 72%. It was well predicted to divide into two groups of them.

  • The delamination in the filament-wound composite flywheel rotor often lowers the performance of the flywheel energy storage system. A conventional ring type hub usually causes tensile stresses on the inner surface of the composite rotor, resulting in lowering the maximum rotational speed of the rotor. In this work, the stress and strain distributions within a hybrid composite rotor were derived from the two-dimensional governing equation with the specified boundary conditions, and an optimum pressure at the inner surface of the rotor was proposed to minimize the strength ratio and maximize the storage energy. A split type hub was introduced to apply the calculated optimum pressure at the inner surface, and a spin test was performed up to 40,000 rpm to demonstrate the performance of the split type hub with radial and circumferential strains measured using a wireless telemetry system. From the analysis and the test, it was found that the split type hub successfully generates a compressive pressure on the inner surface of the rotor, which can enhance the performance of the composite rotor by lowering the strength ratio within the rotor.

  • For the same configuration of two-dimensional finite element models, 6-node element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness than 8-node element. This is true in the relation between 16-node element and 20-node element for three-dimensional model. This stiffening phenomenon comes from the elimination of several mid nodes from full-node elements. Therefore, this may be called 'relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon'. It seems that there are a couple of ways to correct the stiffening effect, however, we could find only one effective method-the method of modification of Gauss sampling points-which passes the patch test and does not alter other kinds of stiffness, such as extensional stiffness. The quantity of modification is a function of Poisson's ratios of the constituent materials. We could obtain two modification equations, one for plane stress case and the other for plane strain case. This method can be extended to 3-dimensional solid elements. Except the exact plane strain cases, most 3-dimensional plates could be modeled successfully with 16-node element modified by the equation for the plane stress case. The effectiveness of the modification method is checked by applying it to several examples with excellent improvements. In numerical examples, beams with various boundary conditions are subjected to static and time-dependent loads. Free and forced motion analyses of beams and plates are also tested. The beam and plate may be composed of isotropic multilayers as well as a single layer.

  • The dry deposition velocities and fluxes of air pollutants such as SO2(g), O3(g), HNO3(g), sub-micron particulates, NO3(s), and SO42-(s) were estimated according to local meteorological elements in the atmospheric boundary layer. The model used for these calculations was the multiple layer resistance model developed by Hicks et al.1). The meteorological data were recorded on an hourly basis from July, 1990 to June, 1991 at the Austin Cary forest site, near Gainesville FL. Weekly integrated samples of ambient dry deposition species were collected at the site using triple-fiter packs. For the study period, the annual average dry deposition velocities at this site were estimated as 0.87$\pm$0.07 cm/s for SO2(g), 0.65$\pm$0.11 cm/s for O3(g), 1.20$\pm$0.14cm/s for HNO3(g), 0.0045$\pm$0.0006 cm/s for sub-micron particulates, and 0.089$\pm$0.014 cm/s for NO3-(s) and SO42-(s). The trends observed in the daily mean deposition velocities were largely seasonal, indicated by larger deposition velocities for the summer season and smaller deposition velocities for the winter season. The monthly and weekly averaged values for the deposition velocities did not show large differences over the year yet did show a tendency of increased deposition velocities in the summer and decreased values in the winter. The annual mean concentrations of the air pollutants obtained by the triple filter pack every 7 days were 3.63$\pm$1.92 $\mu\textrm{g}$/m3 for SO42-, 2.00$\pm$1.22 $\mu\textrm{g}$/m-3 for SO2, 1.30$\pm$0.59 $\mu\textrm{g}$/m-3 for HNO3, and 0.704$\pm$0.419 $\mu\textrm{g}$/m3 for NO3-, respectively. The air pollutant with the largest deposition flux was SO2 followed by HNO3, SO42-(S), and NO3-(S) in order of their magnitude. The sulfur dioxide and NO3- deposition fluxes were higher in the winter than in the summer, and the nitric acid and sulfate deposition fluxes were high during the spring and summer.

  • When tracking a human face in the moving pictures with complex background under irregular lighting conditions, the detected face can be larger including background or smaller including only a part of the face. Even background can be detected as a face area. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a new face tracking method using a block difference image and a Kalman estimator. The block difference image allows us to detect even a small motion of a human and the face area is selected using the skin color inside the detected motion area. If the pixels with skin color inside the detected motion area, the boundary of the area is represented by a code sequence using the 8-neighbor window and the head area is detected analysing this code. The pixels in the head area is segmented by colors and the region most similar with the skin color is considered as a face area. The detected face area is represented by a rectangle including the area and its four vertices are used as the states of the Kalman estimator to trace the motion of the face area. It is proved by the experiments that the proposed method increases the accuracy of face detection and reduces the fare detection time significantly.

