  • This paper concerns the possibility of 3D printing reverse idle gears for tractor transmission. For the purposes of this experiment, idle gears were manufactured using a SLA 3D printer, FDM 3D printer, and through machining. The accuracy of the idle gears produced in these three different ways were evaluated by the properties of their outer diameter, inner diameter, roundness, concentricity, parallelism, span, backlash, and gear grade. The tooth characteristics of the idle gears were evaluated by their profile, lead, and the pitch of the gears. The results of this experiment determined that the surface conditions created by the finishing process had a significant impact on the dimensional accuracy of the gears and the characteristics of their teeth.

  • Recently, virtual reality technologies have been rapidly developed and realtime virtual simulation methods have been extensively employed for several application areas such as game, sports, manufacturing, military, and so on. A 3D database in realtime virtual simulation plays a key role because it makes users feel reality in virtual space. In a application view of 3D database, a systematic construction approach is required to reduce its construction time and increase its quality. However, many researches have been mostly focused on realtime graphic issues and its key technologies. In virtual simulation of transportation equipments, this paper proposes a systematic construction process of 3D database consisting of four stages as follows: 1) determine the activity space of a equipment, 2) collect data related to 3D database construction, 3) make a 3-dimensional modeling strategy, and 4) generate and evaluate a 3D model. This paper also introduces a new procedure of 3D environment modeling, which summarizes and expands our modeling experiences, to be used as a modeling guide.

  • Metal additive manufacturing (AM) technologies are classified into two groups according to the consolidation mechanisms and densification degrees of the as-built parts. Densified parts are obtained via a single-step process such as powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, and sheet lamination AM technologies. Conversely, green bodies are consolidated with the aid of binder phases in multi-step processes such as binder jetting and material extrusion AM. Green-body part shapes are sustained by binder phases, which are removed for the debinding process. Chemical and/or thermal debinding processes are usually devised to enhance debinding kinetics. The pathways to final densification of the green parts are sintering and/or molten metal infiltration. With respect to innovation types, the multi-step metal AM process allows conventional powder metallurgy manufacturing to be innovated continuously. Eliminating cost/time-consuming molds, enlarged 3D design freedom, and wide material selectivity create opportunities for the industrial adoption of multi-step AM technologies. In addition, knowledge of powders and powder metallurgy fuel advances of multi-step AM technologies. In the present study, multi-step AM technologies are briefly introduced from the viewpoint of the entire manufacturing lifecycle.

  • 3D geometric modeling has a lot of advantages in the field of design and manufacturing. Many manufacturing processes and production lines are using 3D geometric modeling technique. These help reduce the cost and time for manufacturing. The purpose of this study is the realization of a 3D cutting shape for an H-Beam used in ships and ocean plants. The complex 3D cutting shapes could be represented by using the boolean operation of basic figures. Graphic functions with parameters were used to simply define the basic figures. The developed system can show the complex cutting shape of an H-beam simply and quickly. This system can be utilized for the automatic cutting system for an H-beam.

  • Additive manufacturing technology is taking great attentions in these days because the term 3D-printing became a hot issue as the next generation manufacturing paradigm. Especially, laser additive manufacturing is at the center of interest thanks to the accuracy compared to other heat sources. In this report, recent papers about laser additive manufacturing are analyzed and reviewed. General technology is specified into three different categories and they are laser sintering, laser melting and laser metal deposition. Similarities and differences are clearly described by detailed technologies and used materials type. Representative application examples are selected then future of this technology is expected through those applications. Additionally, market of laser additive manufacturing systems itself and application fields are also predicted based on present 3D-printing market and technical progressions.

  • This paper presents a variant type process planning system for machining of dies for auto-body production. Through the analysis of dies and their manufacturing processes, the authors categorized the press dies into 15 groups according to the similarity of machining features. After critically reviewing current manufacturing procedures, a standard process plan was defined for each group. The authors present MP3D the process planning system built on the standard process plan database, and show how they apply it at the die manufacturing plant of an automobile company. MP3D is expected to reduce major losses in machining such as reworking caused by mistakenly uncut features and eventually to help to accumulate the knowledge of operators. The operation sheet MP3D produces is also used in monitoring the progress of manufacturing of dies. This paper explains the whole development cycle of a process planning system from process analysis to application so that it can help readers to develop and apply a process planning system to their machine shops.

  • Metal additive manufacturing (AM) has transformed conventional manufacturing processes by offering unprecedented opportunities for design innovation, reduced lead times, and cost-effective production. Aluminum alloy, a material used in metal 3D printing, is a representative lightweight structural material known for its high specific strength and corrosion resistance. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for 3D printed aluminum alloy components across industries, including aerospace, transportation, and consumer goods. To meet this demand, research on alloys and process conditions that satisfy the specific requirement of each industry is necessary. However, 3D printing processes exhibit different behaviors of alloy elements owing to rapid thermal dynamics, making it challenging to predict the microstructure and properties. In this study, we gathered published data on the relationship between alloy composition, processing conditions, and properties. Furthermore, we conducted a sensitivity analysis on the effects of the process variables on the density and hardness of aluminum alloys used in additive manufacturing.

  • This paper is to model a 3D-shape product applying mathematically the data acquired from a 3D scanner and using an Automatic Design Program. The research studied in the reverse engineering up to now has been developed continuously and surprisingly. However, forming 3D-shape solid models in CAE and CAM, based on the research, the study leaves much to be desired. Especially, analyses and studies reverse-designing automatically using measured data after manufacturing. Consequently, we are going to acquire geometric data using an 3D scanner in this study with which we will open a new field of reverse engineering by a program whic hcan design a 3D-shape solid model in a CAD-based program automatically.
