  • The degradation of the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete beams due to corrosion has a profoundly negative impact on the structural safety and integrity of a structure. The literature is limited with regard to models of bond characteristics that relate to the reinforcement corrosion percentage. In this study, uniaxial tensile tests were conducted on specimens with irregular corrosion of their reinforced concrete. The development of cracks in the corroded area was found to be dependent on the level of corrosion, and transverse cracks developed due to tensile loading. Based on this crack development, the average stress versus deformation in the rebar and concrete could be determined experimentally and numerically. The results, determined via finite element analysis, were calibrated using the experimental results. In addition, bond elements for reinforced concrete with corrosion are proposed in this paper along with a relationship between the shear stiffness and corrosion level of rebar.

  • There are many plain concrete arch bridges in Iran that have been used as railway bridges for more than seventy years. Owe to the fact that these bridges have not been designed seismically, and even may be loaded under high-speed trains, evaluation of fundamental frequencies of the bridges against earthquake and high-speed train vibrations is necessary for considering dynamics effects. To evaluate complex behavior of these bridges, results of field tests are useful. Since it is not possible to perform field tests for all arch bridges, these structures should be simulated correctly by computers for structural assessment. Several parameters are employed to describe the bridges, such as number of spans, length of spans, geometrical and material properties. In this study, results of field tests are used for modal analysis and adapted for 64 three dimensional finite element models with various physical parameters. Computer simulations show length of spans has important effect on fundamental frequencies of plain concrete arch bridge and modal deformations of bridges is in longitudinal and transverse directions. Also, these results demonstrate that fundamental frequencies of bridges decrease after increasing span length and number of spans. Plus, some relations based in the number of spans (n) and span length (l) are proposed for calculation of fundamental frequencies of plain concrete arch bridge.

  • In this paper, a comparative study of the effects of soil modelling on the interaction between tunnelling in soft soil and adjacent piled structure is presented. Several three-dimensional finite element analyses are performed to study the deformation of pile caps and piles as well as tunnel internal forces during the construction of an underground tunnel. The soil is modelled by two material models: the simple, yet approximate Mohr Coulomb (MC) yield criterion; and the complex, but reasonable hardening soil (HS) model with hyperbolic relation between stress and strain. For the former model, two different values of the soil stiffness modulus ($E_{50}$ or $E_{ur}$) as well as two profiles of stiffness variation with depth (constant and linearly increasing) were used in attempts to improve its prediction. As these four attempts did not succeed, a hybrid representation in which the hardening soil is used for soil located at the highly-strained zones while the Mohr Coulomb model is utilized elsewhere was investigated. This hybrid representation, which is a compromise between rigorous and simple solutions yielded results that compare well with those of the hardening soil model. The compared results include pile cap movements, pile deformation, and tunnel internal forces. Problem symmetry is utilized and, therefore, one symmetric half of the soil medium, the tunnel boring machine, the face pressure, the final tunnel lining, the pile caps, and the piles are modelled in several construction phases.

  • This paper describes the refined 3-D finite element (FE) modeling of composite frames composed of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns and steel-concrete composite beams based on the test to get a better understanding of the seismic behavior of the steel-concrete composite frames. A number of material nonlinearities and contact nonlinearities, as well as geometry nonlinearities, were taken into account. The elastoplastic behavior, as well as fracture and post-fracture behavior, of the FE models were in good agreement with those of the specimens. Besides, the beam and panel zone deformation of the analysis models fitted well with the corresponding deformation of the specimens. Parametric studies were conducted based on the refined finite elememt (FE) model. The analyzed parameters include slab width, slab thickness, shear connection degree and axial force ratio. The influences of these parameters, together with the presence of transverse beam, on the seismic behavior of the composite frame were studied. And some advices for the corresponding seismic design provisions of composite structures were proposed.

  • To investigate the influence of cross section geometries on the behavior of composite beams in the case of small span to depth ratio and deep beams. the static flexural behavior of composite I-beams and Box- beams was evaluated. 12 types of composite I -beams composed of LVL flanges and particleboard or plywood web and 3 types of composite Box-beams composed of LVL flanges and plywood web were tested under one-point loading. The load-deflection curves were almost linear to failure, therefore, the behavior of tested composite beams was elastic. The theoretical flexural rigidity of composite beams was calculated and compared with observed flexural rigidity. The highest value was found in I-W type beams and the lowest value was found in G-P type beams. The difference between theoretical and observed flexural rigidity was small. Theoretical total deflection of tested composite beams was calculated using flexural rigidity and compared with actual deflection. Shear deflection of these beams was evaluated by the approximation method, solid crosss section method and elementary method. The difference between actual deflection and expected deflection was not found in D, E and F type beams. This defference was small in G, H and I type beams or Box-beam.

  • The functions of diaphragms at abutments and piers of PSC box girder railway bridge are to transfer forces from the superstructure onto bearings or columns and to stiffen the superstructure cross-section against in -plane deformation. Due to stress disturbance at diaphragm, the design for the diaphragm using conventional design method is relatively irrational than those for other structural members. And, due to contribution to boundary condition of deck slab by the diaphragm, the behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm is different from that of the deck slab obtained from two dimensional analysis of the bridge, which is basis for the design of deck slab. In this paper, three dimensional behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder railway bridge constructed by the precast span method are analyzed by using three dimensional finite element modeling and using the strut-and-tie model design of the diaphragm are presented. The modeling techniques used in this paper can be applied effectively to examine the causes of cracks at deck slab near diaphragm and to design diaphragm rationally.

  • The Adsorption structures of phenylalanine on Ge(100) surface have been investigated as a function of coverage using high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES) and density functional (DFT) calculation. To converge these experimental and theoretical conclusion, we systematically performed HRCLPES measurements and DFT calculation for various coverage in the adsorption structures of phenylalanine molecules on the Ge(100) surface. In this study, we found two different adsorption structure as a function of coverage in phenylalanine on Ge(100), monitoring three core level spectra (Ge 3d, C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s) using HRPES Through analysis of the binding energies, we confirmed that O-H dissociated and N dative-bonded structure emerges at low coverage (0.10 ML), which is the same to the result of glycine and alanine on Ge(100) system, whereas O-H dissociation structure also appears at higher coverage. Moreover, we observed the shape of phenyl group being included in phenylalanine is changed from flat to tilting structure at final state using DFT calculation. Through the spectral analysis for phenylalanine, we will demonstrate variation of coverage dependent structural change for phenylalanine on Ge(100) surface using experimental (HRPES) and theoretical studies (DFT calculation).

  • Main bearing cap is one of the essential structural elements in internal combustion engine. Main bearing cap guides and holds the crankshaft, withstanding the full combustion and inertia loads of the engine. A seamless design methodology using FEA has been proposed to produce a reliable design of main bearing cap. A Levy's thick cylinder model was applied to calculate the contact pressure between bearing shell and housing bore. A calculated contact pressure at housing bore is within the allowed limit comparing with that from bearing shell model. An adequate FEA model was suggested to obtain reliable solutions for the durability of main bearing cap. 3D global model consists of engine bulkhead, main bearing cap, and bolts. Sub-model consisting of cap and part of bolts is used to get detailed solution of main bearing cap. A very careful contact modeling practice is needed to resolve the convergence problems frequently encountering during combined geometric and material non-linear problems. A proposed methodology has been applied to the main bearing cap model successfully and obtained reliable stress results and fatigue safety factors.
