2D/3D conversion algorithm on broadcast and mobile environment and the platform (방송 및 모바일 실감형 2D/3D 컨텐츠 변환 방법 및 플랫폼)

  • TV technology started from black and white TV. Color TV invented and users request more realistic TV technology. The next technology is 3DTV. For 3DTV, 3D display technology, 3D coding technology, digital mux/demux technology in broadcast and 3D video acquisition are needed. Moreover, Almost every contents now exist are 2D contents. It causes necessity to convert from 2D to 3D. This article describes 2D/3D conversion algorithm and H/W platform on FPGA board. Time difference makes 3D effect and convolution filter increased the effect. Distorted image and original image give 3D effect. The algorithm is shown on 3D display. The display device shows 3D effect by parallax barrier method and has FPGA board.

Aggregated Encoder Control Exploiting Interlayer Statistical Characteristics for Advanced Terrestrial-DMB (지상파 DMB 고도화망에서 계층간 통계적 특성을 이용한 통합 부호기 제어)

  • The SVC (Scalable Video Coding) scheme can be effectively used for reducing the redundancy and for improving the coding efficiency but, it requires very high computational complexities. In order to accelerate the successful standardization and commercialization of the Advanced Terrestrial-DMB service, it is necessary to overcome this problem. For this aim, in this paper, we propose an efficient aggregated encoder control algorithm, which shows better performances than the conventional control scheme. Computer simulation result shows that the proposed scheme performs about up to 0.3dB better than those of the conventional scheme. Additionally, based on this control scheme, we propose a fast mode decision method by constraining the redundant coding modes based on the statistical properties of the quantization parameter in the spatial scalable encoder. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed control schemes reduce the heavy computational burden up to 12% compared to the conventional scheme, while keeping the objective visual qualify very high.

A Video Watermarking Using 3D DWT and Binary Image Watermark (3차원 웨이블릿 변환과 이진 영상 워터마크를 이용한 비디오 워터마킹)

  • An effective video watermarking algorithm is proposed to protect the copyright. The watermarking procedure is based on a three-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (3D DWT) and spread spectrum sequences. Two perceptual binary watermarks are preprocessed using mixing and pseudorandom permutation. After dividing the video sequence into video shots, the 3D DWT is performed, then the preprocessed watermarks are embedded into the 3D DWT coefficients, while considering robustness and invisibility, using two spread spectrum sequences defined as the user key. Experimental results show that the watermarked frames are subjectively indistinguishable from the original frames, plus the proposed video watermarking algorithm is sufficiently robust against such attacks as low pass filtering, frame dropping, frame average, and MPEG coding.

An Improvement of Still Image Quality Based on Error Resilient Entropy Coding for Random Error over Wireless Communications (무선 통신상 임의 에러에 대한 에러내성 엔트로피 부호화에 기반한 정지영상의 화질 개선)

  • Many image and video compression algorithms work by splitting the image into blocks and producing variable-length code bits for each block data. If variable-length code data are transmitted consecutively over error-prone channel without any error protection technique, the receiving decoder cannot decode the stream properly. So the standard image and video compression algorithms insert some redundant information into the stream to provide some protection against channel errors. One of redundancies is resynchronization marker, which enables the decoder to restart the decoding process from a known state in the event of transmission errors, but its usage should be restricted not to consume bandwidth too much. The Error Resilient Entropy Code(EREC) is well blown method which can regain synchronization without any redundant information. It can work with the overall prefix codes, which many image compression methods use. This paper proposes EREREC method to improve FEREC(Fast Error-Resilient Entropy Coding). It first calculates initial searching position according to bit lengths of consecutive blocks. Second, initial offset is decided using statistical distribution of long and short blocks, and initial offset can be adjusted to insure all offset sequence values can be used. The proposed EREREC algorithm can speed up the construction of FEREC slots, and can improve the compressed image quality in the event of transmission errors. The simulation result shows that the quality of transmitted image is enhanced about $0.3{\sim}3.5dB$ compared with the existing FEREC when random channel error happens.

A 2-D triangular mesh based motion compensation for very low bit rate video coding (초 저속 비트율을 갖는 영상 부호화를 위한 2차원 삼각형 그물 기반 움직임 보상 방법)

  • This paper presents a new video codec which is based on 2-D triangular mesh-based motion compensation and two step grid point motion estimation. With this approach the efficiency of compression and the quality of reconstructed images are improved. The compensation of motion for each triangular patch is performed by image warping using motion vectors at the grid points. The prediction error coding and the rate control meet MPEG-4 VM 3.0 specification. The experimental results show that the codec system proposed is simple in complexity and moreover, the quality of decoded images is improved.

