This paper predicts the material properties of spatially reinforced composites (SRC) and analyzes the thermo-elastic behavior of a kick motor nozzle manufactured from that material. To find the appropriate SRC structure for the nozzle throat that satisfies given design conditions, the equivalent material properties of the SRC are predicted using the superposition method for those of rod and matrix. Studied are the elastic behavior, temperature distribution, and thermo-elastic behavior of a kick motor nozzle composed of carbon/carbon SRC as a throat part. The elastic deformation of the nozzle composed of 3D carbon/carbon SRC shows asymmetry in a circumferential direction. However, 4D carbon/carbon SRC nozzle shows uniform deformation in the circumferential direction. Stress concentration in connecting parts of the kick motor nozzle is ultimately high due to the high temperature gradient in each connecting part. The thermo-elastic deformations of both the 3D and the 4D SRC nozzles are uniform in the circumferential direction due to the isotropy of CTE of each SRC. The deformation of the 3D SRC nozzle is a slightly smaller than that of the 4D SRC nozzle in the nozzle throat, which is favorably effective on rocket thrust. The circumferential stress is the most critical component of the kick motor nozzle. The 4D SRC nozzle having 1,1,1,1.7 diameters in each direction has the smallest circumferential stress among several SRC nozzles.
In this paper, a new refined quasi-three-dimensional (3D) shear deformation theory for the bending analysis of functionally graded plate is presented. The number of unknown functions involved in this theory is only four against five or more in the case of the other shear and normal deformation theories. Due to its quasi-3D nature, the stretching effect is taken into account in the formulation of governing equations. In addition, the effect of different micromechanical models on the bending response of these plates is studied. Various micromechanical models are used to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of the FG plates whose properties vary continuously across the thickness according to a simple power law. The present theory accounts for both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a parabolic variation of displacements across the thickness, and the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. The problem is solved for a plate simply supported on its edges and the Navier solution is used. The results of the present method are compared with others from the literature where a good agreement has been found. A detailed parametric study is presented to show the effect of different micromechanical models on the flexural response of a simply supported FG plates.

,An residual stress and out-of plane deformation produced by butt welding was analyzed by four kinds of 3D-FEM programs(Thermal El-P1 Analysis) developed by authors. The magnitude of deformation of perpendicular to the welding line generated by butt welding was large when the reduced integration method was used. This was because of removal of the locking phenomenon, which it was generally known that the stiffness of the shear component of out-of-plane was largely evaluated. And the magnitude of residual stress was analyzed by using the FEM program based on a large and small deformation theory was similar to that was analyzed by the redeced integration method.

During supersonic flight of vehicles, the thermal behavior of structures under high-temperature environment is important for thermal-structural design. In this study, full-field thermal deformation and stress concentration of the notched structure was performed using global-local multi-digital image correlation (multi-DIC) systems. This techniques were developed and implemented by multi-DIC systems consists of 2D DIC system and 3D DIC system. The specimen was heated in a heating chamber to achieve the thermal expansion behavior. Then the images of structure's deformation and stress concentration at various temperature were recorded and analyzed by multi-DIC system. Afterward, full-field thermal deformation of the notched structure was determined with DIC technique and stress concentration at the notched structure was calculated by further processing. Finite element analysis of the notched structure is performed in ABAQUSTM and the results of the experiments show good agreement with those obtained from simulation. The results achieved in this study show the efficiency of the muilti-DIC method in thermal deformation as well as stress concentration of notched structure.

The use of I-Core sandwich panel has increased in cruise ship deck structure since it can provide similar bending strength with conventional stiffened plate while keeping lighter weight and lower web height. However, due to its thin plate thickness, i.e. about 4~6 mm at most, it is assembled by high power $CO_2$ laser welding to minimize the welding deformation. This research proposes a volumetric heat source model for T-joint of the I-Core sandwich panel and a method to use shell element model for a thermal elasto-plastic analysis to predict welding deformation. This paper, Part I, focuses on the heat source model. A circular cone type heat source model is newly suggested in heat transfer analysis to realize similar melting zone with that observed in experiment. An additional suggestion is made to consider negative defocus, which is commonly applied in T-joint laser welding since it can provide deeper penetration than zero defocus. The proposed heat source is also verified through 3D thermal elasto-plastic analysis to compare welding deformation with experimental results. A parametric study for different welding speeds, defocus values, and welding powers is performed to investigate the effect on the melting zone and welding deformation. In Part II, focuses on the proposed method to employ shell element model to predict welding deformation in thermal elasto-plastic analysis instead of solid element model.

