This study presents the minimum spring stiffness of resilient track pad considering the safety of running train. A nonlinear static 3-D finite element is used for the modeling of railway superstructure, especially for the reflection of nonlinear resistance of rail fastening system. Moreover, ballast is considered as an elastic foundation. As the input load, eccentric wheel and lateral force are used and they are derived from ' Lateral-force/Wheel-load Estimation Equations '. Analysis results are compared with following two values : allowable lateral displacement of rail head (derived from the geometrical derailment evaluation of wheel/rail) and operation standard value (derived from the field test results of track).

In this work a numerical method to simulate the response of reinforced concrete structures subject to cyclically imposed displacements is proposed. The method consists of a combination of a displacement and load controlled version of the Newton-Raphson iterative technique, used for the loading and the unloading part of the cycles respectively. The whole procedure is combined with a relatively simple concrete model whose only material parameter is its uniaxial compressive strength. The proposed methodology may realistically simulate, in an easy way, the physical process of any experimentally tested RC structure under imposed displacements cycles. The efficiency of the approach is demonstrated through a series of analyses of experimentally tested specimens reported in the literature.
In order to reduce the weight of automobile parts, automobile parts using aluminum alloy are being developed. Aluminum alloy for automobile parts is mainly made of Al6xxx (Al-Mg-Si) type alloy, which is excellent in hot forming property, and it can increase mechanical properties by the use of heat treatment. In this study, hot forming was performed using Al6082. Before the hot forming, the forming analysis was performed using the DEFORM-3D finite element analysis program in this case. For the forming analysis, the heat transfer coefficient was derived from the experiment, and the forming analysis was performed by applying it. At the forging analysis, the temperature of Al6082 material was set to 813K and that of the mold was set to room temperature. After the forging analysis, the experiment was performed, and the forging analysis and the experimental results were compared.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to propose finite element (FE) modeling methods for predicting stress distributions on teeth and mandible under chewing action. MATERIALS AND METHODS. For FE model generation, CT images of skull were translated into 3D FE models, and static analysis was performed considering linear material behaviors and nonlinear geometrical effect. To find out proper boundary and loading conditions, parametric studies were performed with various areas and directions of restraints and loading. The loading directions are prescribed to be same as direction of masseter muscle, which was referred from anatomy chart and CT image. From the analysis, strain and stress distributions of teeth and mandible were obtained and compared with experimental data for model validation. RESULTS. As a result of FE analysis, the optimized boundary condition was chosen such that 8 teeth were fixed in all directions and condyloid process was fixed in all directions except for forward and backward directions. Also, fixing a part of mandible in a lateral direction, where medial pterygoid muscle was attached, gave the more proper analytical results. Loading was prescribed in a same direction as masseter muscle. The tendency of strain distributions between the teeth predicted from the proposed model were compared with experimental results and showed good agreements. CONCLUSION. This study proposes cost efficient FE modeling method for predicting stress distributions on teeth and mandible under chewing action. The proposed modeling method is validated with experimental data and can further be used to evaluate structural safety of dental prosthesis.