Depth compression method for 3D video (3차원 영상을 위한 깊이 영상 압축 방법)

  • Recently, a need to encode a depth image has been raising with the deployment of 3D video services. The 3DV/FTV group in the MPEG has standardized the compression method of depth map image. Because conventional depth map coding methods are independently encoded without referencing the color image, coding performance of conventional algorithms is poor. In this letter, we proposed a novel method which rearranged modes of depth blocks according to modes of corresponding color blocks by using a correlation between color and depth images. In experimental results, the proposed method achieves bits reduction of 2.2% compared with coding method based on JSVM.

Generation of high quality stream for static picture quality test in DTV system (DTV시스템에서의 정적 화질 테스트를 위한 고화질 스트림의 생성)

  • In this paper we present a method to generate the bit stream of static video test patterns for testing the picture quality in DTV system. The proposed user-defined quantization table is suitable for the static video test pattern and for minimizing the deterioration of picture quality by quantization, the underflow or overflow of video buffer generated on the process of coding the static video test pattern is compensated by a adaptive zero stuffing algorithm so that optimal picture quality is implemented. Experimental result showed that the test pattern stream encoded by MPEG-2 software with the proposed algorithm had a stable bit rate and good video quality during the decoding process, which is about 3 dB higher than that of the conventional case.

  • UHDTV와 함께 HDTV 이후의 차세대 방송기술로서 전세계적으로 연구되고 있는 3DTV 방송 기술은 시청자에게 보다 사실적 이고 현장감 있는 3D 비디오 콘텐츠를 제공한다. 최근 미국 헐리우드를 중심으로 활성화되고 있는 3D 입체 영화 시장 성장, 다수의 디스플레이 업체들에 의한 3D 지원 디스플레이 발표, 휴대단말에서의 3D 데이터 및 비디오 서비스, 가정에서의 3D 비디오 서비스를 위한 3D@Home 표준화 작업, 3D4YOU를 중심으로 한 3D 비디오 콘텐츠의 생성기술과 배포 포맷에 관한 연구, 다시 점 3DTV 서비스 등을 위한 MPEG에서의 3DV 표준화 등 관련 기술 개발 및 표준화가 이뤄지고 있다. 본 고에서는 MPEG 3DV 그룹에서 진행중인 3DV부호화 기술 표준화 진행 현황과 기고 주요 기술에 대해 설명하고, 향후 3D 비디오 표준화 진행 전망에 대해 다루기로 한다.

  • 스테레오스코픽(stereoscopic) 3D 비디오 서비스는 기존 2D 와의 호환성을 유지하면서 새로운 3D 비디오 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 것으로, 전송 대역이 제한된 지상파 방송에서 높은 부호화 효율을 갖는 스테레오스코픽 비디오 코덱이 요구된다. 따라서 3D 를 위한 부가영상의 부호화를 위해 H.264/AVC 등을 고려하고 있으며, 또한 부가영상을 비실시간으로 전송하는 비실시간(Non-Real Time: NRT) 3D 서비스도 고려되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 NRT 3D 서비스를 위한 스테레오스코픽 비디오 부호화에 있어서, HEVC 에서 고려중인 적응루프필터(ALF: Adaptive Loop Filter)를 전/후처리 필터로 적용하는 기법을 제시한다. 특히, 부가영상의 후처리에 ALF 를 적용하기 위하여 부호화 과정에 결정되는 CU(Coding Unit) 구조를 이용하는 HEVC 와 달리 H.264/MVC 로 부호화한 부가영상의 매크로블록(MB) 부호화 모드를 이용한 ALF 적용 기법을 제안한다. 부가영상 부호화에 있어서 전처리 및 후처리 과정으로 ALF 를 적용함으로써 최대 약 20.5%의 부가영상의 부호화 성능 향상을 확인하였다.

View Synthesis Error Removal for Comfortable 3D Video Systems (편안한 3차원 비디오 시스템을 위한 영상 합성 오류 제거)

  • Recently, the smart applications, such as smart phone and smart TV, become a hot issue in IT consumer markets. In particular, the smart TV provides 3D video services, hence efficient coding methods for 3D video data are required. Three-dimensional (3D) video involves stereoscopic or multi-view images to provide depth experience through 3D display systems. Binocular cues are perceived by rendering proper viewpoint images obtained at slightly different view angles. Since the number of viewpoints of the multi-view video is limited, 3D display devices should generate arbitrary viewpoint images using available adjacent view images. In this paper, after we explain a view synthesis method briefly, we propose a new algorithm to compensate view synthesis errors around object boundaries. We describe a 3D warping technique exploiting the depth map for viewpoint shifting and a hole filling method using multi-view images. Then, we propose an algorithm to remove boundary noises that are generated due to mismatches of object edges in the color and depth images. The proposed method reduces annoying boundary noises near object edges by replacing erroneous textures with alternative textures from the other reference image. Using the proposed method, we can generate perceptually inproved images for 3D video systems.
