This paper is concerned with realistic mainpulation of content in video sequences. Manipulation of content in video sequences is one of the content-based functionalities for MPEG-4 Visual standard. We present an approach to synthesizing video sequences by using the intermediate outputs of three-dimensional (3D) motion and depth analysis. For concreteness, we focus on video showing 3D motion of an observer relative to a scene containing planar runways (or roads). We first present a simple runway (or road) model. Then, we describe a method of identifying the runway (or road) boundary in the image using the Point of Heading Direction (PHD) which is defined as the image of, the ray along which a camera moves. The 3D motion of the camera is obtained from one of the existing 3D analysis methods. Then, a video sequence containing a runway is manipulated by (i) coloring the scene part above a vanishing line, say blue, to show sky, (ii) filling in the occluded scene parts, and (iii) overlaying the identified runway edges and placing yellow disks in them, simulating lights. Experimental results for a real video sequence are presented.
Three-dimensional(3D) motion analysis is a useful tool for analyzing sports performance. During the last few decades, advances in motion analysis equipment have enabled us to perform more and more complicated biomechanical analyses. Nevertheless, considering the complexity of biomechanical models and the amount of data recorded from the motion analysis system, subsequent processing of these data is required for event-specific motion analysis. The purpose of this study was to develop a basic golf swing analysis algorithm using a state-of-the-art VICON motion analysis system. The algorithm was developed to facilitate golf swing analysis, with special emphasis on 3D motion analysis and high-speed motion capture, which are not easily available from typical video camera systems. Furthermore, the developed algorithm generates golf swing-specific kinematic and kinetic variables that can easily be used by golfers and coaches who do not have advanced biomechanical knowledge. We provide a basic algorithm to convert massive and complicated VICON data to common golf swing-related variables. Future development is necessary for more practical and efficient golf swing analysis.

In this paper, a planar car model with 3 degrees of freedom was analyzed using the concept of the roll center. To avoid ambiguity, force components which require experimental data were excluded. Only kinematic approach was used to find the position and orientation of the vehicle body and the position of the roll center. The roll center was found by the pole with infinitesimal movement and Kennedy-Aronhold theorem. Centrodes, which are the loci of instantaneous centers of planar motion, were constructed with analyzed results to show characteristics of vehicle body motion. To verify the presented analysis method in this paper, the locus of the roll center and the motion of a 3 D.O.F. planar car model were compared with those of the 1 D.O.F. model.

A simultaneous measurement system that can analyze the flow-structure interactions(FSI) has been constructed and analyses on the flow field and the motion field of a floating cylinder was made. The three-dimensional vector fields around the cylinder are measured by 3D-PTV technique while the motion of the cylinder forced by the flow field is measured simultaneously with a newly developed motion tracking algorithm(bidirectional tracking algorithm). The cylinder is pendant in the working fluid of a water channel and the surface of the working fluid is forced sinusoidal to make the cylinder bounced. The interaction between the flow fields and the cylinder motion is examined quantitatively.

Based on the Hartenberg-Denavit symbolic equation, which is one of equations for the kinematic analysis of three dimensional (3-D) linkage, a generalized kinematic motion equation is derived utilizing Euler angles and employing the coordinates transformation. The derived equation can feasibly be used for the motion analysis of any type of 3-D linkages as well as 2-D ones. In order to simulate the general motion of 3-D linkgages on digital computer, the generalized equation is programmed through the process of numerical analysis after converting the equation to the type of Newton-Raphson formula and denoting it in matrix form. The feasibility of theoretically derived equation is experimentally proved by comparing the results from the computer with those from experimental setup of three differrent but generally empolyed 3-D linkages.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of 3D-inertia measurement unit (IMU) based shoes in gait analysis. This was done with respect to the results of the optical motion capturing system and to collect reference gait data of healthy subjects with this device. Methods : The Smart Balance$^{(R)}$ system of 3D-IMU based shoes and Osprey$^{(R)}$ motion capturing cameras were used to collect motion data simultaneously. Forty four healthy subjects consisting of individuals in 20s (N=20), 40s (N=13), and 60s (N=11) participated in this study voluntarily. They performed natural walking on a treadmill for one minute at 4 different target speeds (3, 4, 5, 6 km/h), respectively. Results : Cadence (ICC=.998), step length (ICC=.970), stance phase (ICC=.845), and double-support phase (ICC=.684) from 3D-IMU based shoes were in agreement with results of optical motion system. Gait data of healthy subjects according to different treadmill speeds and ages were matched to previous literature showing increased cadence and reduced step length for elderly subjects. Conclusion : Conclusively, 3D-IMU based shoes in gait analysis were a satisfactory alternative option in measuring linear gait parameters.

This article presents an approach to estimate the general 3D motion of a polyhedral object using multiple, sensory data some of which may not provide sufficient information for the estimation of object motion. Motion can be estimated continuously from each sensor through the analysis of the instantaneous state of an object. We have introduced a method based on Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse theory to estimate the instantaneous state of an object. A linear feedback estimation algorithm is discussed to estimate the object 3D motion. Then, the motion estimated from each sensor is fused to provide more accurate and reliable information about the motion of an unknown object. The techniques of multisensor data fusion can be categorized into three methods: averaging, decision, and guiding. We present a fusion algorithm which combines averaging and decision.

This paper is aimed to introduce a method to estimate the general 3D motion of a planar object from the instantaneous states of an object using multi-sensor data fusion. The instantaneous states of an object is estimated using the linear feedback estimation algorithm. The motion estimated from each sensor is fused to provide more accurate and reliable information about the motion of an unknown planar object. We present a fusion algorithm which combines averaging and deciding. With the assumption that the motion is smooth, the approach can handle the data sequences from multiple sensors with different sampling times. Simulation results show proposed algorithm is advantageous in terms of accuracy, speed, and versatility.
Background: Although magnetic resonance imaging is accurate, it is expensive to measure the movement of temporomandibular joint. The three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis system is an inexpensive measurement tool. Objects: This study examined the reliability of quantifying the mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift and differences between individuals with and without temporomandibular disorder (TMD) using the hygienic method of surface markers on the skin with 3D ultrasound-based motion analysis. Methods: This study included 24 subjects (12 with and 12 without TMD). Temporomandibular joint motion during mouth opening was recorded using two surface markers with 3D ultrasound-based motion analysis. An intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC (3,k)] was used to confirm the intrarater reliability of quantifying kinematic temporomandibular joint motion, and an independent t-test was used to evaluate differences in maximal mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift between the two groups. Results: Assessment of mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift showed excellent test-retest reliability with low standard error of measurement. The lateral mandibular shift and opening-lateral mandibular shift ratio were significantly increased in the TMD group during maximum mouth opening (p<.05). However, no significant difference in maximal mouth opening was observed between the groups with and without TMD (p>.05). Conclusion: This hygienic and simple surface marker method can be used to quantify the mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift at the end-range of mouth opening. The TMD group showed an increased lateral mandibular shift movement at the end-range of mouth opening. The lateral mandibular shift movement can be regarded as a symptom in the diagnosis and treatment of TMD.
