  • In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) image correlator by use of computational integral imaging reconstruction based on the modified convolution property of periodic functions (CPPF) for recognition of partially occluded objects. In the proposed correlator, elemental images of the reference and target objects are picked up by a lenslet array, and subsequently are transformed to a sub-image array which contains different perspectives according to the viewing direction. The modified version of the CPPF is applied to the sub-images. This enables us to produce the plane sub-image arrays without the magnification and superimposition processes used in the conventional methods. With the modified CPPF and the sub-image arrays, we reconstruct the reference and target plane sub-image arrays according to the reconstruction plane. 3D object recognition is performed through cross-correlations between the reference and the target plane sub-image arrays. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, some preliminary experiments on the target objects are carried out and the results are presented. Experimental results reveal that the use of plane sub-image arrays enables us to improve the correlation performance, compared to the conventional method using the computational integral imaging reconstruction algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a nonlinear 3D image correlator using computational reconstruction of 3D images based on integral imaging. In the proposed method, the elemental images for reference 3D object and target 3D object are recorded through the lens array. The recorded elemental images are reconstructed as reference plane image and target plane images using the computational integral imaging reconstruction algorithm and the nonolinear correlation between them is performed for object recognition. To show the usefulness of the proposed method, the preliminary experiments are carried out and the experimental results are presented compared with the conventional results.

  • In this paper, we propose a performance-enhanced object recognition by using nonlinear 3D correlator based on pixel restoration. In the proposed method, elemental images of the 3D target that are partially occluded by a foreground object are picked up and transformed into sub-images. By using the block-matching algorithm, the occluded target regions of each sub-image are estimated and removed. After that, the missing pixels in each sub-image are reestablished by using the pixel-restoration method. Finally, through the nonlinear cross-correlations between the reconstructed reference and the target plane images, the improved object recognition can be performed. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, some preliminary experiments are carried out and results are presented by comparing the conventional method.

  • In this paper, we propose an implementation method of 3D image correlator using integral imaging technique. In the proposed method, elemental images of the reference and signal 3D objects are recorded by lenslet arrays and then reference and signal output plane images with high resolution are optically reconstructed on the output plane by displaying these elemental images into a display panel. Through cross-correlations between the reconstructed reference and the single plane images, 3D object recognition is performed. The proposed method can provide a precise 3D object recognition by using the high-resolution output plane images compared with the previous methods and implement all-optical structure for real-time 3D object recognition system. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, optical experiments are carried out and the results are presented.

  • In this paper, a new input method is proposed to improve shift-invariant property of a photorefractive correlator andwe implemented real-time optical pattern recognition system using it. In the conventional photorefractive correlator, it is vrey difficult to satisfy the Bragg condition in the pattern recognition process. So, correlation peak is decreased heavily for the shift of input image. If a liquid crystal television(LCTV) without an anlyzer is used as input device, we can get the correlation result regardless of shift of input image because beam path is not changed during storage of holographic filter and correlation process. Also recording time of a holographic matched filter in photorefractive crystal is reduced and the correlation peak is increased because incident beam on the LCTV is transmitted completely. Therefore total optical efficiency is improved. We compared and analyzed the correlation results of proposed photorefractive correlator by computer simulation and optical experiment. We used a BaTiO$_{3}$ single crystal which has high diffraction efficiency in optical experiment.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new 3-dimensional(3-D) object-tracking algorithm that can control a stereo camera using a variable window mask supported by which uses ,B-D information and an optical BPEJTC. Hence, three-dimensional information characteristics of a stereo vision system, distance information from the stereo camera to the tracking object. can be easily acquired through the elements of a stereo vision system. and with this information, we can extract an area of the tracking object by varying window masks. This extractive area of the tracking object is used as the next updated reference image. furthermore, by carrying out an optical BPEJTC between a reference image and a stereo input image the coordinates of the tracking objects location can be acquired, and with this value a 3-D object tracking can be accomplished through manipulation of the convergence angie and a pan/tilt of a stereo camera. From the experimental results, the proposed algorithm was found to be able to the execute 3-D object tracking by extracting the area of the target object from an input image that is independent of the background noise in the stereo input image. Moreover a possible implementation of a 3-D tele-working or an adaptive 3-D object tracker, using the proposed algorithm is suggested.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel nonlinear 3D image correlator using a fast computational integral imaging reconstruction (CIIR) method. In order to implement the fast CIIR method, the magnification process was eliminated. In the proposed correlator, elemental images of the reference and target objects are picked up by lenslet arrays. Using these elemental images, reference and target plane images are reconstructed on the output plane by means of the proposed fast CIIR method. Then, through nonlinear cross-correlations between the reconstructed reference and the target plane images, the pattern recognition can be performed from the correlation outputs. Nonlinear correlation operation can improve the recognition of 3D objects. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, some preliminary experiments are carried out and the results are presented by comparing the conventional method.

  • In this paper, a new stereo 3D moving-target tracking system using the MSE (mean square error) and BPEJTC (binary phase extraction joint transform correlator) algorithms is proposed. A moving target is extracted from the sequential input stereo image by applying a region-based MSE algorithm following which, the location coordinates of a moving target in each frame are obtained through correlation between the extracted target image and the input stereo image by using the BPEJTC algorithm. Through several experiments performed with 20 frames of the stereo image pair with $640{\times}480$ pixels, we confirmed that the proposed system is capable of tracking a moving target at a relatively low error ratio of 1.29 % on average at real time.

  • In this paper, we presetn a new method to display 3-D image modelled as a sum of 2-D sliced images by expanding the concept of the conventional 2-D optical correlator based on spatial matched filtr to the 3-D region. It is hsown that a arbitrary image can be constructed by an array of the correlation-peaks between pixel-to-pixel and propose the systhesis precedure of 3-D spatial-matched-fjilter using fresnel diffraction equation to display 3-D image in space. It is also shown that the quantization problem is severe when the systehsised filter function is displayed on the conventional LC-SLM. To overcome this problem, anonlinear quantizaton method using the sigmoid function is suggested, and this method can reduce the bias and the loss of high spatial-frequency information, and improve the diffraction efficiency. Finally, the suggested method is tested by computer simulation and then approved by some optical experiments with the conventional LC-SLM.
