  • Main focus on balance shaft module is to reduce the vibration triggered from engine block and compensate it from unbalance mass in balance shaft. Since the performance of balance shaft module is controlled by rotor shape including unbalance mass, a design strategy on rotor is key issue on determine the quality of balance shaft system. Even the design result on balance shaft mostly affect the lay-out of housing and other related components, its issue on balance shaft should be considered in advance throughout the total design procedure. In this paper, optimal design strategy focused on balance shaft is presented to make a design process efficiently with ensuring its high performance. And its method is verified with field design process of balance shaft in commonly adapted vehicle with 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder engine.

  • Friction between piston-ring assembly and cylinder wall of a spark ignition engine was evaluated under various engine operating conditions utilizing a grasshopper linkage system. The friction force was estimated by the force balance relation at the small end of connecting rod. Three forces were chosen to be measured for the objective. They were gas pressure inside the cylinder, inertia force of the piston-ring assembly, and the force exerted by the connecting rod. These forces were measured by a piezo type pressure sensor, an accelerometer and strain gauges, respectively. Comparisons were made with the frictional force evaluated by the conventional method where the assumption of constant rotational speed of engines was adopted. Due to the variation of rotational speed of engines, the conventional method was found to lead to a large error in the evaluation of the frictional force.

  • An one-zone heat release analysis was studied for a 6 cylinder direct injetction compressionignition engine. The heat transfer constants in this anlysis were calibrated to match the measured fuel energy at 1,000 rpm full load, which was the fuel mass multiplied by the fuel's heating value. The integrated gross heat release values were close to the measured fuel energy at various full load operating conditions. The combustion inefficiency from this calculation was proportional to the smoke of exhaust gas.

  • A study on the combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics of diesel engine with various suction air humidity is performed experimentally. In this paper, suction air humidity is changed from RH 50% to RH 90%, the experiments are performed at engine speed 1800rpm, and main measured parameters are cylinder pressure, fuel consumption rate, CO, HC, NOx and Soot emissions etc. Increase of suction air humidity from RH 50% to RH 90% does not effect specific fuel consumption, decreases maximum pressure in cylinder, ratio of maximum pressure rise and net heat release, and delays ignition timing. Also, that increases CO and HC emissions, decreases NOx emissions, but does not constant in changing tendency on emission.

  • Current rechargeable battery cannot provide high energy density and the operational durations required. But linear engine/generators provide high energy density for portable power applications because fuel is more high density. In this paper, we suggest that basic design of powerpack using linear engine for assisting power output. Efficiency is relatively high because linear engine don't have crank mechanism compared with rotary engine. We made prototype engine and had experiments to know moving characteristic about the Linear Engine. It was possible to operate velocity at 50 Hz at the firing and pressure in cylinder was 16bar.

  • In this study, a computer program has been developed which predicts the variation of the volumetric efficiency with the change of design of the intake system effectively by the analysis of the flow in each part of a multi-cylinder compression ignition engine. For the calculation of the flow in the intake and exhaust systems, the method of characteristics has been used, and the double Wiebe's function has been adopted for the calculation of the heat release rate in the cylinders. The accuracy of presented method has been proved through the comparison between the simulation and experimental results over the various engine speeds and intake pipe lengths.

  • Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effect of nozzle hole geometry on the combustion characteristics of the large diesel engine. 6S90MC-C. Spray and combustion phenomena were examined numerically using FIRE code. Wane breakup and Zeldovich models were adopted to describe the atomization characteristics and NOx formation processes. Predictions on the cylinder peak pressure and NOx emission were first verified with the experimental data to confirm the reliability of numerical calculations. The comparison results showed good agreements within the range of 0.64% and 4.6% respectively. Finally, the effects of fuel spray angle and diameter on the engine performance were investigated numerically to find the optimum nozzle hole geometry considering fuel consumption, NOx emission and heat flux of the combustion chamber wall. It was concluded that the combustion gas recirculation in cylinder by changing fuel injection direction is an effective method to reduce NOx emission by about 10% with increasing fuel oil consumption, 1.4% in a large diesel engine.

  • This experimental study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the in-cylinder eccentricity swirl flow generated by a 4 valve cylinder head with a tangential and a helical intake port. the measurements of the in-cylinder velocity field have been made by a two-channel LDA system. The mean flow coefficient(Cf(meam)), swirl ratio(Rs) and mass flowrate with valve eccentricity ratios and an intake port partition between the two intake ports were measured in the steady flow test fig using the ISM(impulse swirl meter). The experimental results indicated that the mass flowrate through the tangential intake port was 19% and 7.7% more than that of the helical intake port in case of with and without intake port partition respectively. There was a tendency to be a single rotation flow in swirl flow fields formed by a 4 valve cylinder head because of the interaction between the two intake ports. As the intake port partition was not set between flow coefficient(Cf(mean)) was 7.35%.

  • The primary objective of this study is to truly understand exciting forces of the in-line 4 cylinders engine. Exciting forces of the engine apply a source of the vehicle NVH(Noise, Vibration, Harshness). To understand exciting forces, first was governed theoretical equations for single cylinder engine. And this theoretical equations was programming using MATLAB software. To compare theoretical analysis value, was applied MSC.ADAMS software. To determined the specification of engine(2,000cc, in-line 4) was applied ADAMS/Engine module. And this specification for engine was applied ADAMS/View and MATLAB software. The geometry model for ADAMS/View analysis was produced by the 3-D design modeling software. After imported 3-D model, each rigid body was jointed suitable. Under idle speed for engine, was analysed. The results of analysis are fairly well agreed with those of three analysis method. Using MATLAB software proposed in this study, engine exciting fores can be predicted. Also using ADAMS/Engine module and ADAMS/View software, engine exciting forces can be predicted.

  • DEUTZ AG, co-founded in 1864 by Nicolaus August Otto, the inventor of the four-stroke cycle engine, has developed the new 2013 engine for commercial vehicles on the basis of the tried and tested 1012 and 1013 series. With 4 and 6 cylinder models, the engine covers the power range between 100 and 190 kW. At the time of their introduction to the market, the engines will meet the exhaust emission legislation of EURO IV and incorporate the potential for EURO IV, Further engineering targets were. (Compactness, Favourable power/cost relation, Low weight, Low fuel consumption and Low noise level). All targets could be accomplished in a relatively short development period via the application of modem simulation tools and test methods. In this paper, the design configuration of the engines is described with particular emphasis on measures for noise emission reduction and the combustion system including injection and turbo charging. Furthermore, we demonstrate the engine's potential to fullfill the European emission legislation EU4, which comes into force in 2005.
