  • Color correction between two or multiple images is very crucial for the development of subsequent algorithms and stereoscopic 3D camera system. Even though various color correction methods are proposed recently, there are few methods for measuring the performance of these methods. In addition, when two images have view variation by camera positions, previous methods for the performance measurement may not be appropriate. In this paper, we propose a method of measuring color difference between corresponding images for color correction. This method finds matching points that have the same colors between two scenes to consider the view variation by correspondence searches. Then, we calculate statistics from neighbor regions of these matching points to measure color difference. From this approach, we can consider misalignment of corresponding points contrary to conventional geometric transformation by a single homography. To handle the case that matching points cannot cover the whole regions, we calculate statistics of color difference from the whole image regions. Finally, the color difference is computed by the weighted summation between correspondence based and the whole region based approaches. This weight is determined by calculating the ratio of occupying regions by correspondence based color comparison.

  • Recently, 3D integral imaging system, which is well known as an auto-stereoscopic 3D display method, has been gaining great attention amongst researchers. The integral imaging is a promising 3D display technology since it is able to deliver continuous viewing points, full parallax, and full color view to the observers in space. In this paper, we propose a novel interactive 3D integral imaging system using a single camera. The user interface is implemented by adding a camera in the conventional integral imaging system. To show the possibility of the proposed system, we implement the optical setup and present the preliminary results. To our best knowledge, this is the first time to study an interactive 3D integral imaging.

  • Following the proliferation of three-dimensional video contents and displays, many terrestrial broadcasting companies prepare for starting stereoscopic 3DTV service. In terrestrial stereoscopic broadcast, it is a difficult task to code and transmit two video sequences while sustaining as high quality as 2DTV broadcast attains due to the limited bandwidth defined by the existing digital TV standards such as ATSC. Thus, a terrestrial 3DTV broadcasting system with heterogeneous video coding systems is considered for terrestrial 3DTV broadcast where the left image and right images are based on MPEG-2 and H.264/AVC, respectively, in order to achieve both high quality broadcasting service and compatibility for the existing 2DTV viewers. Without significant change in the current terrestrial broadcasting systems, we propose a joint rate control scheme for stereoscopic 3DTV service. The proposed joint rate control scheme applies to the MPEG-2 encoder a quadratic rate-quantization model which is adopted in the H.264/AVC. Then the controller is designed for the sum of two bit streams to meet the bandwidth requirement of broadcasting standards while the sum of image distortions is minimized by adjusting quantization parameter computed from the proposed optimization scheme. Besides, we also consider a condition on quality difference between the left and right images in the optimization. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed bit rate control scheme outperforms the rate control method where each video coding standard uses its own bit rate control algorithm in terms of minimizing the mean image distortion as well as the mean value and the variation of absolute image quality differences.

  • The ability to efficiently and robustly recover accurate 3D terrain models from sets of stereoscopic images is important to many civilian and military applications. A stereo matching has been an important tool for reconstructing three dimensional terrain. However, there exist many factors causing stereo matching error, such as occlusion, no feature or repetitive pattern in the correlation window, intensity variation, etc. Among them, occlusion can be only resolved by true multi-image stereo. In this paper, we present multi-image stereo method using DEM fusion as one of efficient and reliable true multi-image methods. Elevations generated by all pairs of images are combined by the fusion process which accepts an accurate elevation and rejects an outlier. We propose three fusion schemes: THD(Thresholding), BPS(Best Pair Selection) and MS(Median Selection). THD averages elevations after rejecting outliers by thresholding, while BPS selects the most reliable elevation. To determine the reliability of a elevation or detect the outlier, we employ the measure of self-consistency. The last scheme, MS, selects the median value of elevations. We test the effectiveness of the proposed methods with a quantitative analysis using simulated images. Experimental results indicate that all three fusion schemes showed much better improvement over the conventional binocular stereo in natural terrain of 29 Palms and urban site of Avenches.