Steel reinforced Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) components have been proposed for seismic structural applications, for example in coupling beams, infill panels, joints, columns, and flexural members. The development of strain in the steel reinforcement of cementitious components has been shown to vary based on both the steel reinforcement ratio and the applied deformation history. Strain in the steel reinforcement of reinforced ECC components is an important structural response metric because ultimate failure is often by fracture of the steel reinforcement. A recently proposed bond-slip model has been successfully calibrated to cyclically tested reinforced ECC beams wherein the deformation history contained monotonically increasing cycles. This paper reports simulations of two-dimensional finite element models of reinforced ECC beams to determine the appropriateness and significance of altering a phenomenological bond-slip model based on the applied deformation history. The numerical simulations with various values of post-peak bond-slip softening stiffness are compared to experimental results. Varying the post-peak bond-slip softening stiffness had little effect on the cracking patterns and hysteretic response of the reinforced ECC flexural models tested, which consisted of two different steel reinforcement ratios subjected to two different deformation histories. Varying the post-peak bond-slip softening stiffness did, however, affect the magnitude of strain and the length of reinforcing bar that strain-hardened. Overall, a numerical model with a constant bond-slip model represented well various responses in reinforced ECC beams with multiple steel reinforcement ratios subjected to different deformation histories.

The present article focuses on the thermoelastic deformation behavior of inhomogeneous functionally graded metal/ceramic cylindrical shell structure with multiple perforations using 2D finite element approximation. Here, cylindrical shell structure is considered with single (1×1) and multiple (2×2, 3×3 and 4×4) perforations. The temperature-dependent elastic and thermal properties of functionally graded material are evaluated using Voigt's micromechanical material scheme via power-law function. The kinematics of the proposed model is based on the equivalent single-layer first-order shear deformation mid-plane theory with five degrees-of-freedom. Here, 2D isoparametric finite element solutions are obtained using eight-node quadrilateral elements. The mesh refinement of present finite element model is performed to confirm the appropriate number of elements and nodes for the analysis purpose. Subsequently, a comparison test is conducted to demonstrate the accuracy of present results. In later section, numerous numerical illustrations are demonstrated at different set of conditions by varying structural, material and loading parameters and that confirms the significance of various parameters such as power-law index, aspect ratio, thickness ratio, curvature ratio, number of perforations and temperature on the deformation characteristics of functionally graded cylindrical shell structure.
When curing the composite, the fibers have little thermal deformation, but the resin changes its properties with time and temperature, which leads to residual stress in the product. Residual stress is caused by the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the fibers and resin during the curing process and the chemical shrinkage of the resin. This difference causes thermal deformation such as spring-in and warpage. Thermal deformation of composite structure is important issue on quality of product, and it should be considered in manufacturing process. In this study, a subroutine was developed to predict thermal deformation by applying 3-D viscoelastic model. The finite element analysis was verified by comparing the results of the plate analysis of the 2-D viscoelastic model. Spring-in of L-shaped structure was predicted and analyzed by applying the 3-D viscoelastic model.

A new approach for human foot modelling and last design based on the cross sectional method is presented in this paper. The proposed last design method utilizes the dynamic trimmed parametric patches for the foot 3D data and last 3D data. The cross section a surface of 3D foot for the 3D last, design modeling of free form geometric last shapes. The proposed last design scheme wraps the 3D last data surrounding the measured 3D foot data with the effect of deforming the last design rule The last design rule of the FFD is constructed on the FFD lattice based on foot-last shape analysis. In addition, the control points of FFD lattice are constructed with cross sectional data interpolation methods from the a finite set of 3D foot data. The deformed 3D last result obtained from the proposed FFD is saved as a 3D dxf foot data. The experimental results demonstrate that the last designed with the proposed scheme has good performance.

A novel 3D shape optimization algorithm is presented for electromagnetic devices carry-ing eddy current. The algorithm integrates the 3D finite element performance analysis and the steepest descent method with design sensitivity and mesh relocation method. For the design sensitivity formula, the adjoint variable vector is defined in complex form based on the 3D finite element method for eddy current problems. A new 3D mesh relocation method is also proposed using the deformation theory of the elastic body under stress to renew the mesh as the shape changes. The design sensitivity f3r the sur-face nodal points is also systematically converted into that for the design variables for the parameterized optimization application. The proposed algorithm is applied to the optimum design of the tank shield model of the transformer and the effectiveness is proved.