The present paper briefly describes the space frame element and the fundamental strategies in computational elastic bifurcation theory of geometrically nonlinear, single load parameter conservative elastic spatial structures. A method for large deformation(rotation) analysis of space frame is based on an eulerian formulation, which takes into consideration the effects of large joint translations and rotations with finite deformation(rotation). The local member force-deformation relationships are based on the beam-column approach, and the change in member chord lengths caused by axial strain and flexural bowing are taken into account. and the derived geometric stiffness matrix is unsymmetric because of the fact that finite rotations are not commutative under addition. To detect the singular point such as bifurcation point, an iterative pin-pointing algorithm is proposed. And the path switching mode for bifurcation path is based on the non-negative eigen-value and it's corresponding eigen-vector. Some numerical examples for bifurcation analysis are carried out for a plane frame, plane circular arch and space dome structures are described.
The objective of this study is to formulate a general 3D material-structural analysis framework for the thermomechanical behavior of steel-concrete structures in a fire environment. The proposed analysis framework consists of three sequential modeling parts: fire dynamics simulation, heat transfer analysis, and a thermomechanical stress analysis of the structure. The first modeling part consists of applying the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) where coupled CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) with thermodynamics are combined to realistically model the fire progression within the steel-concrete structure. The goal is to generate the spatial-temporal (ST) solution variables (temperature, heat flux) on the surfaces of the structure. The FDS-ST solutions are generated in a discrete form. Continuous FDS-ST approximations are then developed to represent the temperature or heat-flux at any given time or point within the structure. An extensive numerical study is carried out to examine the best ST approximation functions that strike a balance between accuracy and simplicity. The second modeling part consists of a finite-element (FE) transient heat analysis of the structure using the continuous FDS-ST surface variables as prescribed thermal boundary conditions. The third modeling part is a thermomechanical FE structural analysis using both nonlinear material and geometry. The temperature history from the second modeling part is used at all nodal points. The ABAQUS (2003) FE code is used with external user subroutines for the second and third simulation parts in order to describe the specific heat temperature nonlinear dependency that drastically affects the transient thermal solution especially for concrete materials. User subroutines are also developed to apply the continuous FDS-ST surface nodal boundary conditions in the transient heat FE analysis. The proposed modeling framework is applied to predict the temperature and deflection of the well-documented third Cardington fire test.

In this paper, collision analysis of the full rake for the Next Generation High-speed EMU is conducted using a 3D/1D hybrid model, which combines 3-dimensional (3D) front-end structure of finite element model and 1-dimensional (1D) multi-body dynamics model in order to analyze train collision with a standard 3D deformable obstacle. The crush forces, passengers' accelerations and energy absorptions of a full rake train can be easily obtained through a simulation of a 1D dynamics model composed of nonlinear springs, dampers and masses. Also the obtained simulation results are very similar to those of a 3D model if an overriding behavior does not occur during collision. The standard obstacle in TSI regulation has been changed from a rigid body to a deformable body, and therefore 3D collision simulations should be conducted because their simulation results depends on the front-end structure of a train. According to the obstacle collision analysis of this study, the obstacle collides with the driver's upper structure after overriding over the front-end module. The 3D/1D hybrid model is effective to evaluate a main energy-absorbing module that is frequently changed during design process and reduce the need time of the modeling and analysis when compared to a 3D full car body.

In this study, aeroelastic response analyses have been conducted for a 3D wind turbine blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics(CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responsed of wind turbine blade. Vibration analyses of rotating wind-turbine blade have been conducted using the general nonlinear finite element program, SAMCEF (Ver.6.3). Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)equations with spalart-allmaras turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating turbine blade model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous Mach contour on the blade surfaces considering flow-separation effects are presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the rotating wind-turbine blade model.

When structural analysis modelling methods of practical fields are investigated, a slab is generally modeled by a finite element mesh using plate elements and a shear wall is modeled using a shell element or wall element for 3-D structural analysis. The point worthy of notice in this practice is that a shear wall is modelled using only one wall or shell element divided by floors and column lines to produce structural models. The modeling method like this can cause analysis errors according to the type of computer programs in use, and these errors reduce the reliability of the analysis results. Therefore, to secure the reliability of structural analysis, studies of the causes of errors and finding reasonable modeling methods are necessary. In this study, the causes of analysis errors according to the modelling methods of a shear wall, which are used in practical fields, were investigated and some considering matters for modelling a shear wall are presented to reduce the analysis errors on these analysis results.
In this paper, an adequate B-H curve extrapolation method is proposed and its reliability is verified through experiments. A method is developed to estimate the magnetic saturation induction from the density of the lamination core and electrical resistivity. The magnetic saturation induction of electrical steels measured using a vibration sample magnetometer are compared with the analytical results to validate the accuracy of the proposed estimation method. It is found that the predicted error in the magnetic saturation induction of the electrical steels are approximately 1.2% when the proposed method is used. The performance of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors that applies the proposed method are evaluated via 2D nonlinear finite element analysis and through experiments. Based on the obtained results, the extrapolated B-H curves from the estimated saturation induction can be used for various analyses in saturation region.