  • Abstract. Image segmentation is always a challenging task in computer vision as well as in pattern recognition. Nowadays, this method has great importance in the field of stereo vision. The disparity information extracting from the binocular image pairs has essential relevance in the fields like Stereoscopic (3D) Imaging Systems, Virtual Reality and 3D Graphics. The term 'disparity' represents the horizontal shift between left camera image and right camera image. Till now, many methods are proposed to visualize or estimate the disparity. In this paper, we present a new technique to visualize the horizontal disparity between two stereo images based on image segmentation method. The process of comparing left camera image with right camera image is popularly known as 'Stereo-Matching'. This method is used in the field of stereo vision for many years and it has large contribution in generating depth and disparity maps. Correlation based stereo-matching are used most of the times to visualize the disparity. Although, for few stereo image pairs it is easy to estimate the horizontal disparity but in case of some other stereo images it becomes quite difficult to distinguish the disparity. Therefore, in order to visualize the horizontal disparity between any stereo image pairs in more robust way, a novel stereo-matching algorithm is proposed which is named as "Quadtree Segmentation of Pixels Disparity Estimation (QSPDE)".

  • In this paper, we constructed horizontal and vertical virtual spaces using the projection table and the projection wall. We then implemented a system that stereoscopically visualizes three-dimensional (3D) buildings in the virtual environments in accordance with the user's viewing point. The projection table, a kind of horizontal display equipment, is effectively used in reproducing operations on a table or desk as well as in areas that require bird-eye views because its viewing frustum allows to view things from above. On the other hand, the large projection wall, a kind of vertical display equipment, is effectively used in navigating virtual spaces because its viewing frustum allows to take a front view. In this paper, we provided quick interaction between the user and virtual objects by representing major objects as detail 3D models and a background as images. We also augmented the reality by properly integrating models and images with user's locations and viewpoint in different virtual environments.

  • The effort of implementing realistic 3-D depth on 2-D images has been continued persistently with a theoretical understanding of depth perception and its related technical development. The present article briefly reviews a number of popular stereoscopes for studying stereoscopic depth perception according to their implementation principles, and introduces a behavioral experiment as a technical example in which the active-shutter glasses were used. In the present study, participants were tested for their visual memory against perceived depth among a set of items. The depth of the memory and test items was manipulated to be 1) monocular, 2) binocular, or 3) both-monocular-and-binocular respectively. The memory performance was worst in the binocular-depth condition, and best however in the both-monocular-and-binocular condition. These results indicate that visual memory may benefit more from monocular depth than stereoscopic depth, and further suggest that the storage of depth information into visual memory would require both binocular and monocular information for its optimal memory performance.

  • The purpose of animation is to give interesting stories to an audience through motion. To achieve the purpose, over the past century since its inception, animation has adopted many kinds of technologies, and thus developed diverse narrative methods and visual expression techniques. In addition, with the advancement of expression techniques, all elements making up animation have gradually been systemized, and at the same time, have helped express the worlds beyond the reality. As a result, people have faced the era when an audience can watch everything imaginated by an animation director on a big screen. These days, more efforts have been made in order for the audience to feel much more than enjoy pictures moving in a frame. In other words, the purpose of the animation is changing from the passive viewing of animation to feeling and sensing stuffs through the animation. In the center of the changing process is 3D technology which gives new interesting to an audience. Sometime ago, a 3D animation movie was produced in Korea. But it did not bring out box-office profits, for it failed to give satisfaction to an audience who expected high perfection and beauty being able to be rivalled to those of international 3D animation movies. The failure is attributable to the fact that the domestic 3D animation production industry is merely in the early stage, and has not sufficient human resources, technology, and experiences in producing 3D animation films. Moreover, the problem is that most studies on 3D focus on the technologies related to reenactment, but that few studies on the images, which an audience directly faces, have been conducted. Under the domestic circumstance, the study on stereoscopic image screen of , a 3D stereoscopic animation film which was released in 2010 and has been seen as the best successful 3D stereoscopic animation, is worthwhile. Thus this thesis conducted theoretical consideration and case analysis focusing on the visual direction that creates the pictures to deliver abundant three dimensional effect so that it can be used as a basic data when producing high quality-domestic 3D animation and training professional labor forces. In the result, it was found that the 3D animation was not a new area, but the area which has been expanded and changed by applying the characteristics of 3D image based on the principles of the existing media aesthetics. This study might be helpful to establish the foundation of the theoretical studies necessary for producing 3D animation contents for realizing the sense of reality.
