Spread of household air conditioning system is continued to be increased. Axial fan in the external unit of air conditioning system is for ventilation and air supplying unit, and the related products have been widely adopted as household electronics, automobile engine, big sized blower in factory, tunnel, and subway. In this study, commercial 3-winged propeller fan is modified to shape and modified to 2-winged fan for the airflow increase and cost reduction. Using 3D modelling, the fan shape is modified, and analysis flow is adopted to provide the way to airflow increase and reduce cost while maintaining the same wind capacity.
A commercial CFD code is used to compute the 3-D viscous flow field within the inlet flow concentrator of the newly developed AHU(Air Handling Unit). To improve the performance of the AHU, the inlet air needs to be gradually accelerated to the fan's annular velocity without causing turbulence or flow separation. Three major geometric parameters were selected to specify the inlet shape of the AHU. Several numerical calculations are carried out to determine the influence of the geometric parameters on the performance of the AHU. The performance of the AHU could be measured by the inlet and outlet flow uniformity and the total pressure loss through the inlet flow concentrator. The optimized nondimensionalized velocity profile through the inlet flow concentrator were used for the design of the AHU with the various volume flow rates.

Turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics around staggered tube banks were studied using the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation governing a steady incompressible flow, which were reformulated in a non-orthogonal coordinate system with cartesian velocity components and discretized by the finite volume method with a non-staggered variable arrangement. The predicted turbulent kinetic energy using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was lower than that of standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model but showed same result for mean flow field quantities. The prediction of the skin friction coefficient using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model showed better trend with experimental data than standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model result. The inclined flow showed higher velocity and skin friction coefficient than transverse flow because of extra strain rate ($\frac{{\partial}w}{{\partial}y}$). Also, this was why the inclined flow showed higher local heat transfer coefficient than the transverse flow.

Due to the global warming and air pollution, interest in renewable energies has increased in recent years. In particular, the crisis of the depletion of fossil energy resources in the near future has accelerated the renewable energy technologies. Among the renewable energy resources, oceans covering almost three-fourths of earth's surface have an enormous amount of energy. For this reason, various approaches have been made to harness the tremendous energy potential. In order to achieve two purposes: to improve harbor water quality and to use wave energy, this study proposed a sea water exchange structure applying an Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave generation system that utilizes the air flow velocity induced by the vertical motion of water column in the air chamber as a driving force of turbine. In particular, the airflow velocity in the air chamber was estimated from the time variations of water surface profile computed by using 3D-NIT model based on the 3-dimensional irregular numerical wave tank. The relationship of the frequency spectrums between the computed airflow velocities and the incident waves was analyzed. This study also discussed the characteristics of frequency spectrums in the air chamber according to the presence of the structure, wave deformations by the structure, and the power of the water and air flows were also investigated. It is found that the phase difference exists in the time series data of water level fluctuations and air flow in the air chamber and the air flow power is superior to the fluid flow power.

The purpose of this study is to lay groundwork for a complete analysis of two component flow by analyzing a single component flow made of continuous fluid without dispersed phase. In order to achieve uniform velocity distributions which are desirable in designing an optimum spray column direct contact heat exchanger, the influence of injection nozzle orientation has been investigated for axial and radial injections. The results that radial injection ensures more uniform velocity distributions compared to the axial case. The flow characteristics in a spray column have been investigated with various L/D values and inlet velocities, the most uniform internal velocity distributions have been obtained for the case of L/D=10 and 0.1m/sec. In the present investigation, it is shown that radial injection method for the continuous flow is advantageous in obtaining desirable uniform velocity distributions in a spray column. It is also found that as the value of L/D increases and the inlet velocity decreases, the flow improves to be better uniform velocity distributions.
An experimental study was performed to investigate adiabatic wall temperature and heat transfer coefficient around on a module with longitudinal fin heat sink cooled by forced air flow. In the first method, inlet air flow(1-7m/s) and input power(3-5W) was varied after a heated module were placed on an adiabatic floor($320{\times}550{\times}1mm^{3}$). An adiabatic wall temperature was determinated to use liquid crystal film(LCF). In the second method to determinate heat transfer coefficient, inlet air flow(1-7m/s) and the heat flux of rubber heater($0.031-0.062\;W/cm^{2}$) was varied after an adiabatic module was placed on rubber heater covering up an adiabatic floor. In addition, surface oil-film visualization were performed to characterize the macroscopic flow-field around a module.

Air-water two phase natural circulation flow in the T-HERMES (Thermo-Hydraulic Evaluation of Reactor cooling Mechanism by External Self-induced flow)-1D experiment has been evaluated to verify and evaluate the experimental results by using the RELAP5/MOD3 computer code. The RELAP5 results have shown that an increase in the coolant inlet area leads to an increase in the water circulation mass flow rate. However, the water outlet area does not effective on the water circulation mass flow rate. As the coolant outlet moves to a lower position, the water circulation mass flow rate decreases. The water level is not effective on the water circulation mass flow rate. As the height increases in the air injection part, the void fraction increases. However, the void fraction in the upper part of the air injector maintains a constant value. An increase in the air injection mass flow rate leads to an increase in the local void fraction, but it is not effective on the local pressure.

Dual solutions for steady natural convection of air between two horizontal concentric cylinders are numerically investigated in the range of $D_i$/TEX>/L(=diameter of inner cylinder/gap width)$\leq$10. It is found that, when the Rayleigh number based on the gap width exceeds a certain critical value, a new flow pattern forming two counter-rotating eddies in the half of the annulus can be realized, which is different from the crescent-shaped flow commonly observed. In the new flow pattern, the fluid near the top of the hot inner cylinder moves downward. This solution is found for D$_{i}$/L.geq.0.3, but not for$D_i$/TEX>/L$\leq$0.2. As $D_i$/TEX>/L increase, the critical Rayleigh number is decreased, and tends to a finite limit.t.
The purpose of the present work is to develop a compressed air discharging system to eject a projectile from the underwater. For the flow analysis of compressed air tank, projectile ejection tube, and pipe system, the air is assumed as an ideal gas, undergoing 1-dimensional axisymmetric, compressible flow, the Fanno flow analysis was applied. The commercial Fluent code was used to solve 3-D Navier-Stokes equation of the internal flow within the valve. The dynamics of the projectile within the ejection tube was assumed 1-degree of freedom. The calculations were performed to four cases of valve opening area ratio, i.e., 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% opening area, at both depths of 10m and 50m. The results were shown as the figures of time variation of pressure of the compressed air tank and projectile ejection tube. The velocity and distance of the projectile were also predicted.

Fan noise prediction method is presented for air conditioning, automobile and electronic cooling system applications where fan acts as an internal equipment having very complicated flow interaction with other various system components. The internal flow paths and distribution in the fan-applied systems such as computer or air conditioner are analyzed by using the FNM(flow network modeling). Fan noise prediction method comprises two models for the discrete frequency noise due to rotating steady aerodynamic lift and blade interaction and for the broadband noise due to turbulent boundary layer and wake vortex shedding. Based on the fan operation point predicted from the FNM analysis results and fan design parameters, the present far noise model predicts overall sound pressure level and spectrum. The predictions for the flow distribution, the fan operation and the noise level in air cooling system by the present method are well agreed with 3-D CFD and actual noise test results.