  • Korean peninsula has a long history and a geopolitical location as a buffer tone, which has provided the conditions for cultural dynamism and diversity across space and time. The changing processes of place names in Korea is considered to be better suited to the study on cultural politics that is interested in the culture wars over the meaning of culture among different social subjects. In order to ensure the legitimacy of cultural politics for the study of place names in Korea, this study attempts to make a theoretical construction based on the concepts of place identity, territorial contestation, and the politics of scale. Cultural and linguistic theories to be best applied to the study of place names in Korea are the theories on Angehm's and Castells' identity, $P{\hat{e}}cheux's$ identification, Hall's decoding, and Voloshinov's ideological sign. Power relations involved in the inclusion and exclusion are necessarily concerned with the process of constructing a place identity or territorial identity by means of a place name, which represents identity and ideology of a social subject. In the examination of this process, it is necessary to take the elements of identity, ideology and power relations into consideration. In this study, therefore, the politics of scale is experimented for its applicability in the study of place name in Korea, which is expected to accommodate concepts of boundary, territory, territoriality and territorialization. In the end, it is suggested in this study that a series of basic and interdisciplinary studies on the cultural politics of place names in a range of area should be undertaken along with the enough theoretical knowledge of cultural politics.

  • The mammogram provides the way to observe detailed internal organization of breasts to radiologists for the early detection. This paper is mainly focused on efficiently detecting the Microcalcification's Region Of Interest(ROI)s. Breast cancers can be caused from either microcalcifications or masses. Microcalcifications are appeared in a digital mammogram as tiny dots that have a little higher gray levels than their surrounding pixels. We can roughly determine the area which possibly contain microcalifications. In general, it is very challenging to find all the microcalcifications in a digital mammogram, because they are similar to some tissue parts of a breast. To efficiently detect microcalcifications ROI, we used four sequential processes; preprocessing for breast area detection, modified multilevel thresholding, ROI selection using simple thresholding filters and final ROI selection with two stages of neural networks. The filtering process with boundary conditions removes easily-distinguishable tissues while keeping all microcalcifications so that it cleans the thresholded mammogram images and speeds up the later processing by the average of 86%. The first neural network shows the average of 96.66% recognition rate. The second neural network performs better by showing the average recognition rate 98.26%. By removing all tissues while keeping microcalcifications as much as possible, the next parts of a CAD system for detecting breast cancers can become much simpler.

  • In this study, the governing equations of motion for multi-cracked nonuniform nanobeam based on nonlocal elasticity theory and embedded in an elastic medium were derived. DTM(differential transformation method) was applied to vibration analysis of multi-cracked nonuniform nanobeam based on nonlocal elasticity theory and embedded in an elastic medium. The non-dimensional natural frequencies of this nanobeam were obtained for eoe, crack stiffness and elastic medium stiffness with various boundary conditions. The results obtained by this method was compared with previous works and showed the close agreement between two methods. The important conclusions obtained by this study are as follows : 1. As the length of nanobeam is shorter, the effect of scale coefficient is greater. 2. The locations of crack change non-dimensional natural frequency, In the case of fixed-fixed ends, the non-dimensional natural frequency is the biggest in the first crack location of 0.6L of nanobeam length, and the smallest in both ends. In the case of fixed-free ends, the closer the location of first crack go tho the free end, the bigger the non-dimensional natural frequency. 3. As the stiffness of crack is greater, the non-dimensional natural frequency is smaller, And the effect of crack stiffness is similar on both fixed-free ends and fixed-fixed ends. 4. The bigger the stiffness of elastic medium, the greater the non - dimensional natural frequency.

  • There has been a growing interest in the elimination of anoxic layer in the Youngsan River Estuarybecause the anoxic water mass caused mainly by the inflow of fresh water from the sea wall might cause the mass reduction of benthos during summer. An ocean outfall system to discharge treated wastewater into sea water may be used as one of the effective and economical ways to eliminate the anoxic layer. The suitable ocean outfall design is generally proposed for the prediction of the buoyant jet behavior in the near field. The parameters including CTD and current data are taken into account f3r more reliable buoyant jet behavior calculation. One of the numerical models, CORMIX 1, approved by EPA is used herein for the prediction of the trajectorial variation of the cross-sectional salinity and DO concentration distribution on the calculated buoyant jet boundary according to the tidal periods. On the basis of the results, it is suggested that the single port outfall is a useful system to eliminate the anoxic layer. Proper strategies are also proposed for achieving desirable ambient conditions.
