The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge about the influence of running time of 3D stereoscopic video on audience perceptions. This study compares the influence of running time between 20 minutes and 40 minutes of 3D stereoscopic music shows on audience perceptions such as perceived characteristics, impression, presence, entertainment, fatigue and unnatural looking images. After experiment with 40 samples, the present research found that when people watched shorter 3D stereoscopic music video, they perceived more 3D functionality, such as depth, image conveyance and message conveyance. The results also suggest that people who watched shorter 3D stereoscopic video felt more impression such as definiteness and freshness from the 3D images. Moreover, the result confirm that when watching shorter 3D images, people felt more a sense of presence. Findings of this study have important practical implications how running time is important to 3DTV viewers. Since the nature of this study is exploratory, more research about segmented running time and genre, etc. of 3D stereoscopic videos will be needed.

This research entailed the production of stereoscopic 3D (S3D) contents using 2D-to-S3D conversion for exhibition at a museum and subjective evaluation. Hybrid production combining S3D images of existing live-action videos using the 2D-to-S3D conversion technology and computer graphic ones created via stereo rendering was conducted. Design and control of the chronological analysis of the parallactic angle was conducted on the produced contents, using binocular information as well as subjective evaluations, with the intent of conducting an investigation on the characteristics of such contents from the perspectives of the producers and viewers. An investigation was also conducted on the effects of the viewing position on the impressions of the S3D images.
In a spatially interlaced stereoscopic (SIS) three-dimensional (3D) display to be realized by providing the observer a part of left-eye/right-eye images, a loss of information can be perceived due to the un-shown part of each image. In order to resolve that problem, an improved SIS 3D display is proposed to deliver the images without loss of information to the observer using a time-multiplexing scheme. However, that time-multiplexing SIS also has a problem of luminance distortion when the desired luminance is not shown due to an insufficient response of the liquid crystal cell. In this paper, we propose a new method by optimizing the image data to show correct luminance with minimum distortion.

In this paper, we present the effect of binocular cues which plays crucial role for the visualization of a stereoscopic or 3D image. This study is useful in extracting depth and disparity information by image processing technique. A linear relation between the object distance and the image distance is presented to discuss the cause of cybersickness. In the experimental results, three dimensional view of the depth map between the 2D images is shown. A median filter is used to reduce the noises available in the disparity map image. After the median filter, two filter algorithms such as 'Gabor' filter and 'Canny' filter are tested for disparity visualization between two images. The 'Gabor' filter is to estimate the disparity by texture extraction and discrimination methods of the two images, and the 'Canny' filter is used to visualize the disparity by edge detection of the two color images obtained from stereoscopic cameras. The 'Canny' filter is better choice for estimating the disparity rather than the 'Gabor' filter because the 'Canny' filter is much more efficient than 'Gabor' filter in terms of detecting the edges. 'Canny' filter changes the color images directly into color edges without converting them into the grayscale. As a result, more clear edges of the stereo images as compared to the edge detection by 'Gabor' filter can be obtained. Since the main goal of the research is to estimate the horizontal disparity of all possible regions or edges of the images, thus the 'Canny' filter is proposed for decipherable visualization of the disparity.

Since the existing methods of segmenting target objects from various images mainly use 2-dimensional features, they have several constraints due to the shortage of 3-dimensional information. In this paper, we therefore propose a new method of accurately segmenting target objects from three dimensional stereoscopic images using 2D and 3D feature clustering. The suggested method first estimates depth features from stereo images by using a stereo matching technique, which represent the distance between a camera and an object from left and right images. It then eliminates background areas and detects foreground areas, namely, target objects by effectively clustering depth and color features. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we have applied our approach to various stereoscopic images and found that it can accurately detect target objects compared to other existing 2-dimensional methods.
Recently an extension to DMB-AF (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting Application Format) standard was proposed in [1] without sufficient validation for industrial application due to incomplete implementation. The extended DMB-AF can include stereoscopic video and stereoscopic images for interactive service data, i.e., MPEG-4 BIFS data, in addition to the existing 2D video and 2D images for BIFS services. The contents in the extended DMB-AF can provide a temporal mixture of 2D/3D video presentations possibly with or without 2D/3D images for BIFS services. In this paper we developed DMB-AF player software that can play the extended DMB-AF files and authored several test files for its verification. As a result, we introduced a new method for indicating dependencies of 3D media tracks to improve the extension in [1] and validated the extended DMB-AF with the improvement.
This paper presents a framework of real-time augmented reality on 3-D mobile display with stereo camera tracking. In the framework, camera poses are jointly estimated with the geometric relationship between stereoscopic images, which is based on model-based tracking. With the estimated camera poses, the virtual contents are correctly augmented on stereoscopic images through image rectification. For real-time performance, stereo camera tracking and image rectification are efficiently performed using multiple threads. Image rectification and color conversion are accelerated with a GPU processing. The proposed framework is tested and demonstrated on a commercial smartphone, which is equipped with a stereoscopic camera and a parallax barrier 3-D display.

In this paper, a new scheme for image conversion of the 2D input images into the stereoscopic 3D images by using differential shifting method is proposed. First, the relative depth information is estimated by disparity and occlusion information from the input stereo images and then, each of image objects are segmented by gray-level using the estimated information. Finally, through the differential shifting of the segmented objects according to the horizontal parallax, a stereoscopic 3D image having optimal stereopsis is reconstructed. From some experimental results, it is found that the horizontal disparity can be improved about 1.6dB in PSNR for the reconstructed stereo image using the proposed scheme through comparing to that of the given input image. In the experiment of using the commercial stereo viewer, the reconstructed stereoscopic 3D images, in which each of the segmented objects are horizontally shifted in the range of 4 ∼5 pixels are also found to have the mast improved stereopsis.
The development of image technologies in such area as broadcasting and movies has recently increased our attention to 3D stereoscopic images. In addition, the development of stereoscopic image representation technologies in 3D contents becomes more active over time due to the representational limitations of 2D images. Without limitation to the above-mentioned area, stereoscopic image technologies have been developed and studied so that they can be widely accessed in diverse areas including medical services and education. Due to the refined production, however, required to represent a three dimensional effects and the fatigue caused by the perception of a three dimensional effects, the stereoscopic image technologies are not combined into real time systems such as games where environments change unforeseeably. In this study we design a technique to adjust the depth scaling that will enable efficient management of a three dimensional effects and to relieve fatigue through automatic view point interval adjustment in accordance with situations based on the geometrical structure of the DirectX SDK graphic pipeline. Through this, we would like to suggest a new alternative idea to activate the production of games combined with stereoscopic image technologies.
We propose a real-time stereoscopic image conversion method that can generate stereoscopic image with different perspective depth using motion parallax from 2-D image and offer realistic 3-D effect regardless of the direction and velocity of the moving object in the 2-D image. The stereoscopic image is generated by computing the motion parallax between adjacent two 2-D images using the proposed method for motion detection, region segmentation and depth map generation. The proposed method is suitable for real-time stereoscopic conversion processing on various image formats. It has been verified the proposed method by comparing between the stereoscopic image of the proposed method and that of MTD.
